Before any testing or repairs are attempted, make sure the gear selector cable is adjusted. Use the following procedures to properly adjust the gear selector cable. 5R55S/W No or Delayed Engagement Figure 2: Make sure the cable mounting bolts behind the bellhousing are located in the original position and tight. Rotate the transmission control lever all the way forward. Figure 1: Disconnect the cable from the transmission arm at the TR switch. From the driver’s seat, select Man low and move selector 3 notches to the OD position. Hang a 3 pound weight from the selector lever. Figure 3: Move it back 3 detents to the OD position.

    Some Explorer and Mountaineer models may have slow or no engagement. Before any testing or repairs are attempted, make sure the gear selector cable is adjusted. Use the following procedures to properly adjust the gear selector cable.

    Figure 2: Make sure the cable mounting bolts behind the bellhousing are located in the original position and tight. Rotate the transmission control lever all the way forward.

    Figure 1: Disconnect the cable from the transmission arm at the TR switch. From the driver’s seat, select Man low and move selector 3 notches to the OD position. Hang a 3 pound weight from the selector lever.

    Figure 4: Connect the cable to the transmission control lever. Push the adjustment lock tab downward to secure the cable.

    Lower the vehicle. Remove the weight placed on the gear selector lever. Verify that the engine cranks in P and N and the backup lights operate in R. If not, adjust the TR switch.
