Sound of Music

“So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night

I hate to go and leave this pretty sight

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu

Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu”

I hope my last newsletter article finds everyone in good health. This has been quite a year for me, both personally and with the Lions. But as in the song of Sound of Music, it is time for me to go! Things did get accomplished this past year in the district. Probably not as much as we would have liked but we kept moving forward. You always have to keep moving forward. I am really hoping during the last few months we have all learned there are many ways to get things done. We must be open to new opportunities and try different things.

This coming year we may be having different events and conferences by webinars and meetings by different computer sites. We are learning that relationships are so important. We need each other to make it through difficult times! If we stick together then we will make it together!!

I have 8 clubs yet to visit. I will see what I can do in the month of June. If not, then I will come out in July. I leave you in good hands! DGE Gina will help everyone weather the storm. Please keep the motto “We Serve” alive. We are going to be needed more than ever in our communities!

Also, when working with each other, remember “Kindness Matters”!!

Dear Lions, Lioness, & Leos of 5M6,

First of all, I just want to recognize the great job that many of our clubs have been doing in these exceptionally difficult times. You have met them head on, figuring out ways to ‘meet’, finding safe ways to ‘serve’, and ‘care’ for your communities. It is not only impressive but also inspirational.

Obviously, we are still far from being out of the woods with regards to this pandemic. The economic burdens brought about by the stay at home orders have taken their tolls on our small businesses. People are out of work, students are trying to effectively distance learn, and everything that we considered normal and even mundane now seem like far off memories. There is so much fear and anxiety. Depression and even suicide is on the rise due to a lack of socialization and increased solitude. Our communities need our help more than ever.

As if these fears and anxieties weren’t enough, we have now been witness to one of the most unimaginable tragedies in recent memory followed by senseless destruction and violence pouring out into communities throughout the Twin Cities. Such loss and devastation – it has truly been overwhelming to comprehend.

As I have seen all of these events take place and listened to countless commentaries regarding the events, it has once again challenged me to think about the 2 feet that make up Loving Service – that of Charity and the other Justice. Charity – donating money, sending food after a disaster, visiting the sick, helping people survive a life crisis, etc. These acts are all extremely important and our communities could not get by without them in times of need, but they are, for the most part, providing a direct service with temporary results. For some people in our communities to stand up on both feet and walk on their own, they must receive assistance that is sustainable, an expansion of services that is involved with it’s beneficiaries and committed to long-term solutions. To create that kind of service has always been a dream of mine.

In the wake of all that has taken place in the last 3 months, it would be great to connect virtually as a Lions / Lioness / Leos community to share how these events have impacted our clubs, and to collectively discuss solutions on how we move forward – redefining service to include our members during this time of need, re-engaging with our communities by finding ways to safely serve, and finally, re-inventing the way we possibly meet and socialize to include the use of digital formats into the long-term. Please stay tuned for an announcement about this virtual event as well as upcoming training for newly elected officers. I have included the updated job aid for MyLion Service Reporting in this newsletter for starters. If some of you are like our club, we were having a bit of difficulty trying to figure out where we were going wrong with service reporting. We were using an outdated version of this procedure which explains a lot.

I would like to thank District Governor Tracy for her leadership through this last year. There have been some ups and downs and even some curve balls, but as she mentioned in her article, she proved that change is possible and that many can be open to the possibilities as well as the opportunities those changes bring forth.

We already know that we are up against some serious challenges as well as many unknowns heading into this next Lion’s year. I would be lying if I didn’t admit to you that I am just a “little bit” nervous about the fast approaching July 1st when I assume responsibility of District Governor. However, I know that with your support, involvement, and team spirit, we will overcome the obstacles before us, rise to the occasion, and come out of this even stronger in the end.

Fellow Lions, Lioness & Leos I hope this finds everyone in good health. I hope you have all been staying safe.

This is going to be an update on what has been happening at LCIF during the past couple of months. First LCIF has been working from home like a lot of others. The LCIF staff did conduct 4 LCIF webinars during the month of May. They were all very interesting and informative for the LCIF Coordinators. Because of the Stay at Home orders and vendors that LCIF uses, items that have been ordered may take a little longer to get.

As of May 11, 2020, the clubs and members of the District have made donations to LCIF totaling $65,449.18. However, there are still 5 clubs who have not made a donation. It would be appreciated if these 5 clubs would at least make a small donation to LCIF. If you want your donation to LCIF to count for the Lions year 2019-2020, LCIF asks that they be received no later than June 20, 2020.

As of May 18, 2020, LCIF has granted US$3,500,000 to provide immediate relief to communities severely impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19).

LCIF has announced that the timeline for Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service has been extended by one additional year, through June 30, 2022. This was voted on at the virtual meeting of the Board of Trustees on May 21, 2020. To date, Campaign 100 has raised US$151,804,119 to make Lion service possible. In these unprecedented times, your support of LCIF has never been more important.

If you are able, please consider joining LCIF in its support of Lions relief efforts by donating at lionsclubs.org/donate. Or if you would rather do your donation by check, please send to me for forwarding on to LCIF. All donations are eligible for MJF and Campaign 100 recognition. As we all know 100% of all donations go back into helping communities through grants.

As International President Choi recently wrote, we will get through this incredible challenge as we are in this together! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions on your Clubs current Melvin Jones Award balances or as a Lion or Lioness your personal donation totals. When we are back to being able to go to meetings, I would like to come to your Club for a presentation on LCIF. Lion Carol Farley LCIF Chair District 5M-6 651-426-9407 [email protected]

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted the work of Lions around the world. In many cases, it has also created financial hardships for our Lions and the people for whom we care.

To support the incredible men and women serving with us, the International Board of Directors has passed a resolution to help our clubs.

Here is an overview of the resolution approved by the Board of Directors:

■ Flexible payments – No clubs will be suspended or cancelled through December 31, 2020 for late payment of dues. ■ Charter and entrance fees waiver – We have waived all charter and entrance fees from July 1 – December 31, 2020.

These measures will help Lions facing financial hardships, and give our clubs hope, encouragement, and an opportunity to start the new Lion year with renewed energy and optimism.

This may be a time of great need, but we will overcome this together. For more than a century, Lions have taken on the greatest challenges facing humanity. That is who we are, and what we do.

So let us stand together. And let us remember just how important we are to our communities and the world.

Regards,

Dr. Jung-Yul Choi International President
