DESCRIPTION

Our purpose is to motivate and encourage kids to run and be active on a daily basis. We want to show our youth how getting in shape can be fun and exciting. This program is designed not to just show kids how to run, but to implement multiple exercises and drills along with running. Our drills are designed to imitate the movements that kids do while playing, for example jumping, squatting, and moving side to side.

FOUNDER BIO

Professional Athletes Against Childhood Obesity (PA2CO) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2011 by David Mims. Originally from Daingerfield, TX, David graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Finance. He went on to play in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers. He has been working with East Texas youth for the last 15 years. David is a personal trainer for high school athletes during the summer. He started the organization after noticing the increase in children who were inactive and dealing with health and weight issues. After researching childhood obesity, David wanted to use the fact that he was a former NFL player to help bring awareness to the epidemic. PA2CO was created to work with other ex and current NFL players to host 5K Runs, Fun Runs, and running programs in the schools to help eliminate this growing problem.

WHAT IS PA2CO

Professional Athletes Against Childhood Obesity is a group committed to eliminating obesity among America’s youth. The organization’s many initiatives emphasize the importance of proper nutrition, physical fitness, and additional factors that contribute to a healthy body weight.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to conquer Childhood Obesity one child at a time -- once and for all -- through organized

5K and 10K Runs, Health Fairs, and by promoting overall healthy eating habits for children of all ages.

RESEARCH SAYS

Research lets us know that over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

done. We want our kids to face a different and more optimistic future in terms of their

lifespan." - First Lady Michelle Obama

Pledge to Run and Be Active Program

PURPOSE Our purpose is to motivate and encourage kids to run and be active on a daily basis. We

want to show our youth how getting in shape can be fun and exciting. This program is

designed not to just show kids how to run, but to implement multiple exercises and drills

along with running. Our drills are designed to imitate the movements that kids do while

playing, for example jumping, squatting, and moving side to side.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS

Each School district will sign up to be a team member of the Pledge to Run and Be Active Program

Students, Teachers, and Staff Members are encouraged to participate

PA2CO will train the volunteers on how to administer the program safely and effectively to maximize results

Each student will be required to pay a $10 fee for the progam.

1-hour sessions 2 days a week and a 2-hour session on Saturdays

K-5th students start with drills and exercises first while 6th-12th students start with running

Kids can also get credit for miles during PE if monitored by PE Teacher

Program will last 8-10 weeks

At the end of the program, each student’s activity pledge form will be signed by the principal of the school, the monitor, and the student

Copies of the form will be sent home with the student to be given to each person or company who made a $1 per mile pledge on behalf of the student

All money collected from the pledges will go directly to the school

The Pledge to Run and Be Active Program and Fun Run formats will be available after the school signs up to be a part of the program

Special Note: Another way schools are using this program is by using it as part of their PE curriculum. According to the Texas Education Agency, schools must ensure that students exhibit a health-enhancing, physically-active lifestyle that improves health and provides opportunities for enjoyment and challenge. The students are expected to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activities on a daily basis that cause increased heart rate, breathing rate, and perspiration.

In the spring of 2013 the 5K for a Healthy Life will be held at designated location to celebrate

and honor every school, student, teacher, staff, and member who participated in the Pledge

to Run and Be Active Program. We thank you for your interest in partnering with us to help

fight the epidemic of childhood obesity.
