Brighton Speed Trials - 1905 to 1992It was in 1905 that this stretch of Brighton seafront was first used for trials of speed

for the new-fangled and much hated "horseless carriage". A four-day national festivalof motor races was the forerunner of what by 1932 became an annual one-day event inwhich many of the famous names in motor racing subsequently competed.

The 1905 events, although a great success for the town, gave rise to big problemsfor the Mayor and members of the Corporation. A body of ratepayers subsequentlyobtained a High Court ruling that the £3,050 spent in re-surfacing Madeira Drive priorto the Speed Trials was "wasteful, extravagant, and unnecessary, and therefore illegal"so the Mayor and the Corporation members had to foot the bill out of their own pockets.Fortunately for them, however, the Court of Appeal reversed the ruling and in 1907 theyall got their money back.

Not surprisingly the Corporation lost its enthusiasm for the Speed Trials after thatscare and they were not held again until the Brighton & Hove Motor Cycle and LightCar Club revived the event in 1923. They took place again in 1924 only to be suspendedonce more when a police ban prohibited motor racing on public roads for safety reasons. The present organisers, Brighton & Hove Motor Club, revived the event again in 1932when it was established that Madeira Drive was not a public road because it was ownedby the Corporation who could close it at will so it escaped the police ban. This time therevival of the Speed Trials proved more lasting as it is now 60 years since the 1932 eventand ever since then Brighton & Hove Motor Club have run the event annually, apart from1939 to 1945 and one other year when an accident necessitated a safety review.

Like last year's event today's is sponsored by Frosts Cars Limited and theorganisers, competitors, spectators and everyone else concerned can be grateful toFrosts for their continued participation and support. This event is the oldest competitionin the entire British motor sport calendar and we are all happy that it can continue underthe title, The Frosts Brighton National Speed Trials.

John BidwellVice-President B. & H.M.C.

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC RACINGThe Vintage and Historic class was notable last year for the entry of five famousGrand Prix cars. This year sports car are featured.Bob Burrell, long time exponent of large Bentleys, has his mighty V12 8 litresupercharged Bentley. He will use the power to good effect as the likely overallclass winner. Serious opposition will be provided by the Bentleys of BarrySummerfield, Chris Jonas and aviator Spencer Flack. David Roscoe in his fast4.3 litre Alvis may well surprise the Bentley boys.We also have a race within a race; the VSCC Handicap. The smallest car is theMG entered by well known racing driver and author Rivers Fletcher, who firstraced at Brighton in 1946. Tom Delaney has the supercharged Lea Francis heraced here in Brighton in 1934.Anthony Hansford has the long tailed BrooklandsSinger that Sir John Hodge deposited into somebody's front garden during theCounty Down road races in the same year. Any of these three drivers must havea good chance to take the trophy this year.

The Motor Cycles - Brighton 1992A few years ago I received a request for a paddock pass from an elderly French

gentleman, a Count no less, who wished to visit the speed trials in company witha French competitior. At the close of that year's event the old Count came over tothank me, saying. "M'sieur Phillipe. merci; the ambience of Britton (I) estfantastique" - this delivered in the best of Clouseau accents. Only a true Frenchmancould put what Brighton is all about so accurately.Over all the years that I have been involved with the trials we the Vintage Motor

Cycle Club sprint section have made every eHort to ensure, in spite of all the currentrules and regs. that are nowadays Imposed upon us, that the event as far as we areconcerned still retains that spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that has givenso much enjoyment to ourselves and we trust to you the spectators. Current ruleshave caused us to lose many of our old time entrants: the old bikes do not takekindly to having silencers stuck on to their exhaust pipes, relying as they do onreally wild camshaft timings to provide their performance.Notwithstanding, we still have a few of the oldsters, emasculated maybe but still

capable of running good times, but mainly to provide that sense of history so dearto us all, and more important to illustrate how far we have come forward nowadayswith the modern motorcycle that in pure road trim, lights and all, can run times thatonly a few scant years ago would have walked oH freely with the fastest time of theday. Take a note when Chris Illman comes to the start with his 1923 Zenith J.A.P.;a hand change three-speed gear machine, oH the mark fairly quickly, of necessityslow through its gear changes, but once it gets into its stride surprisingly fast fora sixty-nine years old bike of only 350c.c. Take a look at Alan Morgan's 1930Rudge500c.c.; very light, very slim as is the rider. Take a note of his times and comparethem with the times put up by, say Fred Grainger's mighty 11OOc.c.of KawasakiZZR.The Norton team are hoping to be with us today providing that Ron Haslam,

probably the best development racer in the business, is fit enough after his recentseries of personal repairs. If Ron is fit then it will be interesting to see if he can beatthe times set by last year's top award winner Trevor Nation on the works Norton. In company with the Norton team showing the flag will be an entry from the newTriumph organisation via Boyers of Bromley who have entered V.M.C.C. organiserPaul Standing on one of their new 1200c.c. Daytona models - Triumphs so long inthe field of sport over many years past and beloved of the Brit enthusiast. I surmisethat keen interest will be shown in comparison with the current crop of Japanesebehemoths; it's going to be an interesting day methinks.

Finally, on behalf of the Vintage Motor Cycles Club limited I would like to extendour thanks to the Brighton and Hove Motor Club for their kind invitation to the event,to all those folks who have worked so hard, not only on the day, but over the pastmonths. Especially the ladies who do so much in the background, preparing thenotes, compiling the times and all the other myriad requirements that provide us allwith such a jolly good day's sport.

Let us hope that the weather is kind to us; thank you, the spectator, for yoursupport, - enjoy the day.

Phil Manzano, 1992
