Verizon Faces 'Steep Climb' to Attain Attractive Return on 5G Home - Analyst Light Reading Molto critici sui costi FWS di Verizon su 5G anche rispetto a FTTH 5G-powered fixed wireless broadband is being billed as a potential disruptor to cable operators and other in-home wireline service providers, but a new analysis of Verizon's 5G Home rollout in Sacramento suggests that the company faces a "steep climb" to scale the offering and generate an acceptable return on the investment. "Our findings in Sacramento -- limited coverage, low penetration -- preliminary though they may be, suggest that earning an attractive return will be challenging, at best," Craig Moffett, analyst with MoffettNathanson, wrote in a lengthy analysis of Verizon's 5G Home rollout there. He allowed that these are "very early days" and that a new network doesn't "prove out in a matter of months," but likewise found the early findings eye-opening. Here's a breakdown of some key points from MoffettNathanson's study: • As of a public records request on Feb. 20, 2019, Verizon had deployed about 391 small cells

across Sacramento, of which at least 273 are being used for 5G, with the remainder appearing to be used for 4G service.

• Just 6% of residential addresses in the parts of Sacramento studied are currently deemed "eligible" for 5G Home. MoffettNathanson expects that number to rise, given that we're only about six months removed from Verizon's initial launch there.

• On average, each small cell tested -- based on a census of service eligible for the homes surrounding 107 of the 273 small cells in Sacramento -- services an area encompassing 27 eligible addresses.

• After six months on the market, Verizon has signed up less than 3% of the eligible single-family homes in the analysts' sample. As a percentage of homes in the test area, Verizon's market penetration is about one-tenth of 1% after this period. MoffettNathanson also noted that overall penetration is likely higher, as the study couldn't gauge multiple-dwelling units in Sacramento.

• Excluding the MDU-dense areas around downtown Sacramento, Verizon's 5G Home penetration is roughly one subscribed single-family home per 1.5 5G small cell.

For its self-described "proprietary deep dive" into Verizon's 5G Home rollout in Sacramento, MoffettNathanson sampled nearly 45,000 Sacramento addresses (out of about 70,000) within a 0.7 mile radius around 5G small cells located within seven zip codes.

"To us, the most interesting statistic isn't so much the low take rate as it is the relatively low coverage, as it illustrates the enormity of the challenge of scaling a small network, in neighborhood after neighborhood, across the United States," Moffett wrote. By way of comparison, a recent study by Earl Lum of EJL Wireless Research observed that about 10% of Sacramento had access to Verizon's 5G Home, and that the company's 5G transmitters were attached to streetlights. (See Analyst Maps Verizon 5G in Sacramento, Finds 'Pretty Sparse' Coverage.) Economics trump technology The core questions about 5G Home, MoffettNathanson argues, are not the technology or the physics of millimeter wave spectrum, but the broader economics and if Verizon stands to achieve a "passable return" on capital. And even if fixed wireless broadband is less expensive than FTTP to construct, the total cost per connected home could actually be more if the penetration rate for the new wireless service is not comparably high. The report notes that the cost of the drop for fixed wireless broadband (it could dip to about $200) is lower than it is for an FTTP network (about $700), but the "passing cost" is about the same. The difference maker, Moffett said, is the number of homes that are eligible for service and the ultimate take rate. The low penetration rate Verizon has seen thus far for 5G Home in Sacramento isn't nearly enough to achieve economics that are better than a typical FTTP network example, the report found. "Our analysis suggests that costs will likely be much higher (that is, cell radii appear smaller) and penetration rates lower than initially expected," the report explained. "If those patterns are indicative of what is to come in a broader rollout, it would mean a much higher cost per connected home, and therefore much lower returns on capital, than what might have been expected from Verizon's advance billing." The report also analyzed the effectiveness of Verizon's use of millimeter wave spectrum for 5G Home (Verizon is using 28GHz in Sacramento) and the useful radius of the small cells. While no single number can capture the propagation distance of a small cell due to multiple variables, MoffettNathanson says its admittedly oversimplified estimate is that each cell site serves an effective radius of about 700 feet. The study also points out that Verizon has said the company has seen distances of up to 1,900 feet, but likewise noted that the percentage of homes within that distance is the number that matters.

Page 4: 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie - Telecom Italia · 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie "To us, the most interesting statistic isn't so much the low take rate as it is the relatively low coverage,

MoffettNathanson's study is based only on an analysis of 5G Home in Sacramento. Verizon is also trying it out -- in different topologies and foliage levels -- in Houston, Indianapolis and Los Angeles, so it's possible that Verizon could be seeing better (or worse) results in those markets. The analysts conclude that it's of course possible that Verizon will be able to roll out 5G Home to about 25% of the country, or some 30 million homes -- as it guided to earlier -- with this architecture."But it will take a very, very long time. And it will cost a great deal of money," the report concludes. Tags: 5G, FWA

FCC moves to open spectrum above 95 GHz for new technologies FierceWireless 21 GHz di spettro liberati sopra il 95 GHz, potenzialmente 300-400 Gbps di banda

The FCC’s Spectrum Horizons First Report and Order creates a new category of experimental licenses for use of frequencies between 95 GHz and 3 THz. (Pixabay) The FCC unanimously voted to adopt new rules related to the spectrum above 95 GHz that encourage the development of new technologies—and may even lead to 6G. Once thought to be more or less useless—similar to how much of the industry used to think of the millimeter wave spectrum that’s now being deployed for 5G—these super-high spectrum bands are now viewed as offering opportunities for innovation, especially for data-intensive, high bandwidth applications as well as imaging and sensing operations. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai invited NYU Wireless Professor Ted Rappaport, who was instrumental in conducting ground-breaking millimeter wave research, to present his institution’s findings thus far on the opportunities afforded by the spectrum bands above 95 GHz, where “science fiction will become reality,” Rappaport told the commission.

named “Shasta,” which will comprise more than 200 cabinets and include Cray's SlingshotTM high-performance scalable interconnect and the Shasta software stack optimized for Intel architecture. “Achieving exascale is imperative, not only to better the scientific community but also to better the lives of everyday Americans,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry. “Aurora and the next generation of exascale supercomputers will apply HPC and AI technologies to areas such as cancer research, climate modeling and veterans’ health treatments. The innovative advancements that will be made with exascale will have an incredibly significant impact on our society.” “There is tremendous scientific benefit to our nation that comes from collaborations like this one with the Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratory, and industry partners Intel and Cray,” said Argonne National Laboratory Director Paul Kearns. “Argonne’s Aurora system is built for next-generation artificial intelligence and will accelerate scientific discovery by combining high-performance computing and artificial intelligence to address real world problems, such as improving extreme weather forecasting, accelerating medical treatments, mapping the human brain, developing new materials and further understanding the universe – and that is just the beginning.” Tags: HPC

Google mostra un sistema di gestione condiviso tra operatori delle frequenze 3.5 GHz in USA dal suo cloud Interessante che Google lavori su queste technologie con il suo cloud

The Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS) has given a passing grade to a Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) Environmental Sensing Capability (ESC) system developed by CommScope and Google. ITS, which is part of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), is the official test lab that has been tasked with confirming the performance of ESCs. CBRS provides 150 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band in the U.S. CBRS spectrum is managed by Spectrum Access Systems (SASs) but will require an ESC network to detect federal radar operations. The ESC will alert the SASs of federal radar activity, and SASs will then reconfigure nearby CBRS devices to operate without interfering with federal operations.

Page 13: 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie - Telecom Italia · 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie "To us, the most interesting statistic isn't so much the low take rate as it is the relatively low coverage,

“Our ESC sensor has passed all required testing for certification - demonstrating that we can detect all current and future radar waveforms and our respective SASs can protect incumbent users,” said Mat Varghese, Senior Product Manager, Wireless Services, Google. “This is an important milestone and we are looking ahead toward commercial operations in CBRS.” “We are pleased that our ESC sensor, as expected, has passed all testing from the lab and is on track for the next phase,” said Mike Guerin, vice president of Integrated Solutions, CommScope. “We look forward to initial commercial deployment and working with customers and federal agencies to ensure success.” The joint CommScope/Google ESC network is currently being deployed and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. CommScope and Google will each own and operate independent SAS systems which will provide service using the jointly operated ESC network.

CommScope and Google agreed to jointly develop, deploy and operate an Environmental Sensing Capability (ESC) network for the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) market. CBRS spectrum is managed by Spectrum Access Systems (SASs), which require an ESC network to sense radar operation. The ESC will alert the SASs of naval radar operations so the connected SAS systems can reconfigure spectrum allocations for nearby CBRS devices to operate without interfering with naval activity. The companies said they will each provide independent SAS services and jointly operate the ESC network. The ESC network is engineered for high availability with the built-in redundancy and fault detection necessary to provide this key enabling capability. As part of this collaboration, both companies share responsibility for overall network design.

Google announces browser-based streaming game service I giochi in streaming .. un sacco di banda e ci vuole poca latenza Alphabet Inc’s Google announced on Tuesday that it would launch this year a browser-based video game streaming service dubbed Stadia that attempts to capitalize on the company’s cloud technology and global network of data centers. The technology allows users to play games through their internet browser or YouTube without waiting for content to be downloaded to a device, making access to games potentially as easy as watching a video from YouTube. But Google offered scant details on timing, pricing or available titles for the service, which faces potentially tough competition from game publishers and from rivals including Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp. With Stadia, the “waiting game will be a thing of the past,” Phil Harrison, a Google vice president overseeing the new service, said during a keynote presentation on Tuesday in San Francisco at the Game Developers Conference, which is bringing together this week about 25,000 people who work in the video games industry.

Google declined to say how it would price its technology to consumers or game makers or specify supported games. It demonstrated titles from the Doom and Assassin’s Creed franchises on Tuesday and said that it would be developing some games in-house. The streaming technology offers a fresh way for Google to pitch game publishers on its cloud computing and data storage services, which ultimately could generate more revenue for Google than game sales. Google CEO Sundar Pichai speaks during a Google keynote address announcing a new video gaming streaming service named Stadia that attempts to capitalize on the company's cloud technology and global network of data centers, at the Gaming Developers Conference in San Francisco, California, U.S., March 19, 2019. REUTERS/Stephen Lam But analysts have questioned whether top game publishers will be prepared to shift from the lucrative business of selling games on discs. Game publishers also may decide to launch their own streaming services, as film and TV studios have begun doing for their content in the last few years. In addition, several technology companies are looking to boost services revenue through games streaming, including Nvidia Corp, Sony Corp and Microsoft. The latter two dominate the $100 billion global games market, excluding China. Shares of Alphabet on Tuesday rose 1.2 percent and Nvidia 4 percent. Sony fell 1.24 percent and Microsoft 0.07 percent. Google “has one key weakness – first party and exclusive content,” Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games for research firm IHS Markit, said in a note on Tuesday. “Both Microsoft and Tencent are better positioned with strengths in both infrastructure and content.” Google has shown mixed results in gaming. Video games are the best-selling category on its app store for Android mobile devices. It sold an estimated $21.5 billion worth of games last year, according to research firm Sensor Tower. And gaming is among the top three categories on the Google-owned video service YouTube. But Apple Inc’s App Store sold about $33 billion worth of games last year, and the games industry views Amazon.com’s Twitch, rather than YouTube, as the most popular video streaming service for content related to video games. Google flopped in efforts to popularize games on virtual reality headsets and televisions. Harrison said Stadia would launch in the United States, Canada and much of Europe and support desktops, laptops, TVs connected to Chromecast streaming media sticks, tablets and phones. Tags: gaming

Reliance Jio more than twice as fast as its nearest competitor in February Con 20 Mbps è èaragonabile all'Europa ed è oltre il doppio del primo rivale, l'incumbent Aircell,

The Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India has released its network speed report for the month of February Reliance Jio retained its crown as India's fastest mobile network, averaging download speeds of 20.9Mbps in the month of February, according to a report in the Economic Times of India. In second place, Bharti Airtel managed download speeds of 9.4Mbps. Vodafone was the next fastest network, with an average download speed of 6.7Mbps. However, this result was skewed slightly, as the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) still reports on the recently merged Vodafone and Idea Cellular's network performances separately. Idea Cellular's average speed of just 5.7Mbps during February would have dragged Vodafone's score down. When it came to upload speeds, the league table was reversed. Vodafone was the best performing network, averaging speeds of 6Mbps, followed by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. India remains one of the toughest markets for telcos to turn a profit in. Reliance Jio has recently called on the Indian government to do more to incentivise the rollout of mobile and fixed line next generation networks in the country. As things stand, Reliance Jio is set to launch 5G mobile services in India by the end of 2020. Reliance Jio has been at the heart of India's digital revolution, since it launched ultra-low-cost data tariffs and handsets available to its subscribers across its 4G networks on the sub-continent. What IoT Devices from the Trash Reveal about Their Former Owners In un device dismesso (p.es. il nostro AG o smart bulb ) ci sono tante cose su di noi, p.es. potrebbe esserci la nostra password wifi Smart, networked devices such as app-controlled surveillance cameras and light bulbs can be easily hacked. Especially with cheap IoT gadgets, the password is often fixed in the firmware and cannot be changed. Here follows a short anecdote about the sheer insanity of IoT uncertainty, followed by the top 10 vulnerabilities of IoT devices defined by OWASP.

What should you do with old IoT devices that bore you, that don't work anymore or that you don't use for any other reason? Throw them in the trash can, right? Wrong! A detailed investigation by Limited Results has shown that IoT devices can still reveal sensitive data even after being thrown away. The hobbyists put several smart light bulbs into operation and then dismantled them; they then removed the circuit boards and tried to read them out. The result: almost the same security gaps were found in all lamps. In all cases, the data was completely unencrypted, and even the WLAN password used by the user could be read. One of the devices is even said to have revealed a private key for RSA encryption. This relatively simple procedure means that at least the WLAN is open to hackers when they grab such a device from the trash can. But do you have to be an utter specialist to extract useful information out of the devices? Apparently not. The equipment tested was so poorly programmed and built that it is easy for reasonably experienced people to access sensitive information - even though this problem has been known for years and has been exploited countless times for attacks. OWASP, the Open Web Application Security Project, has compiled a list of 10 points for the past year that represent the greatest dangers in IoT networks based on IoT devices. This list is as follows: Weak Guessable, or Hardcoded Passwords Insecure Network Services Insecure Ecosystem Interfaces Lack of Secure Update Mechanism Use of Insecure or Outdated Components Insufficient Privacy Protection Insecure Data Transfer and Storage Lack of Device Management Insecure Default Settings Lack of Physical Hardening Tags: Cybersecurity

Microsoft shows off Project xCloud with Forza running on an Android phone Streaming games vs download ... potrebbe essere il futuro

Microsoft i has shared some more information and the first look at Project xCloud. The company has been working on a cloud game streaming service for a while. Microsoft is preparing the future of gaming platforms with a device-agnostic service that lets you stream games made for the Xbox One. And the first demo is Forza Horizon 4 running in a data center and then streamed to an Android phone attached to an Xbox One controller via Bluetooth. “Anywhere we have a good network connection, we’ll be able to participate in Project xCloud,” Microsoft head of gaming cloud Kareem Choudhry said in the video. While Forza Horizon 4 is a demanding game and an Android phone is a tiny device, it won’t be limited to extreme scenarios like that. Choudhry compared Project xCloud to a music streaming or video streaming service. When you have a Spotify account, you can log in from any device, such as your phone, your computer or your work laptop, and find the same music library and your personal music playlists. You can imagine an Xbox-branded service that you could access from any device. Even if your computer has an integrated Intel GPU, you could log in and play a demanding game from that computer. Everything would run in a data center near you. It’s easy to see how Project xCloud would work with Microsoft’s existing gaming services. The company promises the same games with no extra work for developers. You’ll access your cloud saves, your friends and everything you’re already familiar with if you’re using an Xbox or the Xbox app on your PC. If you’ve bought an Xbox, an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One, there will be more Xbox consoles in the future. “It’s not a replacement for consoles, we’re not getting out of the console business,” Choudhry said. Other companies have been working on cloud gaming. French startup Blade has been working on Shadow, the most promising service currently available. Shadow lets you access a Windows 10 instance running in a data center.
