    MUSAVIT MINISTRY TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES CHECKLIST

    Aims:

    To be developed into an Annex to be referenced by the MUSAVIT Ministry

    Constitution and Modus Operandi.

    To determine minimum technical skill sets required for the various music roles To identify areas and members for developmental training and enhancing of their

    skills

    Ability to play hymns

    Knowledge of music theory, numerical notation, chords, includingtransposition and harmonisation

    Ability to sing and play with accurate pitch and rhythm

    Sight-reading

    Improvisation

    Knowledge of and ability to play various types and styles of music

    Auto-accompaniment function of intelligent keyboards

    Ability to keep hymns going even when they make a mistake

    Ability to simplify over-complex music (both melody and accompaniment),

    Guitarists

    Basic knowledge (indicateor ) Know how to tune a guitar

    Know how to count beats in music (4/4, 3/4, 6/8) and keep time well.

    Playing chords for common guitar keys (G, C, D, A, E)

    Basic strumming patterns

    Know how to use a pick for strumming and plucking

    Know basic music theory (esp. important for chord tranposition)

    Know how to use a capo

    Know how to use Open chords for modern sounds (Esp. keys of G and E)

    Working with the band (indicateor ) Able to read tablature and chord charts

    Dynamics of playing (muted strums, plucking)

    Know how to transpose keys

    Know how to work with the keyboard to stay in a separate range

    Know if the song is piano- or guitar-driven and adjust accordingly

    Style of playing (Normal, Country, Rock)

    Bassists

    Basic knowledge (indicateor ) Know how to tune the guitar

    Know the functions of knobs on guitar

    Able to use right finger position for playing

    Know all the notes on bottom two strings at minimum

    Able to change or hit the note on the beat

    Know how to slide into and out of a note

    Know connecting notes by knowing scales

    Know notes that make up a chord (major and minor)

    Read chord chart and take note of slash chords for bass notes

    Playing with the band (indicateor )

    Lock in with kick drum

    Playing straight quarter or eighth notes in rock groove

    Know how play in different styles (e.g country, rock and ballad)

    Good communication with drummer to agree on pattern/dynamics

    Know how to transpose keys and chords

    Drummers

    Basic knowledge (indicateor )

    Know the names of the parts of the drum set (Kick, snare, hi-hat, toms,cymbals)

    Know how to hold drum sticks and hit the drum skin

    Able to count beats and measures (4/4, 3/4, 6/8) and preferably with ametronome

    Keep timing constant throughout the song, not speed up or slow down

    Play a basic 4/4 rock groove

    Know how to crash cymbal on beat 1

    Play basic fillers in time and also when to play them (transitions to chorusetc.)

    Working with the band (indicateor ) Know how to use ride cymbal as hi-hat for louder sections

    Dynamics with side sticks (soft) and rim shots (loud)

    Explore different grooves with kick and snare patterns for variety

    Know how to count in properly when needed for the song

    Know how to do 16th beats groove and fillers

    Know how to use toms to alter the sonic palette
