Last year we relaunched our Tool Bank service, providing tools for DIY as well as car, bike and garden maintenance including growing your own food. So far we’ve lent out over 100 tools and we’ve planned a series of DIY and gardening workshops in Burngreave.

We want to find ways to continue to provide the affordable tools that people need for their tasks. To do this we need as many S3, S4 and S5 residents as possible to fill in our questionnaire, helping us develop an affordable tool hire service for the area.

Fill in the questionnaire online at: http://tiny.cc/osfs3w or visit the Tool Bank before 10th March 2014.

To say thank you we will enter you in a free lucky draw with prizes. You could win a microsalad growing kit, solar powered security light, free tool hire or a £30 gift vouchers for a shop of your choice.

The Tool Bank at Abbeyfield House in Abbeyfield Park is open Thursdays 12-2pm and Saturdays 10am-12pm.

If you are struggling with money you are certainly not alone as 1 in 10 households in Britain are struggling with unmanageable personal debt.

From time to time all of us need a little bit of help and that is why City Church Sheffield have set up Jubilee Money Advice – a friendly team based in Shirecliffe Community Centre who offer FREE debt advice to anyone facing personal debt that they are struggling to repay. - you don’t have to deal with your money worries on your own.

We know it can be really difficult to ask for help, but don’t bury your head in the sand as debt problems don’t just go away, and they can become worse if left ‘untreated’. Why worry and struggle on your own when we could work together to solve the money problems you are facing?

Jubilee Money Advice helps people who are facing unmanageable debt to find a solution to their debts, dealing with repayments and creditors (they will bother us instead of you!). We can’t make your debt go away overnight but we can help to take the pressure off you and help you to see light at the end of the tunnel!

Jubilee Money also runs short courses on how to make the most of any money that you do have. The workshops will help you to think about the way you manage your money and guide you through developing your own plan to use it more effectively. If this is something that you might be interested in taking part in, give us a call to find out when our next workshop is.

To find out more about our Debt Advice Centre or our workshops check out our website: www.jubileemoney. org.uk, call us on 0800 587 5567 or 0114 232 0631 or email [email protected].

Health & Wellbeing Funded by Sheffield City Council as part of the Healthy Communities Programme

I am the new coordinator of community support services and specialist housing support and am based at SOAR Works Enterprise Centre. My new role is to work alongside SOAR Health and Wellbeing services as part of the early intervention process they have set up with local GPs in North Sheffield, to prevent people having to go to hospital and enable them to live well in their home.

I will act as a central point of contact for specialist housing support and will be the central hub of information for patients referred from Firth Park, Wincobank, Flowers and Shiregreen areas.

I will work one-to-one with patients to identify barriers to living well and overcome them using both SOAR and SYHA’s services. The LiveWell at Home project is all about working in partnership to innovate, learn and shape the future of integrated health, housing and social services around what works for people. The project includes signposting and working with a collaboration of health specialists such as Health Trainers, Advocates and advisors on a range of services.

I work for South Yorkshire Housing Association, they are the leading provider of housing, care and support in Sheffield and I will work really closely (in the same office!) with SOAR, the local community re-generation charity providing a range of services designed to improve a person’s health, well-being and employability.

The pilot will monitor and evidence the outcomes of the referrals and signposting, which aims improve individual independence and wellbeing, which in turn will improve health and reduce the need to visit the GP.

For more information please contact me by SMS (only): 07813 954 8996 or email: [email protected]

On the 18th December 2013 the UK Parliament held a debate on what it likes to call “food poverty”. The rise in individuals and families needing emergency food support from places like food banks has been massive, in the case of SHARE at Mount Tabor the increase over the past twelve months reflects this national increase:

2012 - WE ASSISTED 95 PEOPLE & SUPPLIED 353 DAYS OF FOOD

2013 - WE ASSISTED 694 PEOPLE & SUPPLIED 2025 DAYS OF FOODNick Waterfield works for PXI – Parson Cross Initiative, who organise SHARE at Mount Tabor, he says: “We’ve seen an increase in the aggressive use of sanctions by DWP, as well delays in benefit payments, all adding to the reasons why people are having to turn to us for help. Lets be clear people do not just turn up at food banks and get given food – they are sent to us by other agencies who have decided that they need help but who cannot offer that help themselves, sometimes this might be a social worker, a doctor or a midwife, or it might be an advice centre, or school – people come to us in need and we do our best to help.”

SHARE now has around 14 people who come regularly to help. The volunteers help with the giving out of food parcels, stock control, and general hospitality at Mount Tabor.

All the food is provided from donations by others, and we sometimes receive cash donations. In 2013 these donators included: Tabor Tots Playgroup, Southey Strutters Line Dancers , Hillsborough Trinity, Grenoside Methodists, Oughtibridge URC, St Marys at Ecclesfield, Wisewood Methodists, Action for Children (Palgrave Road), Sheffield

University & Sheffield Hallam University, and various families and individuals.

SHARE see their response as not being just about reacting to a crisis brought about by government policies, but also about building relationships, becoming better neighbours, and re-building community.

No one at SHARE sees food banks as a long term solution to the gaps left by reckless cuts to the idea of social security and a welfare safety net. Nick says “So we will continue for as long as we can to help those in need – but at the same time we will continue to question why it is in 21st Century Britain that people are increasingly forced to turn to charity to be fed.”

Sheffield Friday Night Ride Fri 14 March 2014 Foodbanks Start: Park Square, at bottom of South St. 6.30pm

Sheffield Friday Night ride organise regular Friday night social bike rides around the city and each one is based on a particular theme. This next ride hs been designed to acknowledge and increase the publicity that there are at least nine foodbanks in Sheffield that are offering succour and relief to people too poor to feed themselves.

The ride will visit each foodbank and as an act of charity each rider will carry nine items of food and donate one item at each location.

Riders can join in for all or some of the ride and we can collect riders as we go or some riders may like to ride sections of it. Rough timings will be posted online nearer the time. The total ride will involve nearly 20 miles of cycling.

If we get separated we’ll just re-group further up. No-one gets left behind, and no-one gets too far ahead. So come along and join us. Whoever you are, whatever your bike, you’re welcome to join the FridayNightRide.

Are you a creative young person aged 18-35, looking for hands-on training and experience in sculpture, media, set design, digital arts, installations?

Fancy learning this through helping revamp one of Sheffield’s leading underground nightclubs?New, innovative fundraising organisation, Party for the People along with Creative Arts Development Space (CADS) are working together to develop a new event space called The Night Kitchen.

They are looking to recruit young people to take part in an exciting new creative project, where they will learn a wide range of skills from set design to artistic event production, working closely with leading arts-based professionals.

The course will run as a series of one day workshops which will focus on an eclectic mix of art, media technologies and sculpture. The programme includes workshops that will involve set design, digital arts, artistic event production, installations, painting and mixed media.

Participants will also have the opportunity to work closely with a professional sculptor with the aim of building a large, exciting piece of work to be used and displayed at CADS for different events.

The course is free and a weekly attendance is preferable, but not essential.

Refreshments and materials will be provided and an exhibition and social event will be held at the end of the course to showcase the work produced. There will also be opportunity for paid travel expenses for participants on low income. Participants will also receive a project certificate in completion of the course outlining key skills achieved.

A Longley Park Sixth Form College student won 3rd place at the Cycle Speedway World Championships in Australia.

Representing Sheffield and Poland, Sandra Tamborska, came an impressive 3rd in the Individual Women’s Championships, racing against 15 other riders in the final. Sandra also placed 3rd in the Federation Cup and helped take her team to victory, winning 1st in the Junior Team category. Sponsored by Woskow Brown Solicitors and Sheffield-based manufacturer, Carbonomics, Sandra competed against riders from across the globe in Adelaide in November.

Art and Design student, Sandra said: “It was such a fantastic opportunity for me to be able to compete in the World Championships. It took a while to get used to the heat out there but we trained for 2 weeks before the races so we could acclimatise to it. Next year I am planning to compete in the European Championships taking place in Poland and the World Championships in the UK.”

Sandra got into the sport thanks to her Dad, who ran a Cycle Speedway club in Poland. The family moved to Sheffield in 2006 and soon got involved in the Sheffield Cycle Speedway Club.

Local Bike recycling organisation Recycle Bikes has opened up a new community workshop and training facility to let people repair and maintain their own bikes in a fully-equipped workshop.

The idea is to provide space for people to maintain their own bikes. Recycle Bikes At The Arches, as the workshop is known, is fully equipped with the latest tools to tackle most bike maintenance and repair jobs. Fully-qualified bike mechanics are on hand to offer advice, but the emphasis is on the bike

owner completing the repairs themselves. The workshop is open to anyone over the age of 18 and it costs just £4 an hour to book a workstand and tools.

Recycle Bikes At The Arches is also a training venue for bike maintenance courses. There are two types of course on offer: a basic maintenance class, which concentrates on “get you home” repairs and a complete maintenance course which shows you how to service all components on an average bike.

Community workshop gets people back on their bikes

Prices range from £5 for the four-session basic course which is subsidised by the Cycleboost scheme to £95 for the 6 session complete course.

We are located just off the Five Weirs Walk at 6 Princess Street, S4 7UU. The Bike Kitchen is open Tues and Thurs evenings from 4-8pm and Sat afternoons from 1.30-5.30pm. Maintenance classes run throughout the year:http://recyclebikes.eventbrite.co.uk/
