FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after thedraft finalized by the Wrought Steel Products Sectional Committee had been approved byMetallurgical Engineering Division Council. This standard was first published in 1962 and subsequently revised in 1982. While reviewing thestandard in the light of experiences gained during these years, the Committee decided to revise itto bring it in line with the present practices being followed by the Indian industry. In this revision, the following changes have been made:
a) Number of grades of steel plates for pressure vessels used at moderate and low temperaturehave been reduced to three by deleting Grade 4.
b) Chemical composition and mechanical properties have been modified.c) Requirements of heat treatment has been modified and provision of re-heat treatment has
been included for material which fails to meet the requirement of mechanical properties ininitial testing.
d) Dimensional tolerances have been modified. In the preparation of this standard, necessary assistance has been derived from the followingoverseas standards:
BS 1501 (Part 1) : 1980 ‘Steels for fired and unfired pressure vessel plates: Part 1 Carbon andcarbon manganese steels’, issued by the British Standards Institution (BSI).ASTM A 516-1984 ‘Specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel for moderate and lowertemperature services’, issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
This edition 3.1 incorporates Amendment No. 1 (October 1997). Side bar indicates modification ofthe text as the result of incorporation of the amendment. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised )’. The number ofsignificant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specifiedvalue in this standard.

11.4.1 Should any one of the test samples firstselected, fail to pass any of the tests specified inthis standard, two further samples shall beselected for testing in respect of each failure.Retest samples shall be drawn from the sameplate from which the original test had beendrawn. If the test pieces from either of thesesamples fail the material represented by thetest samples shall be rejected.11.5 Re-heat Treatment

12 NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTS
Ultrasonic testing of plates as perIS 11630 : 1986 may be carried out as permutual agreement at the time of ordering. Theacceptance standard shall be specified by thepurchaser.
13 RUST PROTECTION
After inspection and approval, if so desired bythe purchaser, each plate shall be painted withone coat of boiler linseed oil or a suitable rustpreventive material, as agreed to between thesupplier and the purchaser.
14 MARKING
14.1 For plates 6 mm and over in thickness, thename or trade mark of the manufacturer, castnumber, grade and plate number shall belegibly steel die stamped on each finished plateat 150 mm from one of the transverse edges atthe middle.14.2 For plates under 6 mm in thickness, themarking specified in 14.1 shall be legiblystenciled instead of stamping.
14.3 BIS Certification Marking
The material may also be marked with theStandard Mark.
14.3.1 The use of the Standard Mark isgoverned by the provisions of the Bureau ofIndian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules andRegulations made thereunder. The details ofconditions under which the licence for the useof the Standard Mark may be granted tomanufacturers or producers may be obtainedfrom the Bureau of Indian Standards.
