    CommunicateIT FSK Data Transmission NSK5

  • 2A programmable modem for power utility communication network.

For use in SCADA systemsNSK5 is a new fre quen cy shift keyed modem for the trans mis sion of data over voice-grade com mu ni ca tion facil ities. Already a suc cess in the mar ket place, the modem is designed for use in SCADA systems and allows both seri al asyn chro nous and syn chro nous data trans-mis sion. It uses binary fre quen cy mod ula tion tech niques which make it high ly immune to inter fer ence and noise and per mit exten sive voice-band com mu ni ca tion link util iza tion.

Advanced micro pro ces sor tech nol o gyThe modem employs advanced micro pro ces sor tech nol o gy, is fully pro gram mable, and has no fre quen cy-depen dent parts. Being micro pro -ces sor-based, it offers high ser vice flex ibil ity and sig nif i cant ly reduc es hard ware inven to ries. A reduc tion in the num ber of mod ules from

about 20 for the ear li er NSK4 series to just 2 for the NSK5 gen er a tion under scores this key ben e fit of the new design. NSK5 modems can be mount ed either in their own equip ment tier or, when used togeth er with ABBs new ETL power line car ri er set, plugg ed direct into reserved slots in this equip ment.

One module for all channelsA pro gram mable NSK5 modem con tains a com plete trans mit ter and receiv er, includ ing line equip ment and line trans form ers, a gal -van i cal ly iso lat ed power sup ply, and a type RS 232 C, D/V.24/V.28 data inter face. Also includ ed are a num ber of use ful extra func tions pre vi ously avail able only with spe cial add-on mod ules at extra cost.

A choice of syn chro nous or asyn chro nous data trans mis sionData can be trans mit ted either in asyn chro nous mode with speed and code trans pa r en cy and with out clock signals, or in syn chro nous mode with a clock sig nal pro vid ed at both the trans mit ting and receiv ing end of the modem.

Inte grat ed data regen er a tionAs an option, the modem can be made to regen er ate the data at the receiv ing end to elim i nate unac cept ably high pulse dis tor tion, which can occur occa sion al ly in a crit i caltrans mis sion path. This reduc es the users costs and sim pli fies pro ject engi neer ing; the inte- grat ed regen er a tor func tion is sim ply enabled when ev er it is required.

Amplitude equa liz er for long cablesAn ampli tude equa liz er to com pen sate for fre-quen cy-depen dent atten u a tion dis tor tion on long cables is a stan dard fea ture of the NSK5 modem. The user sim ply selects the most suit able equa liz er for his link using the pro gram switch es.

Inte grat ed line switch over unitA ver sion of the modem with inte grat ed line switch over facil ity is also avail able. With this option, trans mis sion is auto mat i cal ly con tin ued over the back u p line if the main path fails. This modem is for users desir ing an even high er trans mis sion avail abil ity.

Gal van i cal ly iso lat ed mod ule power sup plyA built-in volt age con vert er with 2 kVrms insu la tion level pre vents earth ( ground) loops between the modems in the sub rack and between the modems and the main power

sup ply. The modem can be fed direct from a 24 V bat tery or from other volt age sourc es with sep ar ate DC/DC or AC/DC con vert er mount ed in the equip ment tier.

NSK5 can be mount ed in a sub rack A sep ar ate equip ment tier, with the option of redun dant main power sup plies for all the com mon sup ply volt ag es, can accom mo date up to 9 modems. The sig nal cables can be con nect ed either to the front or to the rear of the modem.

or plugged into ETL power line car ri er equip mentThe modem can also be plugged into reserved slots in ABBs ETL power line car ri er unit. Up tofive modems may be insert ed, depend ing on the extent to which the ETL system is uti lized. Users choos ing this option do not need a sep ar ate NSK5 equip ment tier with its own power sup ply.

1200 bauds plus speech trans mis sion Using a stan dard ized chan nel with spe cial equaliz er, and with the modem plugged into the ETL equip ment, a data chan nel with 1200 bits/s can be oper at ed on top of the 300 to 2000 Hz band used for the speech chan nel.

Up to 2400 baudsSig nal ling rates of 2400 bits/s are pos sible with FSK, pro vid ing the total speech band width of 300 to 3400 Hz is avail able. The pro gram switch es are used to select stan dard speeds, as well as 2400 bauds for pilot wire or PLC trans -mis sions with spe cial equal iza tion.

Com pre hen sive test facil itiesData ter mi nal equip ment can request a local ana log test loop con form ing to ITU-T V.54 (loop 3) by means of the sig nal LL (for Local Loop). This involves a trans mit ted mes sage being looped back to the receiv er at a point imme di ate ly before the line trans form ers, result ing in local recep tion of a mes sage. There is also a switch on the front panel for initiat ing self-test ing of the modem.

  • Advantages of NSK5 Modem in short The frequency shift keyed NSK5 modem is designed for use in SCADA and offers you a set of advantages:

Fully programmable due to advanced microprocessor technology

Highly immune to interference and noise as a result of its binary frequency modulation techniques

Consists of a complete transmitter/receiver, including line equip ment, line transformers, a galvanically isolated power supply and different types of data interfaces

Serial asynchronous and synchronous data transmission over voice-grade communication facilities

Integrated data regeneration to eliminate unacceptably high pulse distortion

Amplitude equalizer for long cables to com-pensate for frequency-dependent attenuation distortion

Integrated line switchover unit to automatically continue transmission over the backup line if the main path fails

Can be plugged into ETL power line carrier equipment or mounted in separate equipment tier

Can operate at 1200 to 2400 bauds plus speech transmission
