Concept

Craftroots

Gramshree and Khamir present the first annual Craftroots fest on January 8, 9and 10th at the Karnavati Club to spotlight a wide range of talented artisans and exquisite craft traditions from across Gujarat.

(Please see www.craftroots.org for more info).

Aim

Craft is a vital and vibrant part of our daily lives, and yet, our purchasing

choices and market substitutes are slowly pushing these indigenous

techniques and knowledge into extinction.

Craftroots is a platform to create awareness (through videos, live demonstrations and a

photo/written exhibition) in the market about the skills, time and creativity artisans invest into

their craft and communicate how our purchasing choices directly impact the livelihoods of

thousands of artisans and the survival of generations-old traditions. In addition to displaying

innovative uses and designs of traditional craft, we will also be selling an assorted variety of

stunning handcrafted products.

About Organizers

GRAMSHREE

Gramshree’s mission is to enable women and artisans to be catalysts of

sustainable economic and social change in order to strengthen their

families and positively impact their communities. In addition to

encouraging the holistic development of slum and rural-dwelling

women, we also strengthen artisans by equipping them with proper

design inputs and marketing support in order to awaken their

entrepreneurial spirit. Additionally, by ensuring them fair wages as well

as educating customers about the processes behind various craft

traditions, we can help artisans thrive and simultaneously preserve and

promote India’s rich craft traditions.

KHAMIR

KHAMIR stands for Kachchh Heritage, Arts and Craft, Music and

Integrated Resources. For centuries, animal husbandry, rain-fed agriculture, and

craft have been Kachchh’s predominant livelihoods. Each is an integral part of

the local culture and landscape. In every Kachchhi home you will find a glimpse

of the region’s vibrant heritage, rich craft and music traditions, and unique

ecology as they are a source of local strength, identity, and pride. Appropriately, khamir means

“intrinsic pride” in Kachchhi, the region’s dialect. Khamir works to reposition craft and folk music in

Kachchh and to revitalize Kachchh’s creative industries.
