The new logosIn October 2002, the Corporation for Nationaland Community Service and its three majorprograms—Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, andLearn and Serve America—officially unveiledtheir new logos. The logos were designed to betterrepresent the agency’s mission and to reflect moreclearly the connections between its programs. From that date forward, all new printed, electronic, and other materials produced by theCorporation must use the new logos. In addition,Corporation grantees that choose to use aCorporation or program logo in connection withtheir program must use the new logo(s). We alsoask grantees to update any Corporation logos thatcurrently appear online in a timely manner, and tochange expired logos when reprinting materials orproducing new service gear.

We realize that the complete transition to thenew logos is an evolving process that will takesome time. Some of you may have recentlyordered service gear that features the old logos,or have recently printed brochures, stationery, banners, and other materials that incorporate theold logos. If that is the case, you may continue touse those items. Once they are depleted, however, we ask that you use the new logos in allof your materials.

Why new logos?Logos are visual symbols that help uscommunicate the meaning and purpose of our

programs to all our audiences—current andpotential volunteers and members, grantees, elected officials, corporate and foundationdonors, and the general public. In some cases, our logos are the public’s only connection withour programs.

The new logos were designed to:1) Better reflect the Corporation’s mission;2) Give a strong, consistent look to the Corporation

and its programs;3) Allow for customization by states and local

programs; and4) Connect national service to the notion of

patriotic duty.

We rely on you to help us communicate thedistinctive look, feel, and identity of theCorporation and its programs. By using ourlogos in accordance with the standards containedin this guide, you can help us convey a clear andconsistent message about who we are and whatwe do. This, in turn, can help you recruitmembers and volunteers, build partnerships, andraise awareness about the good work yourprograms do.

Who can use the new logos?Use of the new logos by the Corporation, itsprograms, and state offices is required. Inaddition, we strongly encourage all grantees andsub-grantees to use the logos on service gear andon printed or electronic documents such asstationery, application forms, recruitment

brochures, websites, banners, and press releases. However, because the new logos are servicemarks of the Corporation for National andCommunity Service, usage must be inaccordance with Corporation grant provisionsand the standards spelled out in this guide. Asalways, grantees must obtain the writtenpermission of the Corporation before using thelogos on items that will be sold, and beforepermitting donors to use the logos onpromotional material.

Finally, we realize that much of the languagecontained in this manual is technical. As a result,we strongly encourage you to share these graphicstandards with the graphic designer or printerwith whom you work.

How do I get the new logos? The Corporation provides logos for partners andgrantees. The new logos can be found online atwww.nationalservice.org/logos.

New Corporation logoThe new Corporation logo contains severalelements that reflect the new direction of theagency and its programs. Specifically, the new logo:

1) Places added visual emphasis on the words“National” and “Community Service.” This isconsistent with our desire to show how ourprograms, though national in scope, operate onthe community level. It also expresses our desireto reach out to more small, community-basedgroups, both faith-based and secular.

For many years, the official logo of theCorporation did not include the word“Community,” even though the statutory name

of the agency has always been the Corporationfor National and Community Service. In aneffort to better reflect the agency’s mission, goals, and direction, the Board of Directors andleadership of the Corporation have decided touse the full statutory name.

2) Reflects the imagery of the U.S. flag, demonstrating graphically the connectionbetween patriotism and service. We believe thatserving the country, whether through militaryservice, Corporation programs, or othervolunteer networks, is a patriotic duty and anobligation of citizenship.

3) Demonstrates visually that the Corporation ismade up of three programs—Senior Corps,AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Eachprogram is represented by a white star in a bluefield, which appears together with red and whitestripes. The three stripes represent citizenship, service, and responsibility. That imagery is carriedover to the individual program logos.

4) Demonstrates visually the connection of theCorporation and its programs to USA FreedomCorps. The Corporation and its programs are partof USA Freedom Corps, President Bush’s initiativeto foster a culture of citizenship, service, andresponsibility in America. The new Corporationlogo has the same basic horizontal shape as theUSA Freedom Corps logo, reflects similar symbolicimagery from the U.S. flag, and uses the same colorpalette. Those elements draw connections betweenthe programs and make them more visuallyappealing when they appear together.

New program logosThe new program logos are very similar indesign to the old ones. However, they differ in

3

Page 6: 579-A4 Graphic Standards32).pdf · 2014-04-09 · Graphic Standards:A User’s Guide brochures, websites, banners, and press releases. However, because the new logos are service marks

several important respects and were designedwith the following purposes in mind:

1) To demonstrate more clearly therelationships between and among theCorporation’s programs. Previously, each of themajor programs had its own distinctivebackground color for the star symbol. Now, theflag blue field is standard for all, and theaddition and inclusion of the red and whitestripes in all program logos signifies graphicallythe programs’ connections to one another. It alsofurther underscores the patriotic theme ofserving your country by participating in theCorporation’s programs.

2) To reduce the number of logos used so as toincrease the public’s understanding of ourprograms and the connections between them. Thelogos included in this manual are the only logosauthorized for use by our programs. That meansthat the uniquely designed AmeriCorps*NCCCand AmeriCorps*VISTA logos should no longer beused. Those programs should instead use thestandard AmeriCorps logo, with either “NCCC” or“VISTA” placed inside the outer black ring at thebottom. Further, the text-type logos developed byRSVP, Foster Grandparents, and SeniorCompanions are no longer to be used.

3) To allow for customization by states andlocal programs. The removal of the words“National Service” from the bottom of theprogram logos provides space to add the namesof states or national and local programs. Thisfeature allows for a graphical expression of theunique federal-state-local partnership that is theessence of national and community service. Formore information on customizing program logos, please see pages 11-14 of this guide.

4) To simplify the color scheme. The reduction in the number and variety of colorsused will ensure a more consistent look acrossall our materials.

★ Never run the logos sideways, upsidedown, or placed within a shape.

★ Use logos proportionally—don’t stretch or squeeze.

★ Do not alter the fonts or colors.

★ Obtain written permission from theCorporation before using the logos on materials that will be sold orpermitting donors to use the logos inpromotional materials.

★ Do not use the image of the star in a redfield (or in any other color field otherthan the specified blue) to represent theCorporation or any of its programs.

ElementsThe Corporation logo consists of two elements:1) the name of the Corporation; and2) three stars representing our three programsand three stripes representing citizenship, service, and responsibility.

The program logos consist of several elements:1) a black, serrated seal;2) two white outlines of circles;3) a white sunburst;4) a capital letter representing each program;5) the full name of the program; and6) a stylized American flag with one star, torepresent the program, and three stripesrepresenting citizenship, service, andresponsibility.

The proportion, spacing, and size relationshipshave been carefully developed and must remainintact. The logos should always be used asshown—never split, altered, redrawn, flipped, added to, animated, or recreated in any way.

The logos are service marks and trademarks.Creating variations of them is unacceptable fromboth a legal and an identity standpoint.

ColorsThe Corporation has standards for reproducingthe logos so they will always look consistent, nomatter where they appear. Most importantly, thelogos must always appear in either full color or inhalftones of black (grayscale). They should not bereproduced in solid white or in solid black. Theymay also not be reproduced in any other colorsbesides those designated by these standards.

The official colors of the Corporation logos areblack, red, white, and blue, with the words inblack and the flag in red, white, and blue. Inprinting, there are two ways to create thesecolors: with Pantone® spot colors or with four-color process.

Pantone® spot colorsThe blue in the flag is designated to print in acolor known as PMS 2728, and the red in the flagis designated to print in a color known as PMS032. (PMS stands for Pantone® MatchingSystem, a color standard used by designers andprinters.) To learn more about Pantone®, go towww.pantone.com.

Four-color process (CMYK build)CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow,Black. These are the four inks used to createmillions of colors on printing presses. If printedmaterials are being produced in “four-colorprocess printing,” color “builds” should be usedto make the official PMS blue and red.Commercial and government printers will knowhow to use these percentages.

Black and whiteThe logos may also be produced using halftonesof black, also known as “grayscale.” In this case, the blue field should always print as a 50 percentblack screen, and the red stripes should print as a30 percent black screen. The white stars andstripes should always remain white.

ContrastWhen working with the logos, keep in mind thatproper contrast will make the logos easier to read.

Corporation logo and contrastWhen used in full color, the Corporation logoshould be placed on white or moderately lightbackgrounds only. Avoid using the colorCorporation logo on a busy or patternedbackground or on top of a busy photograph.

When you are working with a dark background, you may use a white version of the Corporationlogo with a color or grayscale flag.

The stars and white stripe should always remainwhite no matter what style logo you use.

Program logos and contrastThe program logos may be used on anybackground. When the background is extremelydark or black, use the version of the logo—incolor or grayscale—that has a white outlinearound the seal. This is referred to as a“knockout” version. When the background islight, use the standard versions without thewhite outline. For more information on proper useof color in conjunction with the logos, please seepages 15-16 of this guide.

OrientationNever run the logos sideways, upside down, ordiagonally.

The only exception is that an individual programlogo may be used tilted 20 degrees clockwise orcounterclockwise. For more information on thecharacteristics and use of individual program logos, please see pages 9-14 of this guide.

Special effects and variationsWhen using any of the logos in pieces that willbe printed:• Don’t use shading or a “drop shadow” behind

the logos.• Don’t turn the logos into outlines.• Don’t place the logos in a shape (circle,

starburst, rectangle, or other form).• Don’t combine the logos with clip art.

For more information on pairing other logos or specialprogram or event information with the Corporation’slogos, please see pages 11-14 of this guide.

White spaceThe Corporation logos look best when they havesome breathing room (often called “white space”)around them. The proportional diagram at rightshows about how much room to leave.

As a general guide, white space around theCorporation logo should be about as wide or ashigh as half of the height of the entire logo. Forexample, if the logo is 1 inch high, there shouldbe ½ inch of space between logos.

There should always be white space around theprogram logos that is equal to the approximatewidth of the inner black circle.

SizeThe minimum height for the logos is ½ inch.Do not use the logos smaller than this, as thetype would be illegible.

ProportionWhether large or small, the logos’ height/widthratio should stay the same. The logos shouldnever be stretched or squeezed.

It will sometimes be necessary to use more thanone of the logos at the same time. For theseinstances, standards have been developed to keepthe usage consistent and recognizable.

When you need to identify all three of theCorporation’s programs, the order will always beas follows:1) Senior Corps2) AmeriCorps3) Learn and Serve America

The program logos, when used in this manner, should run in a horizontal row, based on thespacing standards set forth on page 8 of this guide.

When it is necessary to use the Corporation forNational and Community Service logo alongwith the program logos, the Corporation logoshould be placed either first in a horizontal rowwith the program logos or on top of the row ofprogram logos when possible. The Corporationlogo should always be at least the same height asthe program logos, but never smaller.

Customizing by stateA key feature of the new program logos is theability to customize logos by state, as shown atright. This will allow members and volunteers tofeel connected to their home states while alsobeing part of a national network. The Office ofPublic Affairs has designed state-specificprogram logos for all 50 states, Puerto Rico, theDistrict of Columbia, and the territories. Torequest a state-specific logo, email [email protected].

Customizing with yourprogram nameThe Corporation encourages the placement of anational or local program name within theoutside ring of the program logo. For the SeniorCorps logos and AmeriCorps logos, onlyprogram names that are under a total of 18characters, including spaces between words, canbe used inside the logo ring. For the Learn andServe America logo, the total number ofcharacters allowed is 17 or less. Additionalconditions depend on the type of program, asdescribed below.

Senior CorpsSenior Corps programs are encouraged to place theirlocal sponsor or project name under the programspecific logo (that is, under the RSVP, FosterGrandparents, or Senior Companions logo). Thefont should be in a size approximately the same asthe name of the program at the top of the logo. Theproper font to use is Helvetica Condensed Bold, at100% horizontal scale. Use standard upper andlower case letters, not all capitals.

In certain instances, Senior Corps programs maywant to include their sponsor or project name inside

USA Freedom Corpsand Corporation logosThe Corporation and its programs are part ofUSA Freedom Corps, a White House initiativeto encourage volunteerism and foster a culture ofcitizenship, service, and responsibility. As part ofthat effort, President Bush has asked allAmericans to devote at least 4,000 hours, theequivalent of at least two years of their lives, inservice to their communities and country. Theprograms of the Corporation are one way forAmericans to answer that call.

As a result, you may wish to use the USA FreedomCorps logo along with the appropriate Corporationprogram logo. If you are interested in displayingthe USA Freedom Corps logo on your website oron other materials such as T-shirts or letterhead, you must abide by the usage rules described atwww.usafreedomcorps.gov/link _to_us.asp. Pleasenote that the words “The President’s Call toService” are part of the official logo and shouldalways be used. When using the USA FreedomCorps logo in conjunction with the Corporationlogo or a particular program logo, the USAFreedom Corps logo should always be the sameheight or smaller than the Corporation logo, butnever bigger, and it should come at the end of ahorizontal row of logos when possible.

It will not always be possible to run the logos inthis horizontal fashion. In cases where the logosmust be vertical, please apply the rules of sizeand space so that each of the logos hasappropriate breathing room and a reasonable sizerelationship to its neighbors.

Color palettesThe Corporation and each of its programs hasan official palette of colors that are to be used onall general materials. The consistent use of thecolors helps lend a familiar tone to all printedmaterials. Colors are a part of the identity of theCorporation and its programs.

Colors in these palettes should be used in anyprinted pieces of the Corporation or itsprograms, especially on “core” materials —brochures, guides, website pages, stationery, and exhibits.

The palette colors serve as design accents, so ourprinted materials will be more colorful andvisually appealing than if only the blue and redfrom the logos were used.

Following are both the Pantone® spot colornumbers and the four-color build formulas foreach of the colors in the Corporation’s andprograms’ color palettes.

Important notes1) The four-color build formulas are not exactmatches for the Pantone® spot colors. They aresimply close approximations for achievable colorswhen printing with the four-color process. Youshould not expect the CMYK build versions ofthe palette colors to match the specifiedPantone® spot colors exactly.

2) The colors you are viewing on this page arealso not exact matches for the Pantone® spotcolors. The only way to see exact printedrepresentations of the palette colors is to use aprofessional Pantone® specifier.

3) Different budgets require different specifications, which is one reason people like the choice of usingeither Pantone® spot colors or four-color builds.Historically, spot colors have been less expensivethan the four-color process. With the recentadvances in digital printing, however, you may findthat smaller budgets allow for four-color printing. Please check with your vendor for comparativeestimates before you assume that you must printusing three or fewer Pantone® spot colors.

Service gearThe Corporation strongly encourages programsto provide T-shirts, hats, and other service gearfor members and volunteers to wear while theyare serving. The Corporation has produced awide variety of service gear for all nationalservice programs—Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America, as well as specialitems for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day ofService. These items can be purchased onlinethrough the national service catalog located atwww.nationalservicecatalog.org.

Mississippi Industries for the Blind (MIB) is theofficial supplier of service gear. MIB operatesthe national service catalog and fulfills orders forservice gear. MIB currently has in stock someservice gear with the old logos. Due to the largecost involved in producing this gear, MIB willcontinue to distribute gear with the old logosuntil supplies run out, at which time gear withnew logos will be provided. Given the similarityin look, it is acceptable for national serviceparticipants to wear the old or new logos whenserving together.

In addition to providing official service gear,MIB can custom design T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and other items. To special order gear, call601-984-3200 or e-mail Ada Jordan [email protected].

SizeOn T-shirts and other clothing, program logosshould never be printed smaller than 1 inch andnever larger than 9 inches. On hats, programlogos should be no smaller than 2 inches. Inevery case, you should attempt to make programlogos at least as big as any other logo with whichthey will appear.

ContrastThe same principles that apply to the use of thelogo in print apply to the logo as it might beapplied to gear. One important thing toremember is that if you are planning to apply thelogo to a dark item—such as a black hat—youmust be sure that, in addition to the standardred, blue, and black colors, you must also specifywhite as a printing color. The application ofwhite onto dark objects can be achieved throughscreen printing or embroidery.

Logo combinationsGrantees may wish to use their own logos inconjunction with program logos on gear. Usagemust be in accordance with Corporation grantprovisions and the standards outlined in thismanual. Grantees may not alter the logos andmust obtain written permission from theCorporation before using the logos on materialsthat will be sold and before permitting donors touse the logos on promotional material.

The preferred placement for any of the programslogos is as follows:

1) on the chest2) on the right sleeve3) on the back

LogosWe welcome the use of the Corporation logoand program logos on websites. Generally, thegraphic standards for the use of the logosoutlined in this guide also apply to websites, butthere are some special considerations.

SizeThe minimum height for the logos on the web is¾ inch, but we urge you to keep legibility inmind when considering your content as well asyour average viewer.

LinkingWe encourage you to link your website towww.nationalservice.org, www.seniorcorps.org,www.americorps.org, or www.learnandserve.org.You can use program logos or national serviceweb banners as link buttons. Go towww.nationalservice.org/linktous for more details.

Web colorsJust as there are guidelines for using theappropriate colors for each of the logos in print,

there are special guidelines for using color whenyou put the program logos on the web.

You should always place the program logos onwhite backgrounds. Knockout versions of thelogos are not available in the JPEG format, soplacing the logos on dark backgrounds on theweb is not an option. If you do this, you willend up with a white box around the logo. Thisis not acceptable.

Web bannersA web banner is an advertisement designedspecifically for websites. The Corporation hasdeveloped several banners promoting nationalservice that you can use for free on your website. When an individual clicks on the nationalservice banner, he or she will go directly to therelated website, such as www.seniorcorps.org. Toget national service banners, go towww.nationalservice.org/linktous.
