Dear Friends,I am thrilled to begin my fourth year and second term as Music Director and Conductor of the McLean Orchestra, coinciding with the celebration of our 45th Season. How time fl ies!

Great music can be an inspiring and powerful force in people’s lives, from the education of our Youth to those in all walks of life. Music speaks to us in ways that words cannot; it can unite and heal a community and bring people together. All of our concert programs are spectacular and we look forward to making wonderful music and sharing the joy with you.

Among our world-class soloists will be renowned President’s Own US Marine Chamber Orchestra’s violinist and TMO concertmaster Regino Madrid performing the Chausson Poème in our gala season opener, preceded by Ravel’s impressionistic suite of beloved fairy tales: Mother Goose. Mussorgsky’s grand masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition will provide an exuberant fi nish, culminating in Th e Great Gate of Kiev.

We’ll usher in the holidays with festivity, nostalgia and fun, joined by the fresh young voices of the Oakcrest School Chorus; a little something for everyone.

A Valentine’s program follows, featuring McLean Orchestra audience’s popular soprano Michelle Jennings of New York City making her third appearance with us. Surrounding her opera arias of romance will be the classic love stories of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde and Prokofi ev’s Romeo and Juliet; the perfect Valentine evening!

A very special Austrian program of Viennese delicacies by Schubert, Haydn and Beethoven features the towering EmperorPiano Concerto with prize-winning pianist Sara Daneshpour.

Th e pinnacle of our season? A program of American masterpieces centered on the ballet, to include the popular Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Barber’s Adagio and Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphosis.

Lastly, in celebration of our great community treasure, Th e McLean Orchestra, we want to meet YOU at our popular Cake and Champagne receptions in the lobby immediately following each performance. Spread the word!

I am very much looking forward to the rest of the 45th Season and to the remaining concerts from the McLean Orchestra and

It is a great honor to be coming on board as President and I am very grateful to Paul Frank for his guidance and council leading up to the changeover. I am grateful, too, to John Devlin for coming on board as Executive Director at a challenging time and for meeting it head on and for making such a tangible diff erence to the operation and

performance of the orchestra.

My goal is to work with John and Miriam and the Board of Trustees to ensure that our artistic excellence continues to grow whilst looking at opportunities to bring our music to a wider audience and within an operating budget that is both realistic and attainable. I am sure that we will have exciting choices to make and I look forward to sharing news with you over the coming months.

The Chausson Poeme has a special place in my musical life because it is a piece that has always been around me from the early stages of my musical training. From listening at a young age to recordings of

legendary violinists such as Heifetz, Oistrakh, and Milstein, to hearing my classmates in high school perform it, learning the piece and playing it at one of my recitals at CIM, and now performing it with the McLean Orchestra, the piece has evolved for me over time. Th e piece was written by the request of the famous Belgian violinist/composer Eugene Ysaye, who is known for his virtuosic and extremely diffi cult solo violin sonatas. Th is piece refl ects both the soaring lyrical beauty of the violin as well as its technical virtuosic capabilities. So I am very excited to be able to perform this with a full orchestra the way it was intended.        Th is is my twelfth season as concertmaster of the McLean Orchestra and I am very proud of this group of professional musicians. What makes this group special is their high level of enthusiasm for music-making and desire to give it their all when performing. Th at’s what makes playing with this group so much fun. I’m looking forward to a great season and hope the audiences continue to enjoy a true gem in the McLean community.

Regino MadridConcertmaster

from the Music Director

People often ask how I go about programming, and there are many angles one can take when putting a program together. Th ough not originally planned, a common thread of friendship is woven into the

fabric of tonight’s selections! Th e focus of this concert, around which the entire program is based, is the popular Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky.        As Music Director, I love to choose repertoire that highlights our star players, and with this in mind I chose the popular Pictures... to feature, in particular, our principal trumpet, Andrew Wilson. Mussorgsky was inspired to compose Pictures... after the untimely death of his friend, painter and architect, Victor Hartmann. Indeed, upon visiting a commemorative exhibition of Hartmann’s works, Mussorgsky was inspired to depict through music, his very walk through the gallery, admiring various works of art. Th e magnifi cent Great Gate of Kiev, realized musically from a mere architectural design, concludes this glorious work.        While Mussorgsky was a wonderful composer, he did not possess the skills of an orchestrator. Pictures... was originally composed for virtuoso piano solo. Several prominent composers strove to arrange the piece for full orchestra, but it was French composer and master orchestrator Maurice Ravel who crafted the most successful version decades after the premiere.        Given the genius of Ravel in bringing Mussorgsky’s Pictures to life, it then made perfect sense to bookend the program with one of Ravel’s original gems: his imaginative Mother Goose Suite. Th ese fi ve charming vignettes are from the full ballet, originally composed as piano pieces for the children of his dear friends, as a ploy to inspire them to practice for their piano lessons!        Th e inclusion of the beautiful and haunting Chausson Poème was a perfect French segue, featuring our dear friend and TMO concertmaster Regino Madrid; violinist extraordinaire.

Enjoy the camaraderie!

Enjoying a diverse career, Michelle Jennings sang the roles of Nella in

Gianni Schicchi, with Salt Marsh Opera in Connecticut, Johanna in Sweeney Todd with LOOK Th eater in Oklahoma, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte in New York City, and was soprano soloist for A German Requiem (Brahms) with Hudson Valley Philharmonic in Poughkeepsie, NY, last season. Michelle is also a fan of contemporary music and performed lead roles for many premiers of operas, including Th e Off shore Pirate and Ophelia by Joel Weiss, and Benedicta by Milton Granger. She can be heard on the recordings Christmas of Peace, and Christmas of Hope, which both benefi tted NYC children’s charities, and she recorded for the feature fi lm, Th e Afterlight, produced by North Lake Films. She has recorded for new musicals, Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl, and Peter Rabbit. A member of the comedic opera duo Divas Unleashed, she was Pamela Hamilton Ford in the New York City workshop of their original show Th e Benefi t, with subsequent performances around the United States, including McLean! A native of Richmond, VA, Michelle lives in New

York City with her husband, two kids, and of course, a chihuahua.

Concert Note: Michelle Jennings“Because we are merely hours away from Valentine’s Day, I wanted to off er some arias about love in this evening’s program. However, when I look at opera’s most beautifully written arias, it seems that they are virtually all about the diffi culties of love. After all, doesn’t even the best romance include some frustrating, challenging, sloppy moments? You will hear Mozart’s heroines spurning unwanted suitors as they anxiously wait to be reunited with their true loves. Fiordiligi does so with pride, and Constanza is fi lled with sadness in Cosi fan tutte and Th e Abduction of the Seraglio, respectively. Unlike the aforementioned characters, tonight’s Puccini heroines hope for love that is never realized. In La Rondine, Magda speaks of the true love that is unattainable for her as a kept woman: “Oh golden dream, to be able to love like this!” And in Madama Butterfl y, Cio-Cio San describes in great detail how the father of her child, an American naval offi cer, will return to her one day. “I will not race down the hill to meet him … he will come to me and call me by the name he gave me when we fi rst met.” Whether or not true love is found in these operas, the honest observations made about love is what I feel connects us with these multi-dimensional characters, so many years later.

I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to McLean for the third time and to sing with the wonderful Miriam Burns at the podium! Th e McLean Orchestra is a true treasure of Northern Virginia, and I am looking forward to some collective tugging of our heart strings!”

her native city of Washington DC, but also in New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Russia, Germany, Finland, Estonia, Denmark, and Sweden. She has been heard on stages of such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall in New York and at the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. She has also been featured nationwide on 160 public radio stations, including the venerable WGBH in Boston.

Her performances have earned high accolades of audiences and critics alike. Th e Washington Post wrote of her performance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra “...she created transfi xing poetry. And she found delightful details in passagework and incidents that other pianists treat as routine.” Th e Baltimore Sun stated that Sara “delivered a powerhouse account of Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No.1 producing enough tone for two pianists in the process”, while Th e Mercury News called her performance “...sensational. Strength, fi nesse, passion; it was all there.”

Concert Note: Sara Daneshpour“Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.5 symbolizes the human experience. From the all encompassing opening arpeggios of the fi rst movement, to the purity and fragility of the second, and concluding with the heroic vitality of the fi nal movement, one cannot help but be enraptured by the breadth of emotions. I am honored to perform this incredible piece with the McLean Orchestra this season.”

The program you will hear tonight is certainly a “Blockbuster, “ from the performers’ perspective, and hopefully, from the listeners’ perspective, as well! Each work is monumental in the orchestral

repertoire, and when presented together, the result is a feast for the ears!

Appalachian Spring, by Aaron Copland, has been very special to me for many years. It was the fi rst recording I listened to during my work-study job as a listening library worker in college! It was the fi rst album (vinyl!) in the upper left side of the shelves holding the recordings in the library. I thought I would eventually listen to all of the recordings in the library, but of course, I was not able to get through the thousands of hours of music. However, I kept coming back to Appalachian Spring, time and time again. It’s simple melodic material, dramatic development, and decidedly “American sound, “ has captivated me ever since. Perhaps the lyrical, heartfelt and hopeful spirit of the piece is even more important for us to hold onto during these trying times in the world today.

I am thrilled to be completing my 27th season with the McLean Orchestra, and I am proud of this incredible group of professional musicians. I have had the privilege to perform under the batons of Maestro Arnold Gabriel, Maestra Sylvia Alimena, various guest conductors, and now, under the outstanding artistry of Maestra Miriam Burns. Our orchestra continues to improve every year, and I believe that the best is yet to come! I hope the audience continues to grow and enjoys our special orchestra, a true shining light in the McLean community!

Philip Carpenter and I are proud to sponsor the performance of Appalachian Spring tonight. We hope you enjoy it and continue to attend our performances in the future.
