Lag B’omer is the day of demise of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, author of the famous Kabbalistic work, the Zohar. before his passing he asked that this day be celebrated with great rejoicing. It is also the day on which the students of the sage Rabbi Akiva stopped dying from a plague. Each year Jews all over the world gather on this day in parks for bonfires and picnics to promote Jewish unity and pride.
