• The aim of the course is – to give the student an overview of how migration is studied in the discipline of geography and other social sciences– to give a deeper understanding of a few selected themes within this wide research field. Case studies and examples 

will be integrated to highlight the current realities of migration. 

• Key themes/ideas: – Introduction to theoretical perspectives, concepts and methods in migration research– Current topics and debates in migration– The multidisciplinarity of migration research– Topics covered: trafficking, conflict-induced forced migration, quota refugees in Finland, ethnicity, transnationalism 

and migrant diasporas, highly-skilled migration, migration and climate change, immigration and urban segregation

• Working methods: participatory and research-oriented– Lectures, reading academic texts (or other material) before lecture, a written assignment (5-10 p.)– Participatory methods: group-work and discussions, debates, presentations – Mandatory participation in lectures and guest lectures, active participation in course-work

• Registration in WebOodi 1.12.2012 – 10.1.2013

• Course is aimed at students at masters’ level majoring in geography and regional studies
