FEBRUARY 18, 2018 - FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

DAILY LITURGY for the Week of February 18, 2018

Today launches the Diocese of Trenton’s Annual Catholic Appeal.

Why is the Annual Catholic Appeal important? As members of our diocesan family, we are called upon to love and serve all of our brothers and sisters – both within our Catholic community and beyond. Your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal allows our diocese to continue to serve as a resource to the parishes and other organizations in their efforts to provide service, evangelization and outreach to people throughout Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Annual Catholic Appeal

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

IN ACTION! Evangelization Each parish is unique and offers religious education in ways that meet the needs of over 40,000 students in the local community. Some program structures are very traditional; others are innovative. Over 600 adults in various stages of formation were brought to full initiation with the Church in our diocese last year. Many opportunities for the enrichment of faith are found in events and activities in parishes throughout the diocese, such as Bible Study, parish missions, lecture series, and online learning. These ministries help with adult faith enrichment by providing support for parish leaders and access to resources. Your gift, in essence, builds up our Catholic faith. Together in Mission is a tool within our Diocese that has been created to help pastors, parish clergy and staff, parish ministry leaders and families become more inten-tional about evangelizing at every phase of life. Your gift supports this innovative tool which impacts the real lives of Catholics growing in faith.

FEBRUARY 18, 2018 - FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

ANNOUNCEMENTS, continued

TODAY Our parish commu-nity will celebrate the Rite of Sending at the 11 AM Mass on the First Sunday of Lent (February 18, 2018). This ritual is a way for the local

parish community to send catechumens to the Bishop to be called to the Easter Sacraments.

Julia Bannon, Randy Khinkis, Jennifer Solares and Samantha Stamlie, having never been baptized, will sign the Book of the Elect, marking their pledge to move towards receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirma-tion and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. James Ripley, who is already our brother in Christ by virtue of his baptism in another faith tradition, will be blessed as he continues to the final preparations for his reception in the Catholic Church.

A Lenten Journey to Elderhood

FEBRUARY 18, 2018 - FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

LENTEN SPIRITUALITY FOR THE CARE OF THE EARTH

In the coming weeks the Green Team Ministry will offer a series of reflections on Lent. These reflections were developed by the Passionist Center for Spirit and Earth, and they focus on how to use the traditional Lenten spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to protect God's creation, embrace Gospel justice, and nurture spiritual fulfillment.

Week One -- SIMPLICITY: Fasting from over-consumption and living more simply.

Voluntary simplicity is a growing movement among Christians around the world. As we awaken to the realization that our habitual and daily choices are damaging creation and impoverishing other members of the human family, people of faith are asking: how can we live in a way that is environmentally friendly and socially just?

Many people in the US now believe that our cultural priorities are out of balance. The greed, selfishness and consumer mentality are disturbing realities. They crowd out more meaningful values such as family time, community involvement, and spiritual fulfillment.

Some people are moving toward a more simple life because it offers greater satisfaction than our high stress consumer society. But simplicity is no longer an alternative for a few ascetics. The footprint we leave on the Earth is far too big. If we are going to unite ourselves as a human family, it is crucial that people living in affluent nations begin cultivating lifestyles of simplicity and sustainability. Lent is an opportunity to make a start.

Fasting is a long-established Lenten practice. This year focus your Lenten fast on ways to give up excessive use of the Earth's resources. Experiment with daily choices which are more environmentally sustainable and socially just caring for God's creation and caring for God's people.

ACTION SUGGESTION: Try setting purchasing limits that fit with your values. Adopt a less-is-more attitude. Discover the contentment in sensing that what you have is enough.

ADDICTIONS, CHURCH RESPONSE AND HOW YOU CAN HELP - NEW MINISTRY

As you may already know, America is experiencing an ever-increasing rate of drug overdoses resulting in death, and other forms of addiction are on the rise, an epidemic which has become a national health crisis. We all read about it, see TV ads, talk and think about it (maybe?). Churches are responding with help and hope, providing confidential assistance in a safe environment! Here at St. Ann, we have begun plans for a new ministry devoted to keep us informed, and provide resources and assistance to those who are affected by addictions. No one can or need fight this battle alone! It is a "WE" effort! Please join us for an informational meeting on Thursday evening, March 15, 2018, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Pope John Paul Community Room (FDC). Deacon Moore Hank and Theresa Hank from St. James Church in Pennington will provide an overview of Hope, a ministry at St. James developed to assist those whose lives are--directly or indirectly--affected by concerns involving alcohol, drug abuse, and other addictions. All are welcome to attend this opportunity to learn, ask questions, receive support in a non-judgmental manner and explore how you can help. For questions, please contact Sharon Flynn (609) 799-2927, or at [email protected].
