Landscape RestorationPressure is mounting to get more food and raw materials from the land, large areas of which are already degraded. Soil and landscape restoration strategies are available, but the political will, research and resources are often lacking to put them into practice. Done smartly – underpinned by good, integrated research – landscape restoration can support efforts to achieve several Sustainable Development Goals.

Tenure and RightsThere is good evidence that sustainable landscape management is tied closely to strong customary tenure and clear, uncontested land rights. Conversely, deforestation and degradation go hand in hand with weak, poorly defined rights. Driven by this shift in thinking, the last few decades have seen a massive, if piecemeal and uneven, shift toward legal recognition of customary land rights and tenure.

Finance and TradeGlobal trade and finance constitute a fundamental driver of land-use decisions worldwide. Despite noteworthy initiatives and partnerships, we have yet to mobilize the capital to drive sustainable development, trade and sustainability are too often separated, and matching private finance to sustainable land uses is seldom easy. While the constraints are many, progress is being made, with lessons to share.

Achieving Climate and Development GoalsClimate change and development goals are intricately connected. To make progress, we need to measure progress, which means setting benchmarks and agreed metrics based on common, reliable information sources. Care is needed to ensure we track all aspects of the landscape – biophysical, socioeconomic, and cultural – at every scale. Much work remains to be done, but good research and examples of best practice highlight the way forward.

Pilgrims en route to the Nanda Devi temple, Uttarakhand, India. Every 12 years, thousands of pilgrims make the 200-kilometer trek through grasslands, fields and glaciers to worship the Himalayan goddess Nanda Devi. Devotees consider the monsoon rains to be the tears of the goddess – just one example of how spirituality cannot be separated from nature for communities in this rural landscape.
