A simple step tomake our town more beautiful

Maintaining the subur-ban quality of life hasalways been important totown Councilman GaryHudes, who spearheadedthe town's anti-graffitiefforts. Now the town hasadopted an ordinance toprohibit advertising onpublic property such asutility poles. TownSupervisor Kate Murrayrecognized him as the forcebehind this change.

The ordinance may bechallenged in the courts, but could be a way to helpmake our streets moreattractive.

Have you ever noticedthe highways in Vermontthat display business signsin a uniform, tasteful way? That way the beautifulfoliage that attracts tourists still keeps top billing.

Decades ago in some upscale villages in the Townof Hempstead, homeowners were not even allowed todisplay “For Sale” signs. If you wanted to buy a houseyou had to know someone or deal with a Realtor.

We are not sure how “Found Pets” or “GarageSale” signs will be treated. But we do want to remindour readers that our “Found Pet” ads are free. Weoffer “Garage Sale” kits to our classified advertisersthat can be put on their lawns or cars.

Advertising in the local community newspaper andwebsite is more economical than printing and postinga bunch of signs anyway. It also helps support thenewspaper that serves as your community forum andbulletin board.

THANK YOU! The AmericanLegion Auxiliary 1282 would liketo thank the members of the com-munity “for their generosity dur-ing our poppy distribution.Without their help we could nothelp our veterans,” they wrote toMerrick Life.

You can take it with you...To subscribe call 378-5320, today!

The most recent Medicaid regulationsnow permit individuals to set aside a portion oftheir assets in an irrevocable trust account inorder to have funds for future funeral expenses.

The process is reasonably simple, and no doubt the most difficult aspect ofit is the recognition that you need to begin making anticipated funeralarrangements for someone near and dear to you.

Questions we've been asked...My mother may soon be applying for Medicaid.

How does this affect funeral arrangements?

What happens is as follows:• A family will make an appointment with us to discuss what kind of

funeral arrangements will be preferred.• We discuss options and record their wishes. The discussion covers

not only the funeral home services but cemetery, church, monument inscription, newspaper notices, etc. We inform the family of exactly what those costs are at the present time.

• Those funds can then be deposited in our FDIC insured PRE-PLAN Trust. This Trust pays sufficient interest to allow us to guarantee the funeral home costs which can be expected to be higher in the future because of inflation.

• While the funds remain in the name of the individual who will be receiving assistance from Medicaid they are not considered an asset which otherwise would affect Medicaid eligibility.

If we can help you with this important matter, call us and our know-ledgeable staff will answer your questions. Moreover, there is no cost or fee involved in establishing a PRE-PLAN Trust.

Raising funds for Calhoun’s new retail storeby Anthony Belbol

Some people go out of their way tohelp because they have a good head ontheir shoulders and a big heart. Thesepeople like to support those who lovewhat they do everyday.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central HighSchool District showed its heart by having afundraiser this month at Wantagh Lanes fornext year’s Calhoun retail store.

Cheryl Gitlitz, who developed and organ-ized the bowling fundraiser, was in charge ofthe whole event. Once Mrs. Gitlitz’s requestfor a bowling fundraiser was approved byCalhoun Principal David Seinfeld, shereserved all the necessary lanes for the event.

Mrs Gitlitz said she “was thankful that somany prep-for-life kids, parents, staff, fami-lies and the Kohl’s store – which brought$500 – were all able to come.”

The event had a good outcome because,as Mrs. Gitlitz continued, “It was thinkingoutside the box.” Mrs. Gitlitz was happywith the teachers who came and support-ed the fundraiser, because she said thatthey “made amazing signs and helped tomake the raffle baskets.”

There was another event, a Shopathon, atAnnie Sez, the day after the bowlingfundraiser. Between the two events, $6,000was raised, which got the prep program clos-er to its goal of $10,000.

This newspaper also interviewed Mr.

Seinfeld, who had nothing but positivethings to say about the fundraiser. Heexplained that “I was impressed there wereso many people who sponsored the event. The funds will help with design, invento-ry, signs and furniture for the retail store. Iam excited for this program because it isunique and rewarding to the students,” headded.

One of the leaders going into next year isErin Murphy, who may become the storemanager, and who had a blast at the fundrais-er. She said that “I was surprised that somany people came to the event, and it was afun experience to take part in.”

Erin told what her experience will be likeif she becomes the manager, saying “I will

learn stock inventory, how to manage peopleand money, and retail jobs.” The retail storeis an example of the state’s work with theOffice for People With DevelopmentalDisabilities. The OPWDD helps to give prepkids an experience at a paying job. A part ofthis program is the Employment TrainingProgram, which will help the kids maintainand acquire a paying, competitive job.

This fundraiser was important because itgave the kids who work hard the chance toexperience work that they may be able to doin the future.

Anthony Belbol is a Calhoun senior in theSenior Experience Program who was anintern at Bellmore Life and Merrick Life.
