As the railroads developed, Southern Railway’s main east-west and north-south lines intersected in Rowan County. Located midway between Atlanta and Washington D.C., Southern Railway President Samuel B. Spencer recognized the importance of this location. In 1896, Spencer authorized construction of Southern Railway’s new, huge steam engine repair facility in what is now the town of Spencer.
The heart of Rowan is Historic Salisbury which was for many years the largest city in western North Carolina. Today, it’s a vibrant and growing part of the state’s rich landscape, situated in a key spot between the Charlotte metro area and the Triangle.
Formerly a frontier town, Salisbury has been touched by some of the greatest names and events of American history. George Washington visited the town during his southern tour in 1791. Daniel Boone grew up exploring the country outside Salisbury before he blazed trails in the wilderness.
Salisbury is home to a growing arts community, four colleges and a diverse group of businesspeople. Visitors enjoy touring historic destinations, beautiful homes and a wide range of businesses in a flourishing downtown. Did You Know? During the Civil War, Rowan County was the location of the only Confederate War Prison. Today, the site is home to the National Cemetery honoring those killed in the Civil War.
