Accessibility and Universal Design Policies
Good design is accessible design. This is the basis for the principles of Universal Design (UD).
From the need to keep toddlers from falling onto the sharp corners of furniture, to the need for
reading glasses to mitigate age-related eye changes, our perceptions of the world and the way
that we interact with it change constantly over our lifetimes. The ability to successfully navigate
an environment has an huge impact on our sense of control and our well-being. An environment
that is free of barriers is also aesthetically pleasing.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) applies the principles of universal design to the learning
environment. Access must be integrated into the design of curriculums from the beginning.
Barriers that never existed never need to be mitigated. It is important that access is provided not
only to information but also to all aspects of learning.
Whenever possible Fair Studio will follow Section 508 standards using the Web Content
Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 to apply the 7 principles of UDL into the learning environment and
materials of Fair Studio in the following ways:
1. Inclusiveness- Fair Studio will make every effort to make its services available to all
students who are willing make the commitment necessary to be a part of our learning
community. Every member of the studio is a full member no matter the age or ability.
Contact information for questions or concerns regarding disability-related accommodations
and other special learning needs will be published on the website and made available to all.
2. Physical Access- Fair Studio is committed to providing an accessible learning
environment for persons with disabilities through the identification and elimination of
physical barriers both in the privatestudio setting and on the studios website. Since the
studio serves a student body that ranges in age from 7 to adult, accommodation for size and
varying ability is an inherent part of what we do. Every effort will be made to provide any
additional accommodations that may be needed. The website will be designed to be fully
switch and keyboard accessible.
3. Delivery Methods- It is the nature of private instruction to deliver materials using
multi-modal methods (auditory, visual, tactile), to develop the best pathways to improve
knowledge and skill for each learner. Remote sessions conducted via Skype or other shared
on-line environment sessions will include text and visual communication, and shared
whiteboards. Whenever possible, content on FairStudio.com will be presented with multiple
means of representation allowing the user to customize the display and provide auditory and
visual options.
