FEZ SEZ JUNE 2012

Dear Nobles and Ladies, It gives me a great deal of pleasure to be able to introduce to everyone two new Nobles: Noble Orest Kitzul and Lady Carole and Noble Douglas R. Goddard. Nobility and the public at large, that we can continue to have fund-raisers that Shriners and non-Shriners can attend and get our name out to the public in terms of what we do for the community, especially our children. Upcoming events include the ‘SUMMERFEST’ Jumble Sale and Family Day on Saturday June 9th from 10am to 3pm. Each and every-one can buy a table for $50.00 and clean-out your garage. The children will be entertained by our famous Clowns as well as our Job’s Daughters have numerous games and challenges to keep the kids busy, entertained and having fun! The Tin Lizzies will be doing their excellent BBQ’ing they’re already known for, at very nominal prices, of course, and the Al Azhar Clowns will be doing their infamous picture-taking as well as awarding prizes left over from our Circus. I understand the Mounted Patrol may be making an appearance as well and any other Unit that would like to participate is of course, welcomed. ‘Participation’ is the key! Quite possibly, several Units could combine their efforts in buying a table to raise money for their own use or contribute their sales to the Transportation Fund. You be the judge! Our next major fund-raising event will be our ‘OKTOBERFEST 2012’ being planned for Saturday October 20th, 2012. Tickets are now available $50.00 per ticket at the Shrine Centre – payment required when tickets are reserved VISA, MC, Interact, and cheques accepted. Look for further details in upcoming communications! It’ll be a great event – don’t miss out! Lady Kathy and I wish you all a very fun-filled and safe summer holiday season. See you at the Parades! Yours in the Faith, Kent Galbraith, Potentate.

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS

Greetings Nobles and Ladies. Phew! Tax season is finally over - for those who don't know I am an Accountant by profession and my small firm had our busiest year yet for tax returns. Good for me - not so good for the Shrine. My apologies to those who called or came in to talk to me about something and I was not available. Thanks, also to Pat and Cinde in the office who took care of a lot of the routine administrative stuff that the Recorder does and a special thanks to Noble Garth Border who came in for a couple of weeks after he got back from Arizona to "hold down the fort". The rush has now subsided and I am ready to resume a regular schedule of availability. Beginning right after PNSA I will be in the office all day on Tuesdays, Wednesday afternoons and Friday afternoons. I will also be here on any other day there is a scheduled meeting with the Divan, the Board of Trustees or any of the special committees that require my assistance. Thanks again to everyone for their patience and please feel free to drop in for a coffee at any time. GREETINGS FROM THE CHAPLAIN

First of all, congratulations to the Tins on an excellent meal before the last Stated Business Meeting. The steak, baked potato and Caesar Salad with dessert and a beverage for $15 is an incredible bargain. If you haven’t been out for this meal I would highly recommend it. Secondly, Thank you for all the comments on Lady Doreen’s health. She has now entered Long Term Care for Alzheimer’s Dementia and is doing well. The timing has allowed me to take courses on Care giving and I have learned a lot. That is actually an understatement! The one thing I have been shocked is to learn how many people do not have Personal Directives, Enduring Power of Attorney or even a Will. They are all so misunderstood. The one I will deal with here is the Personal Directive (PD). A PD is a written document that ‘speaks’ for you when you are not able to, letting others know what your choices would be. These may include what medical treatments you would want, where you would like to live, who you would like to live with, choices for personal activities, any required legal decisions, who will look after your minor children if you are not capable, etc. It cannot be used for any illegal activity. When Lady Doreen went into the Hospital, I filed a copy on her behalf. You don’t have any fear that the person you designate will take over your life without justification. I was required to fill out a form explaining why I was doing this. Then a doctor investigated the circumstances and had to approve it before it became active. While there is extensive information on the Government of Alberta web site and it is legal to make your own if it conforms to the legislation, I chose to do ours through a lawyer so that I was assured it was correct. It was and believe me it paid big dividends by my having less hassles at a very stressful time. If there are any requests I will explore the Enduring Power of Attorney in the next issue which is equally important. Also, when doing your Will, don’t forget the Shriners Hospitals. In the light of Grace, Noble R. Dean Cowan Chaplain 2012

FIRST LADY’S PAGE

The beginning of May Illustrious Sir Kent and I attended Al Shamal’s Ceremonial and had a wonderful time visiting with the ladies of Northern Alberta. We were delighted that First Lady Lynda LeGros from Gizeh attended so we had the opportunity to boast about our apparel for the “Hats and Heels” Ladies Luncheon at the upcoming PNSA meetings in Nanaimo. Lady Victoria Shimmons recently organized a workshop that provided about 16 ladies with the material to create Fascinators to wear to the luncheon. It was a fun afternoon which showed us that our Al Azhar Ladies are very creative – Thank you Lady Victoria for getting us together. I’m sure we will be challenged at PNSA for the best adorned Shrine Center Ladies.

Following a wonderful steak dinner at the April stated business meeting the ladies were joined by Laurie Martinez, Professional Organizer, from Simply Neat Ltd. Laurie offered some pointers as to why we collect things, how we should organize things and how to get rid of the clutter. The ladies attending also had some helpful hints to share with each other. I’m sure everyone left that evening with at least one good idea, if not more.

Now that everyone has begun to de-clutter over the past few weeks, I hope you’re setting aside those treasures you have decided to remove from ‘your’ space. Summerfest, June 9th, will give you a great opportunity to get some cash for your treasures by providing others the opportunity to purchase your wares. You can rent a table with your Unit, by yourself, or with another lady, and you’ll find comfort in knowing that your treasures will find another loving home. Please contact Pat or Cinde at the Shrine office for rental information. If you just have a few things you would like to donate to the fund-raiser, please drop them off at the Shrine Center on June the 8th and the Divan Ladies will add them to their table.

I cannot close without thanking all of you who participated in the well-received ‘Swing into Spring’ event. What a wonderful evening of dancing and listening to the live music of the big band era provided by the “Hippocratic Oath”. We’re planning to make this an annual event. Everyone is very proud to have taken part in an evening where all the profits went directly to the Montreal Shiner’s Children’s Hospital.

I look forward to seeing you at the next event.

Happiness Always Lady Kathy

Long Term Plan Update

Getting Better for the Kids In 2011, your Divan developed a Long Term Plan as a guide to improve Al Azhar. The following is an update on progress. Our Membership and their Involvement The Membership Development Committee has been meeting regularly and has developed plans for promoting Al Azhar and the Shrine in the Shrine Centre and in the Calgary area. Swing into Spring was well attended and provided an opportunity for membership involvement. Our Building & Grounds The Buildings & Grounds Committee has been active in identifying and prioritizing improvements to our building and its grounds. Public exposure and recognition Mail-outs regarding Swing into Spring to northwest community groups were done. Mail-outs regarding future Shrine Centre events are planned. Support of our philanthropy Proceeds from Swing into Spring will be directed to Shriners Hospital for Children – Canada. In addition, some clubs and units have 2012 casinos that should generate $40K - $50K each for both the Shriners Hospital for Children – Canada and the Patient Transportation Fund. For 2013, Al Azhar will host the East West Hockey Challenge between the Calgary Hitmen and the Vancouver Giants. All proceeds from this game will go to the Shriners Hospital for Children – Canada. Administrative structure as well as Strength of our Units and Shrine Clubs requires further planning work.

Patient Transportation Fund Governance Changes

The Patient Transportation Fund is a registered charity and is used to provide transportation for patients (and parents) to our hospitals for treatment. The Fund has been managed by a Board of Directors consisting of the Divan of Al Azhar. In response to a recent audit by Revenue Canada, the constitution of the Fund was revised to include the Immediate Past Potentate and the President of the Board of Trustees on the Fund Board. This will create a “separation” of the Fund governance from the governance of the Al Azhar Society (the fraternal side). The Fund constitution was also revised to require separate Fund Board meetings. In addition, the 2011 audit of Al Azhar financials did not include the Patient Transportation Fund financials. The Fund Board is optimistic the above changes will provide a satisfactory response to Revenue Canada audit observations. In 2011, Fund income was $141K and expenses were $156K.

JUST A REMINDER

Temple by-laws regarding expenditures by Units or Shrine Clubs: “No Unit or Shrine Club may spend in excess of $1,000.00 for capital expenditure without prior approval of the Potentate.” (Article IX Paragraph 10, and Article X Paragraph 5) Also important to note is Article VI, Paragraph 14: “Except as specifically provided by the by-laws of the Imperial Council, or the Temple, no unit, shrine club, group of persons or person has the authority expressed or implied, to act as the agent of, to act on behalf of, or by its acts or omission to obligate or bind the Temple

CLOWN UNIT I'm sure that it is known that 6 of our Medicine Hat clowns and 2 Calgary clowns attended the PNSCA competitions in Nanaimo, of which 5 of Medicine Hat's elite and 1 of Calgary's elite were in the competition. Attendees from the Medicine Hat Clown Unit were Len Helfrich, Wayne Knight, Angus Gordon, Sandy Campbell, Dennis Fischer and John Maloney along with Calgary Unit were Rob Martin and Gary Saunders. John Maloney did not compete as he officiated as a PNSCA competition judge and Rob Martin of course is the secretary of PNSCA. May it be known that the Al Azhar Clown Unit is the unit to be recognized as number one throughout PNSCA, as we were the unit with the highest number of competition points and winners of the PNSCA Unit Jumbo Award (what a great job of team work by all). Our entire group of Al Azhar clowns participated in the PNSCA unit skit competition coming up with First Place in PNSCA Unit Skit trophy. Individual awards known to date are as follows: Leonard "Holler" Helfrich in Two Man Skit - Second Place, Unit Skit - First Place, Paradability - Top 5, Wayne "Bogey" Knight in Character Make up and Costume - Top 5, Two Man Skit - Third Place, Unit Skit - First Place, Sandy "Beans" Campbell in Tramp/Hobo Make up and Costume - First Place, Multi Balloon - Top 5, Unit Skit - First Place, Angus "Cookee" Gordon in Unit Skit - First Place, Gary "Pyro" Saunders in Character Make up and Costume - First Place, Two Man Skit - Third Place, Unit Skit - First Place, Dennis "Nitro" Fischer in Character Make-up and Costume - Second Place, Paradability - Top 5, One Man Skit - Top 5, Two Man Skit - Second Place, Single Balloon - Top 5, Multi Balloon - Second Place, Unit Skit - First Place. Finally the last award to be given out to a PNSCA clown was the Top Banana Award for clown achieving highest number of competition points that award went to Dennis "Nitro" Fischer. This is the second time that Dennis has received this top clown award, the last time he received this award was at 2010 PNSCA Competition.

Over and above the challenge of competition, all the Al Azhar Clowns participated in the Nanaimo Victoria Day Parade on Sunday and then moved on to Victoria for the Monday Victoria Day Parade - we are a hardy group of Joeys. It is with pride that I say I am so very proud and honoured to be a part of this elite group of Al Azhar Clowns.

TIN LIZZIE CORPS

Well another PNSA has come and gone and again the Tin Lizzies have taken second place in the four wheel competition. One day, with practice, we just might be able to finally beat El Korah. We had eight members there. What a great turn out. Fun was had by all and we are looking forward to 2013 in Lethbridge. We have had our first meat sale and will be having our second one just in time for stampede. Keep an eye on the website as we will have the order form up there to help you get the best cuts for those BBQ’s that will be happening. Speaking of stampede, parade season is upon us. The Tins will be out in force as per usual. We have several parades scheduled and hope to see all on the parade route. As per usual we will be at the Canmore and Banff parades along with the BBQ to have some Shrine fun between the two parades.

EVENTS COMMITTEE Hi everyone, just a short note from your Events Committee. Our first event, Swing into Spring Gala was a great time with a really great band - The Hippocratic Oath Big Band. The attendance was not great but everyone there seemed to have a great time. The committee learned from this venture and if anyone with "Marketing" experience, either a Noble, a Noble’s Lady, or someone that you know that could help us out, please have them contact us or come to the next meeting (call Wayne Capper for date and time) We really need the help in this area for all our future endeavours. For your enjoyment you can go to our website and look at the pictures from the Swing into Spring, to see just what you missed. Or if you were there just to see what a great time you had. Our next event “Summerfest” will be held on Saturday June 9th starting at 10:00 a.m. Don’t miss this great event with family and friends – Admission is Free. This fall on October 20th we will be holding an “Okotoberfest” with the proceeds once again going to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. RUTTERS On behalf of the Al Azhar Rutters I want to congratulate our New Divan and it’s great to see what great hands Al Azhar is in. They are going to do a great job, especially Noble Byron Nelson who is the first of many Rutters to hopefully appear on the divan. It has been a busy few months for the Athletic unit. We had our election of officers at our yearly meeting on St. Patrick’s day and on behalf of the officers we are looking forward to participating in fund raising for providing care for children and families in need and showing the community what being a Shriner is all about…Charity and having fun doing it. Firstly Nobles Derrik Telford, Chad Nelson, Brad Peterson, and Byron Nelson participated in the Take it to the Streets street hockey Tournament in Banff, and considering their lack of scoring punch finished with a 1-2 record. This hopefully will be an annual event for the Rutters. Also a number of Rutters participated in the yearly Rams Rugby Club fundraiser in order to promote the game of rugby in Calgary; a lot of good friends were reunited. Up next on our schedule is the Stampede Sevens Rugby tournament at the Rugby fields July 7th. If any Nobles wish to participate with us please contact me at [email protected], and also we are looking forward to Summerfest Family fun Day held on Jun 9th at Al Azhar. AIR CORPS As I write this column it is only a few more days before some of our members leave for Nanaimo to take part in this year’s PNSA. We will have six planes and six pilots. On the Victoria weekend we will have two planes going the High River Parade. We are looking forward to this year’s parade season as we have a few new members who will be taking their first spin. I want to say a special thank you to one of our long time members Ches Bennett for allowing us to use the board room at Century Carpet One at 11 Avenue and 11 Street for many years for our monthly meetings, we come from all over town and this is a great central location. Members of the Air Corps, even if you do not have a plane for a certain parade come out and support your fellow pilots. Brian Baird Captain of the Air Corps MISSION STATEMENT OF THE SHRINERS

HOSPITAL REPORT 2012

This year our patient activity is starting to pick up. Since the end of January, we have had patients traveling to our Hospital approximately 5 trips a month. We still have approximately: 40 patients going to Spokane 12 patients going to Montreal 2 patients going to Boston 3 patients going to Portland 1 patient going to Sacramento 1 patient going to St. Louis 2 patients going to Salt Lake City

Some of these patients go as much as 4 times a year, for check-ups or surgery. Others go 1 or 2 times a year. It all depends on their particular situation. When patients go to Spokane, we try and send Guests along to assist and visit our Hospital there. I have a list of hosts and am always looking for others who have not been to the Spokane Hospital. Please e-mail me with your names and phone numbers if you are interested. Any new host will have first opportunity to go. Each of the Hospitals that we send our patients to specialize in different areas of treatment: Montreal is excellent in the treatment of:

- Osteogenesis imperfect or brittle bone disease - -Scoliosis - Limb extending

Boston is for burns Sacramento and Boston for port wine blemishes to the skin Spokane and Salt Lake City treat a lot of orthopedic problems from cerebral palsy to limb deficiencies. Portland for cleft palate and dwarfism. Our new patients are referred to me by Shriners and their wives, through family, friends and business associates. Some are referred to us by Doctors, Teachers and health associations. If you think you know of a child that needs our help, contact me first and let me know what the problem is, before telling their parents that we can help them. I have received many calls from people looking for financial assistance, for diseases and conditions that we do not treat. When you phone me, I will assess the request and tell you if they fall under the mandate of our care. Then we will proceed with an application to submit. This eliminates any embarrassment on your part or the Shriners. Please continue to help us in this great philanthropy. Dave Dyson, P.P. Hospital Chairman.

LOCAL BOY GETS NEW LEASE ON LIFE. Article as printed in the Alaska Highway News on January 11, 2012 - Brianne Zwambag, Staff Writer

At six years old, most kids are running, jumping and playing their energy out however they possibly can. But the story is a little different for Tristan Hesketh, whose rare disease grounded him last year. Now, with the help of the local Shriners Chapter, Tristan is hoping to be back on his feet in the near future. He has a rare disease called Legg Calve Perthes Disease, which cuts off the blood flow to bones in one side of the hip resulting in the death and degeneration of the hip joint. It is estimated that only one in 1200 people are diagnosed with this condition. Because of the rarity of the disease, finding a diagnosis and treatment plan for Tristan was a challenge for his parents. “He didn’t want to walk, he didn’t want to do any sports, he didn’t want to ride a bike, he didn’t want to do anything,” said Shauna Meyer, Tristan’s mother. “And because he’s only 6 and he’s 4’4, all the doctors we saw just said he was having growing pains. “ Tristan said that he was in tons of pain when he was walking and running, but the pain seemed to be the worst in his kindergarten classes when he had to sit cross-legged on the floor. Shauna had been taking Tristan to doctors for over a year and a half complaining of her son’s never-ending pain when they finally got a clue about what might be causing it from a chance encounter with a walk-in clinic doctor who was treating the child’s ear infection. “She was actually the first doctor who physically put her hands on his legs to see what his pain was,” said Shauna. The doctor thought he might be suffering from developmental dysplasia and instructed Shauna to take Tristan for an x-ray immediately. However, what she learned was shocking. “I literally felt ill when I saw the x-ray. He’s missing a whole portion of bone.” During the year and a half that Tristan had been complaining of pain, the Perthes Disease had gone through the entire process of killing and breaking down the femoral bone on his left side. With a diagnosis in hand, Shauna began seeking out doctors who could help treat her son’s rare condition and found nothing but frustration and questions. “There’s absolutely nothing you can do to interfere with the disease and no doctors seemed to be able to help us,” said Shauna. One doctor in Dawson Creek told the family that he did not know what to do with the disease and suggested that they wait until Tristan was in debilitating pain and perform a hip replacement when he was older. “Being told to live with a child in an excruciating amount of pain for seven or eight years? What parent wants to be told that?” Another doctor in Edmonton told them that Tristan’s bone was now regenerating and that he should return home to full activity, which the family has since learned would have had devastating results. A doctor they were referred to in Vancouver said that there was nothing they could do for the left hip, but the right hip was now beginning the process and they should perform surgery to open up the hip joint and hold it open while it goes through the death phase. After months of misinformation, frustration and sleepless nights, Shauna got a tip while at work that changed her life. “I’m an esthetician and one day I was waxing a client and telling her about my frustration with what is going on and she told me that I needed to contact Shriners because they could help me.” As it turned out, the client had a child who had severe bowel issues that required specialized treatment. With the help of the Shriners, she had received the treatment she needed and the family found the support they were looking for. “I knew about the hats you see them wearing in pictures, but I had no idea what they did,” said Shauna. After a little research, Shauna discovered that the Shriners mission was to help sick children and she applied for help with Tristan’s case. After just a few months, their application was accepted and they were given 10 day’s notice to meet with a specialist in Tristan’s disease at a Shriners hospital in Portland, Oregon.

“They were like a slice of heaven. Just the weight of the stress that has been relieved now that they’re helping us is amazing.” With only 10 day’s notice and no passports, Shriners also helped the family get prepared for their trip. At no expense to them, the Shriners flew the family to Vancouver and put them up in a hotel for three days while they got their passports. They paid for meals, provided emotional support and helped them in any way possible. Once the passports were in, they were taken to Portland, Oregon and settled in to a hotel before visiting the Shriners Hospital for Children. “The hospital is amazing. You drive up this mountain to this seven-storey hospital that is so serene and beautiful. You walk in the front doors and the lady at the front desk says ‘Good Morning Tristan. Welcome to Shriners’.” Shauna said that the personal and inviting experience was such a welcome change for the chaotic and confusing experiences they had at hospitals in Alberta and B.C. as they searched for answers. “You’re devastated and you don’t know what or who to listen to, and then you get to this hospital and it’s just a wonderful experience. They greet the child and they know who he is,” said Shauna. ‘The kids feel like rock stars here.” From the entertainment options to the handmade blankets to a special Christmas gingerbread house made exclusively for the child, Shauna said that this hospital really took care of them. “No matter what hall we walked down or who we passed, that person stopped and introduced themselves whether it was a nurse or a cafeteria worker. And [Tristan] felt like that was his place.” Now that Tristan has been accepted as a Shriners patient, he will be under their medical care until he is 21 years old. He has a personal team that includes a care coordinator, a nurse and a doctor who will treat his Perthes disease as needed until that time, all at no expense to the family. “I was so extremely stressed out not knowing what to do for my child. I had no idea what kind of help I was going to get for him. And now, he has his own team to look after him and I feel like a different person. I’m sleeping at night again when I didn’t sleep for months. “ Shauna said that she has the Shriners to thank for that feeling and she hopes that other parents will sit up and take note that this organization is here in the community for kids that need help. “I want other parents to know that Shriners is there. If they’re having an issue with their child… that they can contact Shriners and they’ll help. It’s regardless of your religion, race or income; it’s all about the child. “ Dave Middleton, President of the North Peace Chapter, said that Shauna was right and they hope more awareness of their services will be brought amongst the community from stories like this. “We’re here to help children. Whether it’s a burned child or one that has a medical defect that we can help them with,” said Middleton. “Some of these people may not realize that we’re here and they use their B.C. Medical, but that doesn’t cover travel or anything. And that can be really difficult for some families.” Middleton explained that Shriners has 22 hospitals across North America that are privately run and funded through the Shriners, but local chapters such as those in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and Fort Nelson help ensure that families can get to these hospitals without any financial strain. “Mainly what our club does is look after travel,” said Middleton. “If they’re from this part of the country and they’re accepted as a Shriners patient, there is no expense to the parents whatsoever.” Middleton said they do whatever they can in the community to raise money to send kids for treatment, but the clubs all support each other to ensure that funds are available to every child accepted as a Shriners patient. “Thank-you isn’t enough,” said Shauna. “I don’t know how to say it – I’m speechless.” Shauna said that without Shriners, Tristan may still be searching for treatment and be facing a life of pain and uncertainty. She hopes that his story can help other families find happy endings, too. Tristan’s hip joint bone is now starting to regenerate on his left hand side as the one on the right side is going through the death phase. With treatment, it is estimated that it will take 4-6 months for a new bone to regenerate. Once this has happened on both sides, Tristan may still require surgery to ensure the bones are sitting in the correct place. However, the family is hopeful that Tristan will be in less pain, more mobile and moving around without a walker within a few years.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE

We are carrying on the initiative started last year to ask the various units and clubs to dig deep and assist with the many upgrades that need to be done at Al Azhar. The Tin Lizzies donated $3800 last year for our almost new lawn mower. They will be coordinating Water and Power to the campsites this year. The Oriental Band has pledged $2000 for new picnic tables. The Patrol has pledged $2000 which I hope will be enough to replace the air compressor which prevents the fire sprinklers from filling and going off. The one we have is too small. Other projects listed below are priorities. 1. The heating system has pneumatic thermostats that need to be replaced as they are 50 years old and $320 each to replace. We have 13 zones on the system but each can be replaced one at a time or as pledged money comes in. 2. Maintenance contracts for our new HVAC system must be investigated, selected and paid for. The warranties are running out soon. The new system needs to change filters three times a year and this costs $1200 per change. 3. A new air intake in the boiler room must be installed to balance the system - cost to be investigated. Others --- reno for the ladies bathroom upstairs, floor and carpet replacement, swing gate for the vehicle parking lot by the football field, Signage for the entire property, etc. etc. The list of needs is long so please give what you can and let me or someone on the Divan know so we can plan ahead. The unforeseen expenses last year leave us in a cash poor state for a few years. Garth Racher Building and Grounds Committee

GREETINGS FROM THE GREETERS The Greeters Annual Spring meeting was held on May 16th at the Shrine Centre and was heartily enjoyed by all who attended. In keeping with our Potentate, Illustrious Kent Galbraith's desire to bring wider awareness of the Shrine to the community at large, we encouraged our members to invite guests who were not necessarily Shriners. We did have several guests join us for the evening. We invited Richard de Boer, President of the Calgary Mosquito Aircraft Society, to be our Guest Speaker. Richard gave a very descriptive and enthusiastic presentation on his long and arduous battle to retain and restore the de Havilland Mosquito and Hurricane aircraft owned by the City of Calgary. In recognition of his presentation a $100.00 contribution was made to the Montreal Shriners' Hospital. He was thanked by Illustrious Sir Kent and presented with the "100 Million Dollar Club" certificate. Two of our guests were former Officers in the Royal Canadian Air force who flew the de Havilland Mosquito bombers during WWII, Lloyd Jones and Evert Hermanson. Evert's wife Dora was also in attendance. A special thank you to Noble Morris Esber for inviting these two fine gentlemen who served our country so well. And a thank you to Noble Bob Riley for inviting another of our guests Rory Waite. The Greeters' next event will be our Annual Summer BBQ. It will be held this year at the Shrine Centre on July 25th. So please mark your calendars accordingly. We will provide you with more details following the meeting of your executive on May 31st. Yours in the Sunshine of the Shrine, Noble Wes van der Lee President

AL AZHAR MOUNTED PATROL After a rather relaxing winter the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol (AMP) members are busy practicing every Wednesday evening. As in many past years ride practice is followed by a delicious dinner prepared by our dedicated ladies. The last few weeks saw the AMP Nobles busy sprucing up the barn. New stalls have been built, and new mangers installed. Everything has been painted white again. All this work was done keeping in mind the historic value of the barn. According to the horses, they are very pleased with the outcome and the renovations will be thoroughly enjoyed by our four-legged friends. Earlier in the year a grain feed hopper was installed by the Northwest corner of the barn. On May 21, 2012 long week-end, eight Nobles and their horses rode in the High River Parade. From all reports it was a very good parade and enjoyed by all. Keep June 10th, 2012 in mind as the Mounted Patrol will be holding a Fathers/Mother’s Day combined BBQ. This will be a fun event and we look forward to a good turnout. All Units are welcome to attend. Time, date and cost will be advised later. If you are interested in attending please do not hesitate to contact one of the AMP members for more information. The AMP is looking forward to celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede, by participating in the parade on July 6th, 2012. The Unit will be performing their musical ride in the Big Top on Monday, July 9th, 2012. As far as we know now, the ride will be performed around 2:30 PM. The AMP is looking forward to attending several other parades over the season. In closing we wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe summer. Roy Jardine

WILD ROSE SHRINE CLUB The winter months have been quiet but each and every meeting has been well attended and under the direction of Noble and President Mark McDonnell planning a busy summer was the end result of each session. We will be appearing in at least five parades with the wee buses. We are looking forward to these outings as our miniature buses have been converted to electric engines - more efficient, reliable and maneuverable. Again we will thrill the kids on the curbs. The parade list and drivers this year are being assembled by Noble Dale Hackinen, without his hard work we would not be able to participate in the parades as scheduled. In May the annual family breakfast was held. The numbers in attendance surpassed last year reaching a total of seventy or more. We are so fortunate to have Noble and Chief Chef Peter Proudlock and his crew provide the food and make everything happen for the fourth year. Thank you Peter. I also want to mention a planned fellowship day coming this summer, that is Larry’s golf tournament. Details and dates to follow. From the executives and the Nobles of Wild Rose everyone have a fine summer see you on parade! The lowly scribe..... Norm Brain

☻My parents recently retired. Mom always wanted to learn to play the piano, so dad bought her a piano for her birthday. A few weeks later, I asked how she was doing with it. "Oh, we returned the piano." said my Dad, "I persuaded her to switch to a clarinet instead." "How come?" I asked. "Because," he answered, "with a clarinet, she can't sing."

MEDICINE HAT (plus one) CLOWN UNIT

Our clown unit has not stopped since February when we attended the ISCA (International Shrine Clown Association) Mid-Winter Competition in Billings Mt. We just got home from the PNSCA (Pacific Northwest Shrine Clown Association) Convention in Nanaimo BC. Six of the trusty eight (Sandy “Beans” Campbell, Dennis “Nitro” Fischer, Angus “Cookeee” Gordon, Leonard “Holler” Helfrich, Wayne “Bogey” Knight and John “no dough” Maloney, travelled from sunny southern Alberta to beautiful Vancouver Island. After a 1342 km drive up and over the Rockies I sure formed a new appreciation for the flat straight roads of Alberta. Gary “Pyro” Saunders from Calgary joined us in Nanaimo making a total of seven clowns from Al Azhar. Al Azhar Clowns won the Jumbo award. This award is given to the Unit that accumulates the most points in competition. All of the Al Azhar Clowns (except “no dough” who is a ISCA Judge) brought home individual awards in costume/makeup, paradeability, one man skit, two man skits and group skits, along with one and multiple balloon tying. Not only did we attend the competitions we attended the Empire Day Parade in Nanaimo and then five of us attended the Victoria Day parade in Victoria. Attending and participating in the competitions at the PNSCA is a great way to meet old friends and make new ones. Al Azhar is hosting the PNSA in July 2013 in Lethbridge AB. Our new PNSCA President Jim “mad maxx” Nasby ( Al Bedoo) has asked all clowns in Alberta to help organize our events. Therefore any ideas you may have please forward to the PNSCA executive.

VINTAGE CARS It’s been a while since I wrote a report in the magazine so I thought an update on the Vintage Car Club would let you all know what’s been happening and our scribe has been very busy with his job. This year the AAVCC held a fun day car rally starting at Ill. Sir John and Lady Elsje Thorp’s residence ending at Noble Ernie and Lady Pat Hilland’s (Ranch) in High River. This is Ernie’s report of the event. A very successful day started at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 12th. The Tin Lizzies group were at the Thorp’s which was the starting point and served a great breakfast while Bill and Myrna Sheppard handed out instructions for the car Rally. The route for the event took each car thru Cochrane, Bragg Creek, Turner Valley, Black Diamond and High River and finishing at the Hilland’s located at the junction of highway 2 and Highway 547 to Mossleigh. The last car to arrive at the finish was at 3:15 pm. There was a distance of approximately 175 km with several stops along the way, one of which each car was given a very special painted rock created by Victoria Shimmons. Victoria then attended the BBQ later in the day after attending to each car load as they came to the house asking for a “rock”. The Foothills Shrine Club attended to the BBQ and two trucks arrived at Ernie’s with some 75 steaks, BBQ’s, tables etc. to serve 72 hungry people who attended the event. The steaks were cooked and served by the Foothills Shrine Club members and their wives. They were truly the best steaks. Bill and Myrna Sheppard tested everyone’s mind by having some 108 questions that were to be answered by the groups in route. A major handmade Trophy appeared and was presented to the high scoring group. Not sure who that was. A great day was had and another will be set up in the near future. No profits were made as we wanted this to be a total fun day at minimal cost The groups attending were Host club Vintage Cars, Tin Lizzies, Foothills Shrine Club, and Mounted Patrol who have graciously allowed the Vintage Cars unit to use their clubhouse.

All in all it was just a fun day Linda and I went south to visit a relative who is ailing and needed our attention thus we were unable to take part in the event rally and our regular meeting. In our travels we did notice a beautiful Shriners sign just north of Portland Oregon on the highway but were unable to take a picture of it. The sign was truly an eye catcher and stood out in 3D wood work and colors. Now on our return home we ran into the Donoghues, Pollhaus’s and Skagens in Sandpoint Idaho who were attending the annual car show named “Lost in the Fifties”. Every year they promote our show for the south of the border folks to attend our show here. Now back home it was time to ready our entry for the High River Annual Parade on the May 21st weekend. The turnout on behalf of the Al Azhar Shriners was great, even with a lot attending the PNSA in Nanaimo BC, but our unit had seven cars in the parade and the weather was just fine, plus no one ran out of fuel or broke down which was a bonus. So here we are on the final run to get ready for our annual Show N Shrine Car Show - Sat June the 23rd. This year we will be raising funds by selling tickets on a Fire Truck Peddle Car donated by PP Sir Dave Dyson. It’s a great little car for “youngins” and well worth the price of a ticket to win it. Tickets sell for $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 and will be for sale at the car show or any member in our unit. We are also asking for donation door prizes, items for the silent auction and giveaways for this event. If you would like to help in any way, please contact Carol Boyce for the info. This is our major time to raise funds for the kids and your donations will truly help. So come out to the show if you haven’t been before and enjoy the day. Another summer fun project may see the AAVCC have a mobile drive in theater evening at the Shrine Center so stay tuned for a future announcement. Be safe and enjoy your summer Frank Silliker President AAVCC

MEMBERSHIP REPORT Nobles, 2012 continues to be a great year for membership! Shrine International continues to support our efforts with marketing campaigns and internal membership support programs. We have many resources available to us on www.beashrinernow.com and www.shrinersvillage.com. If you have not logged in and are having problems please contact myself or the office. These sites have excellent materials that can be shown at your next lodge meeting. The membership committee will continue to visit lodges and various events throughout the summer months. We could put on a video presentation or small talk…interested? Contact us! This June is our first Membership Month. We will be out at various events hosted at Al Azhar, our video presentation center will also be up and running. There will be posters that you can download off of our website to put up at lodge and/or throughout your community. What other events would you like us out at? Airshows, community fairs/celebrations, rodeos… the list of possibilities is endless. If there is an event you think we should be at, let us know and please come join us! Why not wear your Fez to the next event you attend? Be proud to be a Shriner and tell them why this is important to you! We also have a new advertising vehicle, watch for more details on this exciting development! We still need mentors for our ‘Mentorship Plan.’ This would mean each new member being assigned a mentor to help them become involved and participate in our activities. Most new and non-active members want to be welcomed and included. This program needs mentors like you to call and invite other members out as well as introducing them to other Shriners. A quick phone call and welcoming handshake goes a long way to having more members at our events, as well as a stream of enthusiastic ideas to continue to grow Al Azhar and Shriners International! If you are interested in being a mentor, please contact us through the office or Divan! ‘People are never motivated by what you do; they are motivated by why you do it! We drive in parades, ride horses, clown around, share meals and travel together. The most important part is your why; for the kids, friends, experiences, mentors, social intercourse…whatever your why is will inspire others to action. Share your stories and see our numbers grow to epic proportions!

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Tori Capper and I am Miss Alberta Job’s Daughter 2012/13.

I have been asked many times.... So what is Job’s Daughters?

Many Masons may not know that an organization exists within the Masonic family that is especially for young women between the ages of ten and twenty. This is Job’s Daughters International.

They may not know that to become a member of Job’s Daughters, a girl must be related to a Freemason. Her father, stepfather, adoptive father, a grandfather or great grandfather, uncle, grand uncle or brother must be a member in good standing in a Masonic Lodge or have been a member in good standing at the time of his passing.

They may not know that our girls are proud of their heritage and their membership in the

Masonic family; that they regard all Freemasons with respect and that Masons are most welcome at all Job’s Daughter meetings. Job’s Daughters run their own meetings and engage in fund raising projects to support their Bethel and the activities in which they take part, just as Masons do.

It may not be known that each girl owns a ritual and is responsible for memory work; that the Bible is open during our meetings; that we honor our country’s flag and that charity and benevolence to those less fortunate is part of our creed. We support our official charity HIKE which helps children with mild to severe hearing loss.

Our Membership is now at the lowest since we began over 60 years ago. Now more than ever we need the assistance of the Masonic Lodges to help our order grow. Now more than ever today’s youth need an organization like Job’s Daughters. People skills such as communication and working within groups are no longer taught directly in the schools but remain important life lessons for future success and Job’s Daughters can provide those lessons.

We would be happy to receive the names of your daughters, granddaughters, nieces or other young female relatives. We know they will benefit from membership in Job’s Daughters and in turn greatly help this branch of the Masonic family tree to grow.

For more information please contact myself at [email protected] or our Grand Guardian Kelly de Jong [email protected] .

PROVOST CORPS May is a great month. It starts off looking like winter, ends up looking like summer with all the trees in leaf and the flowers in bloom. Coincidentally, it is also the start of our parade season! The Provost Corps had its first move-out of the year at the High River parade on the May long weekend, complete

with our fleet of Quads. Getting them started again after a long winter’s break turned out not to be too difficult thanks to the prep work that was done in the fall, they survived the winter well and were able to get four of them running for the parade. To the left our Quad master, Chuck Allott, is hard at work boosting the quads from his truck, as it appears the batteries don’t last longer than five minutes! Once started, however, they are reliable as long as they are kept running, but if they stall along the parade route we have to boost them again to get started, so he carries an extra battery on the back of his quad for this purpose. I also discovered that you can start them on the move,

while I was being towed by Peter Fisher of the Tin Lizzie Corps. (Thanks Peter!) In most parades they have not stalled on us, however there is always a first time for everything… This year the Provost Corps will be participating in either Okotoks or Crossfield (yet to be decided), Airdrie, the Stampede Parade (unfortunately without our toys and on foot), also Medicine Hat, Strathmore, Nanton, Didsbury, and Cochrane in the fall. We look forward to seeing you along the parade routes this summer, our Captain, Laurie Dirks, (at right) is raring to go! Respectfully, Noble Martin Alcock Second Lieutenant

DIRECTORS STAFF Greetings Nobles! This has been a great Spring for the Directors Staff! Our unit building has been organized and shelves are being installed, thanks to all the members for coming out to our clean up meeting! Another recent event was our first joint BBQ dinner with the Provost Corps held on May 24th. Steaks, amazing salads/sides and dessert with the two units coming together for a bit of fellowship! This was to celebrate the Casino we had in early January of this year. The Directors staff was happy to have the assistance of the Provost Corps! I’ve heard rumor of a corn roast in the fall with these two units heading up the event. Perhaps more units would like to join us? Please let us know and we will keep the Shrine Center up to date as to our plans! The Directors Staff will be out parading this summer and look forward to many fun days in the sun. Our next meeting will be in September and we would like you to join us! The 2nd section needs your creative input, you can help make a new Noble's ceremonial a memorable experience that they will not soon forget! Remember your 2nd section? I still remember mine… Be a part of a new Noble’s memories of the day they became a Shriner! I look forward to seeing you all on the parade route this summer and at our various functions this year. Your continued support of Al Azhar’s events will allow our legacy in Southern Alberta to grow and thrive!

Working for Al Azhar and having fun,

Kurtis Frederick Director 2012

DID YOU KNOW?

Some of our newer members may not be aware of the history of Al Azhar. As with the many other Shrine Centres our name is Arabic and means “The Most Flourishing”. We received our Dispensation October 14, 1907 and their Charter on July 15, 1908.

Al Azhar is also one of the oldest operating Universities in the world – located in Cairo Egypt. (pictured below)
