talked about the ques1onnaires we developed to

screen candidates who apply to work with EJ.

Listed below are the ques1ons we asked on a recent

job applica1on for a web designer.

These will not be appropriate for every posi1on you try to fill, but will give

you an idea of the kind of things you should ask and how to tailor ques1ons

to the posi1on.

The aim is to get as much informa1on about the applicant as possible before

you invite them to interview or test for the role.

We present these ques1ons to poten1al candidates in the form of an online

ques1onnaire using Google Forms. To see the finished product, check out the

Ask the applicant to look at your website and tell you how they would improve something. Depending on the role it could relate to social media engagement, customer support, graphic design etc. This lets them demonstrate how well they know their cra5.

and errors).

If you’re hiring a virtual worker you will communicate with mostly via text then typing speed and accuracy are important. If a candidate sends you a scorecard full of errors, they might be a B-player. An A-player will take the test over and over again unAl they only have 1 or no mistakes.

Asking them about the best job they’ve ever had gives you some insight into what the applicant is looking for in a role and employer. Understanding what they value and enjoy will help you idenAfy what moAvates them to excel.

30. Describe your home office technology and set up. How easy is it for

you to work undistracted?

31. Imagine you're working on a project and the deadline is tomorrow

morning. Suddenly your computer crashes and is unrecoverable. The

work must be done today. What do you do?

33. How many hours are you available to work each week?

34. Is your computer Mac or Windows?

A virtual team member needs to have a good handle on technology. Asking how they would handle a computer crisis gives you an idea of their common sense, tech skill, logic and ability to solve problems. You would be surprised how diverse the responses can be to this quesAon!

37. Are you happy to complete some paid test jobs to start with so we can

see how you work?

38. What do you get up to when you're not working?

39. What song best describes your work ethic?

40. What is the last book you read?

41. Provide the name, posi1on and email address for TWO professional

references.

42. Is there anything else I should know about you?

Ask someone to describe their work ethic in words and they’ll give you all the right adjecAves (whether they’re true or not!) A song is a much more personal expression of how they approach their work and will give you far greater insight than a bunch of clichés.
