This short course was developed as a resource material for the trainer in thenon-formal sector especially for women, men and youth. The course developedis demand oriented and aims to provide opportunities for participants to acquirerelevant knowledge and skills in quilting and to be able to increase to a levelwere low-income earners can be able to make at home or for sale.

Module Purpose: The purpose of the module is to impart knowledge and skills toparticipants in assembling a nine patch variation quilt.
Nominal duration: Approximately 7 hours to complete the module.
Prerequisites: There are no pre-requisite for this module.

Suggested delivery method: The short course will be delivered in a practical, hands-on manner.1. Explanation (what we will do) 5%
2. Demonstration (how we will do it) 15%
3. Implementation (now you do it) 70%
4. Evaluation (how good did we do it) 10%
Instructor: A recognized trainer from a vocational centre or certified trainer whohas sewing skills .
Assessment method: The assessment will be given in a holistic manner through;
• Self paced
• Practical demonstration
• Observation
• Checklist
Assessment condition: In a kitchen situation where all materials and equipment are providedor training hall for women’s normal activities are done.
Evaluation: The participants will demonstrate mastery of each skill.The final product will be evaluated.

APPENDIX 4:
INTRODUCTIONThis is a very simple quilt that alternates NinePatch Variation blocks, and solid blocks of thesame size. It is simple, yet makes a very strikingquilt.So those friends who would love to go into quiltbusiness this is a good simple block for you startoff and go into a quilting business.
INSTRUCTIONAL NOTES:
MAKING NINE PATCH VARIATION QUILT
• Sewing machine• Rotary cutter or scissors• Tacking pins• Pin cushion• See thru ruler• Iron and ironing board• Template materials• Colour 1 – 2 metres plain fabric• Colour 2 – 2 metres floral fabric• Colour 3 – 2 metres plain fabric
1. Colour 1 needs: one 4 - 1/2“x 13 - 1/2”strip AND one 1 - 7/8” x 5 - 5/8” strip.
2. Colour 2 needs: one 4 - 1/2“x 9” stripAND one 1 - 7/8” x 5 - 5/8” strip.
3. Colour 3 needs: one 4 - 1/2” x 13 - 1/2”strip AND one 1 - 7/8” x 5 - 5/8” strip.
• First stack the 1 7/8” strips, and cut togetherwith a rotary cutter or scissors into 3, 17/8”squares.
• Then, stack the 41/2“ squares.
• Using a scant 1/4” seam piece the smallsquares in the order shown.
• Press seams towards darker fabrics. You mayneed to trim this back a tad to be 41/2“.

• Then, piece the larger squares in the ordershown, again using scant, pieces _“ seams,and pressing these seams towards the darkerfabric and the end result will be your NinePatch Variation Block.

Safety RulesSafety is very important in Sewing. To make surethat everyone can learn and have fun in a safeenvironment, keep the following rules in mind:1. ALWAYS: Place your coats, books and bags in
separate places, away from your sewing area.2. ALWAYS: Leave your shoes on during sewing
class. You do not want to accidentally step ona pin or needle.
3. ALWAYS: Keep your fingers away from thesewing machine needle when winding thebobbin and operating the machine.
4. ALWAYS: Look under your fabric beforecutting with scissors and carry scissors withthe sharp edge pointing towards the floor.When the scissors are not being used, placethem on the cutting table, sewing table, or inyour sewing box.
5. ALWAYS: Thread the needle with caution andlower the pressure foot before starting tosewing on your fabric.
6. ALWAYS: Remove the pins from your fabricas you sew and place them in the pin cushionafter you use them. NEVER put straight pinsor needles in your mouth.
7. ALWAYS: Place the iron in the uprightposition after use. When using the iron holdit by the handle only.
8. ALWAYS: Let your teacher/trainer help youuse the seam ripper (unpicker).
9. ALWAYS: Place your seam gauge, ruler,scissors and pins in the sewing box afterusing them.
10. ALWAYS: Listen to the teacher’s/trainer’sinstructions.

Words MeaningsBacking This is the bottom layer of the
quilt.Made up of a single piece orpieced together.
Baste A way of securing the layers ofyour quilt using large loosestitches.You can also baste with safetypins.
Binding A narrow strip of fabric used tofinish off the raw edges of a quilt.
Border Fabric strips that go around theoutside of a quilt.Can be pieced, plain or appliquéd.
Grain
Mitered Corner
Sashing Strips of fabric used to separateblocks in a quilt top.
Color Wheel Primary colors, red, blue andyellow.Secondary colors are green,purple and orange.
1/4” Seam Seam allowances is: a 1/4 inchAllowance margin from the edge of the
fabric.
Batting The middle layer of your quilt.Comes in different thickness, size,and fibers.
