PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

GROWING WITH THE COMMUNITY

We are here to support the academic, social and emotional development of our students to be resilient

to the challenges of a rapidly changing society.

SPECIAL THANKS

Each term there are a number of special events that would not have been possible without terrific organisation and generosity of time and resources of staff, students and families. Each time we hold a special event or seek assistance we are reminded of how unique our CPS community is. 1. Our staffroom was a hive of industry last week,

organising a splendid fare of delicious goodies to sell at the Carnegie Street Festival that was held on Saturday 24th November. Thank you to Selina O’Sullivan and our PFA for organising the cake and gingerbread making classes over recent weeks. We would like to extend our thanks to all of our mums and dads who baked, decorated and wrapped in preparation for this stall. Thanks also to those who so generously donated their time to man the stalls and do the selling on the day. I’m sure many locals will enjoy their delicious purchases.

2. Our 2013 Prep Orientation program concluded last Friday. Mrs Oosterbaan, Mrs Thompson and many staff, along with our students, particularly in the senior school, did a sterling job to ensure all went smoothly. Special thanks needs to go to our PFA helpers and our uniform shop volunteers for giving so generously of their time – Sharon Marasco (Stella’s mum) and Rosalie Ouslinis (Alex’s mum).

3. This term many classes have asked for volunteers to assist with classroom activities, incursions and excursions. Thanks to those who have been able to share this part of their child’s learning.

PARENT HELPERS MORNING TEA – Wednesday 11th December We wish to invite all our wonderful 2012 helpers to a small morning tea at 11am on Wednesday 11th December. As in previous years we will be holding this event in the hall. We know it is becoming a busy time of the year but we hope many of our helpers are able to join us. It is our teachers’ opportunity to say thanks and provide some delicious food for you all. END OF YEAR FAMILY PICNIC – Tuesday 18th December Our End of Year Picnic and Concert is on Tuesday 18th December under the trees between our portable buildings. The evening will begin at 5pm with the PFA sausage sizzle. It will be a laid back evening with the children performing in whole grade levels to ensure the concert is short and sweet. The children are preparing their items in their Arts lessons with Ms Bolger. We look forward to seeing all our families at what is now a time-honoured celebration of the school year. We have ordered a balmy evening to make it even more special. REFLECTING ON 2012 Thank you to those families who have chosen to give your feedback via the form sent home with our last newsletter. Your positive feedback is much appreciated and it is heartening to know that in most instances we work together in a positive partnership ensuring the best outcomes for our students. The areas for improvement are well considered and will be reflected on when making plans for 2013. Please remember that Michael and I have many calls on our time but we can al-ways make time to meet with parents, formally and informally, either in person, via a phone call or the school email.

WORDS OF WISDOM – What we think, say and do will come back to us

somehow, sometime Linda Jones & Michael McCarthy

4. Thanks in advance to those of you who are able to attend the Portfolio sharing session scheduled for this Thursday, 6th December, from 3 till 4pm. I know the children get a buzz out of sharing some of their work and thoughts about their learning on these occasions.

WORKING BEE Thanks once again to our willing band of helpers who appeared on Saturday morning. We did lots of tidying, cleaning, planting, fixing and moving and storing to be better prepared for the end of the year and for next year. STAFF NEWS We have just a few staff movements in 2013 which we wish to announce to the community. Elise Shanley (Grade 1) will be taking twelve months leave to return to the family business in country Victoria. She will be greatly missed and we cross our fingers she might return sometime soon. Melinda Gledhill (Grade 3) has completed her six month contract and will return to relief teacher duties. We thank Mel for her great con-tribution. We will happily welcome back Kate Lawerson next year after twelve months travelling the world. We will also welcome back Amanda Dowsett in a part-time role as she returns from maternity leave. We are currently finalising grade placements for students and teachers and will let you know those details during the last week of school. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION We have had further queries about Religious Education in the past week. As with all government schools, we are bound by an act of Parliament to offer an RE program if qualified religious groups request a forum. Access Ministries is the Education Department nominated group who provide and oversee instruction in an Agreed Syllabus which is a Christian education. CPS also offers a Roman Catholic syllabus, a Jewish syllabus and a Greek Orthodox syllabus. Parents need to request their child be excused from attending RE if they wish them to be withrdrawn. GUITAR CONCERT Just informing the community that our guitar students who learn with Stephan will be putting on a musical extravaganza tonight at 7pm. I’m sure many parents, friends and siblings will be in attendance but all would be welcome. Good luck, everyone. We are looking forward to it. PUBLICATION No. 19—04/12/2012

CHRISTMAS CAKE STALL WRAP UP On Saturday 24th November we had our annual Christmas cake stall at the

Koornang Rd Street Festival. The weather was fantastic after having to deal with

rain and wind over the past few years. The profit for the day was just over $2,000,

which was a wonderful result. Thank-you to everyone who donated a cake or a

gingerbread house or both! Thank-you to all those people who wrapped the

items and to those who helped set up, pack up and man the stall. A big thank-

you must go to Selina O’Sullivan for organising all the baking sessions and the stall

on the day—you’re a gem!

LAST PFA MEETING- Next Wednesday 12th Dec As tradition dictates, our last meeting for the year will be held at the Rosstown

Hotel at 7.30pm on Wednesday 12th December (please note not the normal

Tuesday night). We will celebrate a successful year of fundraising and social

events. I look forward to seeing you there!

END OF YEAR PICNIC – TUESDAY 18th DECEMBER The PFA run a sausage sizzle and sell cans of soft drink on the night of the End of

Year Picnic. We traditionally ask some of the dads to help out with the cooking

of the snags and serving. If you would like to help on the night please contact

me on the details below. Thank-you!

CHRISTMAS TREE REMINDER For those who ordered Christmas trees last week, they will be at school this Friday

between 3pm and 5.30pm for pick up. Please remember to bring along the slip

from the bottom of the form.
