2The Portraits of DC are more than just faces on paper. Its about the authentic canvas of the New 202 through the lens of the people of DC themselves. Every person has a story and this initiative is an attempt to capture the evolving diversity of DC and reinforce the importance of the 2010 Census count. Our community has such a unique history that is unparalleled by any other place in the world. We have come from every place on the map and every strata of socio-economic spectrum. The Portraits of DC is our attempt to capture that character in the first decade of the new millennium. The photo contest drew hundreds of portrait submissions from all corners of the District, at all skill levels. Submissions ranged from a renowned photographer such as Jim Darling to an entry level youth who loves photography. The images captured were a refreshing look at DC youth, recently naturalized citizens, artists, elders and uniformed police officers. Photos were selected by the judging panel not only according to the quality of the photo, but also the context of the subject of the photo. The 51 winners will be exhibited as a collection in places such as Social, a Columbia Heights restaurant, the Washington Convention Center and several other public venues.
Building on the true nature of our community, we have created public, private and community partnerships to foster growth in DC. The DC Counts Campaign, the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, FotoWeek DC, Social and the residents of DC are proud of this project.
We hope that you will join us in celebration of the artists that have shared these 51 faces on April 27th at Social, 1400 Meridian Place, NW, www.social14.com. Thank you very much!!!
