PRESIDENT’S REPORT I find it difficult to come to grips with the fact that this is my tenth Annual Report, but I say this in the realisation that we continue to make substantial changes for the benefit of our great club. As far as the 2014 season goes, we were very competitive, but somewhat disappointing, when it seemed our seniors would wrap up the second semi against Williamstown, only to be overrun in the final quarter. The Development side went down to Port Melbourne in the Elimination Final. Nevertheless, the endeavour of all players was excellent and on reflection we were very proud of our boys. Footscray won a high standard V.F.L Grand Final at Etihad Stadium in front of a crowd of 23,000. Congratulations to Footscray on their magnificent win. Whilst on the 2014 season, John Lamont - our newly appointed coach and his team of coaches’ assistants and volunteers - did us proud in their efforts to ensure we had an effective year. I am sure John can review 2014 in a positive perspective and knowing John, I am sure he will be even more determined to succeed in the season upon us. Congratulations to all who were recognised at our Presentation Night, particularly Best and Fairest winners in the seniors and the Development side, namely Jarred Moore and Billy Iles respectively. Our partial alignment with the North Melbourne Football Club was again very productive and rewarding. During this season, North Melbourne sought a variation to this arrangement from the end of the 2015 season. What has been decided is that a full alignment between Werribee Tigers and North Melbourne will be in operation for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, with options beyond this. We continue to work with Wyndham City Council and A.F.L Victoria to finalise the design and scope of the upgrading of facilities at Avalon Airport Oval. At this time it is anticipated that this work will be undertaken during 2016, and as a consequence, the W.F.C will need to plan carefully for the alternative playing and training requirements. We are very grateful to the Wyndham City Council and its staff for the near six million dollars they have committed for the project and to the AFL and AFL Victoria for the half a million they have promised. Our contribution is proposed to be one million dollars. Careful consideration is currently underway regarding the final scope of works. We are hopeful that we may be able to attract a state government contribution of one point five million dollars to enable a more well-rounded product to be delivered at the end of the day. We continue to have a special relationship with the directors at the Tigers Clubhouse, their General Manager – Rhys New – and his staff. An upgrade costing more than half a million dollars was undertaken during the year with as little disruption as possible. This work has significantly improved the ambience of the club. Much time and effort is directed to the Clubhouse and special mention needs to be made of that effort by Vice President Martin Carter and our C.E.O Mark Penaluna. Thank you gentlemen. 2014 was, of course, our 50th year as the Werribee Football Club, which was formed in 1964 and played in the V.F.A in 1965. Among the highlights was our 50 year celebration at our inaugural Hall of Fame Dinner. On this night we welcomed Kerryn O’Brien, Eddie Marriott and John Comben to join our living Hall of Fame Legends Bruce Montgomery, David Lyons and Greg Anderson. Unfortunately, two of our Legends are no longer with us, but they are certainly in our memories. They are Ray Smith and Len Ryan. These Legends were joined by twenty six inductees into the inaugural Hall of Fame.

7

Our 50th Anniversary was a tremendous celebration worthy of such a significant milestone in our history. Special thanks to Darren Hellmann and his organising committee on a wonderful job. Life membership is a special honour and this year we have acknowledged the contribution to our club of 8 individuals. Congratulations to Ben Warren, John Pavlidis, Martin Carter, Sam Wormald, Anthony Eames, Stephen Sells, Paul Satterley, Michael Frost and Scott Bishop. We still have a strong and helpful association with our Patron Julia Gillard, who was the 27th Prime Minister of Australia. Our thanks are due to Julia for her promotion of our club and her advocacy on our behalf. We are also indebted to our joint Number One Ticket Holders, Merv Hughes and Russell Mark, for their continued support. Year after year I look for superlatives to describe our CEO Mark Penaluna’s efforts. As usual, they were absolutely outstanding, so I have simply decided just to say thank you so much, Mark. The CEO is very actively and loyally supported by our Operations Manager Stuart Balloch, Community Development Officer Chris Gallagher and his team and Sharon Robinson, our Office Manager. The club and its members and supporters thank these people very sincerely for their dedicated contribution to the continuing success of our club. Our staff - including Coach John Lamont - are assisted by large numbers of part time staff and volunteers. We thank them and look forward to their ongoing contributions. As for years past, once again in this Annual Report I must pay special thanks to our Media Manager Kevin Hillier. As I have mentioned many times before, we are so fortunate to have Kevin, and all his very special skills. Thank you Kevin. He also is the author of “The Book,” which will be an authoritative record of our first 50 years. This publication will be available in the 2015 season. We hope and trust it will adorn the book shelves of our members and supporters. Our sponsors are so very vital to the fabric of our football club that mere words do not seem sufficient. We say a sincere thanks to them, not only for their financial support, but for their personal commitment to the club. This is particularly true of our major sponsor Ballan Holden, who not only commits financially, but is always represented by Tino and Robyn Ballan and family - great people, outstanding supporters of the Werribee Football Club. I must also gratefully acknowledge the board members of the Werribee Football Club. Their commitment and dedication is quite outstanding, and the heartfelt thanks of the club must be recorded here in the Annual Report. We were sorry that during the year two members of the board resigned. They were Mick Doyle and Chris Kopelke. We thank them for their service and wish them well for the future. Finally, our thanks to the Wyndham City Council for their continuing input and support of our needs. Thanks to our co-tenants at Avalon Airport Oval – the Werribee Cricket Club – with whom we have a wonderful relationship, and to whom we wish every success for the future. To our Senior Coach John Lamont, his support team and the 2015 playing group – we wish you all the very best for the coming season and the years ahead. As I concluded last year - and nothing has changed - we are a family club, so let us enjoy our club and support the club with your presence and your enthusiastic commitment. I thank all who are committed supporters of the Werribee Tigers and I ask that whilst there are changes ahead, we need all members and supporters one hundred percent committed at all levels. Then we can share in the success which your board believes will follow.

CEO’S REPORT At the conclusion of each season I always enjoy the opportunity to pause and reflect, asking questions such as “Have we achieved our personal and club aims? What challenges are ahead of us?” For myself, the end of the 2014 season is somewhat special, given that we have just completed our 50th year. Apart from the above questions, I feel we should be asking “Would the club founders approve of the current position and status of our club?” I believe the answer to that question would be a resounding YES! I doubt that anyone from that era would have contemplated that the Werribee Football Club would be successfully competing against AFL clubs like Essendon, Collingwood and Geelong in 2014. They would not have dreamed that we would have a healthy bank balance, facilities that continue to improve yearly, night matches at home, a full time Senior Coach, a Community Manager and AFL recruiters attending our games - the list goes on. The evolution of our club was well documented in an impressive DVD created and presented by our Media Manager Kevin Hillier at our Hall of Fame Function. We have gone from a battling VFA Division 2 club to one that is revered and respected in the broader football industry. You can see it on our website YouTube wall. This function was an extraordinarily successful event, managed by a hard working committee led by Darren Hellmann, Greg Welsh, David Lyons, John McCarthy, Mick Doyle and Ivo Havard. I sincerely hope that this can be the catalyst for our Life Members and long time supporters to attend and participate in many more club activities. Well done to all that were awarded the honour of becoming inductees in our Hall of Fame. There were many other achievements in 2014 that we should feel very proud to include:

Another successful football season with both our Seniors and Development teams playing in finals. Our senior team finishing in the top third of the competition every year for the past four years. A proud achievement, but I can assure everybody, that we will continue to strive for the ultimate success.

A financial profit for the 11th straight year. In spite of the fact that the State Government amended the Gaming Tax and we are required to pay an additional (approximately 260k pa) as from May 2014

Naming of our Medical Rooms in honour of Dr Greg Anderson and Statisticians Room after Julie & John McCarthy

Obtaining funding from Wyndham Council /AFL /AFL Victoria totalling in excess of 6 million dollars for the redevelopment of Avalon Airport Oval.

Our Capital Works program continued with the installation of 3 new ice baths and behind the goals camera

The VFL umpires voted us the 2nd best conducted club and VFL clubs the 2nd most preferred venue for VFL finals

The appointment of a full time Multicultural Officer in Majok ‘Shaggy’ Ngong

Completion of our Wyndham Sporting Opportunities Project

Re-branding of the Werribee Sports Club to Chirnside’s by the River

Attracting new sponsors like Harpley (Lend Lease) and Pacific Werribee

A half million dollar refurbishment of our social venue – The Tigers Clubhouse

The extension of our AFL Partnership with the North Melbourne Football Club into a full alignment in 2016/17.

There are many other people that I must thank for their efforts: John Nicol, for your tireless leadership, as well as, the entire WFC Board

WFC staff – Stuart Balloch, John Lamont, Kevin Hillier, Sharon Robinson, Chris Gallagher, Majok Nagong, Janelle Allan – thanks for your wonderful contribution

All club volunteers, football staff, coaches, players and sponsors.

Congratulations to Jarrod Moore on winning his 2nd consecutive Bruce Montgomery Trophy

Congratulations to Billy Iles on winning the Development Team Best & Fairest

Congratulations to – Martin Carter, John Pavlidis, Scott Bishop, Sam Wormald, Ben Warren, Stephen Sells, Anthony Eames, Paul Satterley and Michael Frost for Life Membership to our great club.

Congratulations to Darren Hellmann on being the Ray Smith Best Club Person

Congratulations to all award winners

Lastly, a very special thanks to our exiting club legend Greg ‘Doc’ Anderson. Thanks Greg for your efforts to our club, they have been extraordinary

As highlighted earlier, our competition has altered dramatically over our initial 50 years, and in particular since the AFL clubs have become active participants. The challenge for our football club is how we maintain and improve our standard, in particular from an on field basis. The introduction of Essendon, Western Bulldogs and Williamstown as standalone clubs over the past two years has made recruiting players much more difficult. Player payments at local club level have increased, making retention even more difficult. This means we must work harder in areas such as finding players suitable employment, in order to make our club more attractive as a whole package. The hallmark of the Werribee Football Club is that club spirit born 50 years ago, which is stronger than ever today. We must strive for increased membership and match day attendees In my mind, the greatest opportunity presented to our club since its creation is the potential redevelopment of Avalon Airport Oval. We will be required to contribute at least one to 1.5 million towards this project, obviously a substantial amount of money. To assist with our fundraising efforts, we have registered this with the Australian Sports Foundation. This means individuals and businesses are able to contribute to this program (i.e - sponsor a new locker, new medical room, deductions of staff wages) and claim this as a tax deduction. The proposed improvements would ensure that the Werribee Football Club is in the top echelon of VFL clubs with:

- Gymnasium size increase of more than double

- Dedicated Media Broadcast Box

- New offices

- Player rehabilitation facilities

- New canteen, bar, social room and much more

As a club we have worked very hard for this to become a reality. Let’s all stick together and see it over the line.

I am genuinely excited about the future of the Werribee Football Club. Mark Penaluna

MEDIA REPORT 2015 Media Annual Report The media landscape for clubs like ours is ever changing, as supporters, sponsors and the general public demand more information - delivered quicker and better - and that it be more interactive. The challenge is to meet these needs but with a lot less manpower than at the elite level, exactly the same scenario facing the football department. Social Media This is now the best tool we have to be connect with our loyal supporters and those who passively follow the fortunes of the club. Facebook/Twitter/Instagram and whatever might follow soon, is the most instant contact we have with those inside and outside the club. Numbers of followers for all of these have increased significantly throughout the year and continue to do so. Dom Favata made a valuable contribution to this area during the season - especially on match days - and Alex Jovanovski has looked after it since the season finished. We need to continue to assign resources to this area because it will be critical in the club maintaining a visible profile in an increasingly competitive marketplace. There is also enormous scope for sponsorship to be derived from this area to open a new revenue stream for the club. Newspapers/Print The local newspaper is alive and well. We have two newspapers now in the west (Leader and Star Weekly). We have a good relationship with both and coverage of our games and news is equally as important to their credibility as it is to ours. We continue to explore any opportunity that arises with football publications like SEN Inside Football and the AFL Victoria Record and the WRFL Footy Record. The Geelong Addy also carried a number of Werribee stories. Radio The radio hour “Footy in the West” on WYN FM from 5 to 6pm on Fridays during the season went well. Steve Thom joined me every Friday to talk about our games and the cooperation of our coaches and players was sensational, especially John Lamont. John was never a boring guest and his insight and willingness to be open was a breath of fresh air. We received great support from K-Rock with both Tom King and Brad Green interviewing our players and coaches for their website and for on air programming. Website The new website looks better, but we have had our share of problems in the day to day operations of it. I am handing the physical running of the site to someone else this year, but I will be still be writing and editing the content. We need to concentrate on new content more often and we need to embrace more audio visual content to keep up with the competition. Events The Hall of Fame Night set a very high benchmark for the club for future major events. Thanks to Darren Hellmann and his committee we staged a night that will be long remembered for all the right reasons. The atmosphere was superb, the feeling in the room was electric, and the presentation was very emotive, classy and memorable. I was very proud to be part of the night and I think everyone involved can take a bow. History I wrote last year that the book was a bigger assignment that I had anticipated, and it has turned out to be even bigger. It will be published this year and I hope embraced by everyone at the cub. Summation I love being involved with the Werribee Football Club and as I head into my 12th year with the club, I am as enthusiastic as ever and optimistic about what we can achieve. My thanks to the President John Nicol and his board, Mark, Stu, Chris, Shaggy, Alex, Sharon and everyone in the office including Janelle, who has moved on. Amanda at Raspberry Bullet Design has also been a great help. John Lamont our Senior Coach has been a pleasure to work with and very user friendly for any media requests, which I appreciate. I am looking forward to 2015. GO TIGERS.

FOOTBALL OPERATIONS REPORT The culmination of the 2014 Football season at North Port Oval was extremely disappointing, being overrun by a spirited Williamstown in our Semi Final. Looking back at the achievements of our club, I can feel satisfied that the Werribee Football Club - in a partial alignment with North Melbourne - continued to be a competitive outfit in the VFL and Development League competition. The competition continued to change face with Coburg and Williamstown entering the 2014 season as standalone VFL entities, splitting with their AFL affiliates - the Bulldogs and Richmond - who fielded their own stand alone teams. We also lost a team from the Development League competition with North Ballarat not fielding a side, citing staffing and logistical issues. It was also not long into the season that Bendigo announced that the 2014 season will be its final one in the league. In 2014 we welcomed John Lamont into the role of Senior Coach, having spent the previous three seasons as the club’s conduit to the North Melbourne Football Club as a development coach. In late October 2013 he hit the ground running, bringing a huge work ethic and enthusiasm to our playing group. I would extend my congratulations to John on his successes in his first year as Senior Coach. I would like to identify the fantastic team of staff that put our side on the park every week. Our match days start early and finish late. Many sacrifice their weekends and their time to ensure that we continue to work towards the common goal of getting better and striving for excellence. Within that I would like to note and thank our volunteers, whose contribution is truly appreciated. We sadly parted ways with a number staff at the conclusion of season 2014. Development Coach Phil O’Keefe, Development back line Coach Nick Condos and Ruck Coach John Barnes have all stood down from their coaching roles. After a long eight seasons at the club, Strength and Conditioning Coach Doug Brown has left the club, along with his assistant Cam Micallef, who has moved onto to other opportunities. Our medical team will also look different as we work towards the 2015 season without the Legend and Hall of Famer Doc Greg Anderson, who is stepping down from his commitments as the club doctor after more than twenty years’ service. Club head physio Nathan Hickman has also moved onto other opportunities. So to all those that will be leaving us - thank you for your dedication and efforts across the journey. As our alignment continues to strengthen I would like to acknowledge and thank the North Melbourne Football Club for its ongoing support throughout 2014.Having the ability to access Arden Street for pre-season training - and the provision of and access to software and insights into the functioning of an AFL club - provides the ability for our club to continue to grow and improve our services to our playing group. So to Geoff Walsh, Mel Forge, Jarrod Moore Ben Dyer and Gavin Brown along with your staff at the NMFC, thanks and we look forward to continued success in 2015. It was also incredibly pleasing to see former Werribee players Luke McDonald and Ben Brown make their AFL debuts for NMFC in 2014 and lay a foundation for themselves as future AFL stars. I should also acknowledge and congratulate former Werribee player Ben Ross, who also made his debut at Hawthorn in 2014. Aside from the initial stumble and having our Round One game relocated from Chirnside Park due to an unsafe cricket table, we continue to foster positive working relationships with the Parks and Gardens and Recreation department at Wyndham City Council. The playing service in 2014 has been exceptional and thanks to the curator for his dedication to the maintenance and presentation of the facility for state league football. Finally, to the playing group: VFL football is a massive commitment and for your efforts across the season, we thank you. We need to continue to develop and show unity as we seek to improve on what was a positive season overall. Congratulations to all the award winners on their individual achievements and those that were honoured at the VFL presentation night.

SENIOR COACH’S REPORT Hello to everyone as we prepare for the 2015 season. As we look back on the 2014 season, there is much we can build on:

27 new players into the club and a new coaching group A very positive practice match phase where we won all four games Inconsistency in early games against Box Hill and Port Melbourne both away from

home. If we had held our nerve in these tough games early in the year it would have meant a stronger position on the ladder come season’s end

Really good wins against Sandringham and Geelong (away) and Richmond at home

A heart-breaking one point loss to Essendon Disappointing losses to Port Melbourne and Sandringham at home because we

had our chances to win those contests A successful season, winning more games than we lost Jye Bolton, Tom Gribble and Jarrod Moore making the VFL team of the year, Scott Sherlock representing

Victoria against the SANFL A young group of players returning with some resolve

But the end of the 2014 season, of course, was very much a bittersweet thing. Our Development squad reached the finals but was soundly defeated, and our senior team had a good win in the elimination final. Then, as we all remember, we had the disastrous last quarter in our Semi Final against Williamstown, where we conceded nine goals to post an embarrassing loss. The playing group came back into the club the following week and we reviewed both those games to ensure we learned from what was a tough experience, and an incredibly disappointing way for a football season to end. So with that comes a congratulatory message to the playing group: well done on your year together, but hopefully the majority of players have feelings of wanting to improve and get better, together. At the risk of missing people, thanks to Kirby Bohan and her team of trainers and support staff, impossible to manage the playing group without you. Leonie Shaw and Carina Galati thanks for your support to the players. How are we going to replace the pancake nights? To Hutchy, Ash and Dougie: thanks again for the endless tasks you perform to support the playing group and coaching staff. To Dylan Lake and his statistics team: thanks for your help, you all did a great job and we look forward to improving our stats team further for 2015. To the entire coaching group: thanks for all your efforts - training nights, on the phone, late match committee nights, long days at the footy. I have enjoyed our working “culture” and look forward to enhancing that further for 2015 and beyond. Phil “Shooter” O’Keefe and Nick “Rocky” Condos have moved on. Thanks for your efforts and good luck with future endeavours. When one footy season ends another one beckons with renewed enthusiasm, and we have jumped in boots and all for 2015. Unfortunately, however, a number of experienced players have moved on, with Ben Warren, Addam Maric, Trent Shinners, Jarrod Mather and Sam Wormald starting the next phase of their footballing careers. Thanks for your contribution to our club. Jarrod Moore, who has won our past two Best and Fairest awards, has decided to concentrate on his coaching career with Nth Melbourne, so we will still see “Bulldog” around the place, but not in his playing gear!

13

So with the loss of experience from our playing group, we can look forward to a younger team donning our guernsey this year, and we will be looking to take the opposition on with youthful exuberance. Pre-season has again been rewarding, with lots of new faces on and off the field. Long standing head of Strength and Conditioning Doug Brown has moved on to commit more time to family. Doug has done a great job over a long period and on behalf of past and current players and coaching staff, I want to acknowledge Doug’s great effort and commitment. With Strength Coach Cam Micallef moving on to Williamstown, we had a “blank canvas” in the S&C area, and now we welcome Loris Bertolocci and his Advanced Athletes Performance group that is going to manage the S&C for our club. This means Liam Annett and Andrew Kakoullis return, and we welcome Michael Benham. Doc Anderson has moved on from official duties but we hope to see him in the crowd supporting us. You have done a great job, Doc. Thanks for your enormous contribution. Nathan Hickman moves on to develop his career further. Thanks for your efforts Nathan. We welcome the Domain Health group and specifically Liam, Kim and Chris, who have made a really positive start. To Stuart Balloch who does an outstanding job as our Football Operations Manager and Mark Penaluna our hard working CEO, thanks for your great efforts and ongoing support to my role as coach and the bigger picture of the Football Department. Training has been well executed across three nights per week and the playing group also committed to two training camps at Portarlington and Torquay. We look forward to the 2015 season, and anticipate your ongoing support to our club and the playing group.

COMMUNITY REPORT

The Werribee Football Club continued to be the benchmark in community engagement within the VFL in 2014. The appointment of a full-time Multicultural Development Officer (Majok “Shaggy” Ngong) and a part-time Project Officer (Sam Mahoney & Michael Masseni) late in 2013 helped shape a successful and productive year for the Werribee Football Club community team, who worked collectively on a social inclusion project called the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities project. This project focused on the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities with a focal point on educating young people on the benefits of participating in sport and the different opportunities that can be gained from being involved. The community team coordinated numerous events and programs throughout the year that included:

Partner Program/Event Outline

Australian Sports Commission Active – After School Program

A number of players are trained coaches who deliver after school sports programs, run through

terms 1-4 The Wyndham City Council has always been a close partner of the club and 2014 has been no different. Player and staff involvement in Weerama Festival, Youth Festival, Multicultural Fiesta, Youth Resource Centres and Active Kids school program has always been a precedence of the club and we look forward to building on our relationship in years to come. The club’s relationship with its AFL partner North Melbourne Football Club (NMFC) has continued to strengthen within the Wyndham community through the delivery of the “huddle in schools” program, run by a combination of Werribee FC staff & players, NMFC staff and SEDA students. The program reaches out to over 2000 students across 18 schools within Wyndham, along with NMFC player appearances at Werribee FC home games and Wyndham schools and an annual school holiday Superclinic. Building strong connections with the local community has always been a major priority of the Werribee Football Club and our work could not be done without the support of community partners Bendigo Bank and Pacific Werribee. Thank you to Dino at Bendigo Bank and Jodi at Pacific Werribee for their ongoing support and I look forward to another exciting year in the Wyndham community.
