BISHOP OF STAFFORD‟S PASTORAL LETTER MARCH 2016

HE IS ALIVE!

I could easily leave it at that for really there is nothing else to say. In these

three words we have the essence of our Christian Faith. We believe HE IS

ALIVE! Or as St Paul expressed it: „if Christ has not been raised, then our

proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain… If Christ

has not been raised your faith is futile and you are still in your

sins.‟ (1 Cor 15: 14ff)

HE is Jesus. That he lived there is no doubt for even non – Christian historians of the time

verified it. Who „he‟ actually was is a matter of faith. A good person, a wise teacher,

a kind healer – but for Christians Jesus was God made man. That is really exciting

because it means that our Creator has actually lived and breathed and walked among

us. So God knows what it is like to be human. When I pray I pray to a God who

understands. When I fail and make a mess of things I can acknowledge this to a God

who understands. When I feel happy or sad, worried or care-free, popular or have a

sense that I am a failure and the whole world is against me, I know that God

understands. Through Jesus, God knows what it is like to be adored by the crowds

but also what it is like to be wrongly accused, let down by friends and suffer real

agony and the most barbaric death – yet rise from it all.

IS - The present tense. As a Christian I should not spend all my time looking backwards.

The past is only important in that it informs the present. I will have made many

mistakes in my life but because God understands I am offered forgiveness and the

opportunity to transform these mistakes into something good. So, resolved to turn

away from doing wrong and to try harder to be the kind of person I believe God wants

me to be and to really engage with the world that God has created and wants me to

enjoy, I can hold my head high in the present rather than wallow in the shame of the

past. God‟s love is not a past wish or even a future hope – it is a present reality.

ALIVE! Not dead. As a Christian I believe that Jesus came to life again on the first Easter

Sunday. The „how‟ is intriguing but for me not the main issue. What matters is that

through the Resurrection Jesus overcame the worst evil that can be perpetrated and

showed how God‟s love does conquer evil. This offers me hope for there is nothing

that I face in life that cannot be overcome and even death itself is not something of

which I should be afraid.

Pope Francis has written that it puzzles him why some Christians look like they are always going

through Lent rather than celebrating Easter! I agree with him – HE IS ALIVE! – our Faith should

be lively and a „dull‟ Christian be a contradiction in terms!

Recent research for the National Churches Trust suggested that a warm welcome with a smile

was one of the best and most effective ways of getting people into Church (they also said a

lavatory was important too!).

As Christians we have so much to smile about and I have to say that despite all the gloomy

predictions about our Church in England in the media, I for one feel very positive about the

future.

As I write we do not know whom God has called to be our new Diocesan Bishop but when that

person arrives I think that he or she will find a Diocese in good heart with a willingness to grow

and share the Gospel message. A Diocese that believes in the possibility of transformation – an

Easter Diocese that knows HE IS ALIVE!

I wish you an Easter full of joy! + Geoff

From the Vicar’s study

Dear All

When someone we love dies it is such a shock to the system

even if we have been expecting it! Being in shock it‟s hard to

function and make decisions. So it‟s very helpful to families if

the deceased has made their wishes known about what type of

funeral they want. Should there be a Christian service in church

or not? Which hymns might be suitable? Which bible reading will

best support the family or reflect the life of the deceased? Should there be a burial or a

cremation? Would it be good to have a eulogy or not? I always discuss these things with

every funeral family, but I am very happy to discuss these things with anyone planning their

own funeral as they approach death or even long before that point. Psychologically it‟s

healthy to prepare for our own death. It helps to make for a „good‟ death. Planning for our

funeral and the disposal of our remains is one way of doing that. It helps those who are

left behind.

In this issue of the „Barlaston Parish Church Gazette‟ I want to address some important

matters regarding the churchyard, so that ahead of time, everyone is clear about how things

stand.

First of all, to be buried in the churchyard of St John the Baptist, Barlaston, you must

either live in the parish, or die in the parish, or be on the electoral roll of that

church, or have a partner already buried there. Fresh graves are dug to double

depth so that there is room for a partner to be buried there also. The fee that is paid

through the Funeral Director to the church at the time of the burial is a one-off fee which

goes a little way towards the upkeep and maintenance of the churchyard. No-one owns

a plot. Rather the churchyard is held in trust by the Diocese of Lichfield and is maintained

by the Parochial Church Councils for the good of the whole community and not

individual families. In order to help that process, the Chancellor of Lichfield Diocese has

issued regulations that must be upheld by the Vicar and the Parochial Church Council.

When I was made Vicar of this parish, I had to promise the Bishop that I would adhere to

them.

Some people would like to have photographs, or toys, or ornaments on their loved one‟s

grave, while others are distressed by such things. We all have different tastes on the

subject, but the Chancellor‟s regulations are set to maintain our English country

churchyards as special, quiet places that blend into the countryside around

them. In order to maintain the whole churchyard in a tidy state, we need to be able to

cut the grass regularly, effectively and efficiently. Therefore, the only thing that the

Chancellor of the Diocese allows on a grave is a single headstone, which may incorporate

a flower vase. Christmas and anniversary wreaths and artificial flowers will be removed

periodically. No other objects are allowed.

For safety’s sake, chippings, kerbstones, plastic edging, vases, glass and china objects, toys,

windmills, photographs and poems are not allowed.

Cont…..

Some people argue that it‟s alright for them to place such objects on their loved one‟s

grave if they cut the grass and maintain the grave. However, the grass-cutter can‟t turn off

the mower when he comes to such a grave. To save on time and fuel he has to keep going,

and objects placed on a grave impede his progress. Many objects are a health and safety

hazard. For example, china and glass are at great risk of being broken. Lighter objects can

be blown around away from the grave. Only this year, immediately after a funeral, someone

nearly badly hurt themself because someone had left a china pot with bulbs on a grave. It

was a wake-up call to me, and I realised that because the rules are being broken, the

churchyard is not a safe place for people, and it needs to be! For that reason, we shall be

uplifting all objects extra to the headstone, incorporated vase and flowers.

To be bereaved is one of the most distressing things that can happen to us in this lifetime.

So by way of ministry to the bereaved, we hold a Memorial service twice a year – in May

and at the start of November. This service is for anyone in the community who would like

to especially remember and give thanks for a loved one who has died – whether it is

recently or in years gone by. We always send an invitation to any family for whom I have

conducted a funeral in the previous year, but if you would like us to invite you, do contact

the parish office and leave your name and address.

If you ever find yourself overwhelmed by grief, I am always happy to sit and listen and cry

with you, and pray for you and bless you.

With all good wishes and prayers from Your Vicar

Chorister Profile - Jean Finney

I'm Jean Finney and I sing in the alto section of the Choir.

I joined in the old Church to sing alongside our dear

friend, Joyce Dando, and I have been a member for about

34 years. I joined once our youngest daughter Ali reached

a readable age, so the 4 of us, Roy, myself, Joanne and Ali,

sang together as a family. I suppose we were like

Barlaston's answer to the Von Trapp family!

I have always enjoyed being part of the choir. Friendships made within the choir

tend to last a lifetime; even when members leave us and move away, we keep in

touch through phone calls and letters.

You will see me in the choir at Evensong on a

Sunday. I enjoy the traditional services, especially

the canticles and even the challenge of fitting in

the words of the psalm to the chant!

My favourite anthem that we have sung was

the one that we rehearsed in the temporary

church during the second half of 1984 and

performed at the Consecration Service of the

new Church on 17th November 1984 - Parry's " I was glad ". In those days, we

had a large choir and filled all 3 rows of the choir stalls and had to add chairs

on to the ends of the rows as well. This anthem is such a joy to sing, with it's

8 part harmony.

If you enjoy singing, why not come and join us? You don't need any previous

experience. We are a friendly group and always looking to increase our

numbers.

1. The Parish Council has identified several priorities for 2016 and have adjusted the

Annual Precept to ensure that this work can be progressed and completed in 2016.

There is a need to restore the stonework and joints on the war memorial on the

Green. It is considered important to conclude the work on the Neighbourhood Plan

and also to support the Village Show. This will be in conjunction with maintaining

regular activities.

2. Entry to the Best Kept Village competition will be made again in

2016 and hopefully further improvements can be made in any

untidy areas. Your help to keep your local area litter free and

attractive will help. Look out for the regular litter picks and

other planned activities in the spring. There will be a major

activity in support of the 'Clean for the Queen' initiative.

3. Parish Councillors are very aware of the issues that are currently

giving concern in the village. It is not within the Parish Council's power to directly

deal with these matters but pressure is continually being applied on the agencies

involved. For example:-

Representations are being made to the County Council Highways Department

The VIP Visitors Centre at JCB was a fantastic

WI trip. The area showing the story of JCB

was 1st class with the world‟s fastest diesel

car on show containing engines made by JCB.

We had a great time but the meal provided

was the icing on the cake.

This was such a popular event organised by

our Staffordshire Federation of WI office that

partners were also allowed to join in.

Our Speaker was by the Fire Service and our Fire Officer David Small showed

items which had become on fire and the story behind them. He promoted safe

homes using carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.

On Palm Sunday Christians celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into

Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection. For many Christian

churches, Palm Sunday, often referred to as "Passion Sunday," marks the

beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter Eve.

Palm Sunday in the Bible - The Triumphal Entry

Jesus travelled to Jerusalem knowing that this journey would end in his

sacrificial death on the cross for the sins of all humankind.

Before he entered the city, he sent two disciples ahead to the village of

Bethphage to look for an unbroken colt:

As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of

Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead

of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has

ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying

it?' say, 'The Lord needs it. ' " (Luke 19:29-31,

NIV)

The men brought the colt to Jesus, and

placed their cloaks on its back. As Jesus sat

on the young donkey he slowly made his

humble entrance into Jerusalem.

The people greeted Jesus enthusiastically,

waving palm branches and covering his path

with palm branches: cont…..

WHAT IS

Page 29: 50p MARCH 2016 Barlaston Parish Church Gazettestjohnsbarlaston.co.uk/docs/March 2016.pdf · Fresh fruit and veg, ... showed how God‟s love does conquer evil. ... In this issue of

St John the Baptist Parish Church Gazette, Barlaston 29

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that

followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the

Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"

(Matthew 21:9, NIV)

The shouts of "Hosanna" meant "save now," and

the palm branches symbolized goodness and

victory. Interestingly, at the end of the Bible,

people will wave palm branches once again to

praise and honour Jesus Christ:

After this I looked, and there before me was

a great multitude that no one could count, from

every nation, tribe, people and language,

standing before the throne and before the Lamb.

They were wearing white robes and were

holding palm branches in their hands.

(Revelation 7:9, NIV)

On Palm Sunday, the celebration quickly

spread throughout the whole city. People even

threw down their cloaks on the path where

Jesus rode as an act of homage and submission.

They recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah

from Zechariah 9:9:

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter

Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous

and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a

colt, the foal of a donkey. (NIV)

Immediately following this great time of

celebration in the ministry of Jesus, he began his

journey to the cross.

Barlaston Community Group – February 2016 update

This month has been taken up with planning and preparing for a couple of big events

coming up in March, namely The Clean for the Queen Weekend and the long-awaited

Pop-up Supper!

The Barlaston Womblers have registered their event

„Barlaston‟s Big Clean for the Queen‟ which will take

place over the weekend of 4th, 5th and 6th March.

All the anti-litter organisations, together with the

national charity Keep Britain Tidy, have come

together to support a UK wide anti-litter campaign

in the year of the Queen‟s 90th birthday. This will be

the biggest clean-up of the country ever, with the

ambition to get one million people collecting litter to give the Queen a green and

pleasant land for her birthday!

Keep Britain Tidy reports that more than 30 million tons of litter is collected from

streets in England every year, with local authorities spending an estimated one billion

pounds a year collecting up the mess. If you care about the growing menace that

affects our wildlife, streets, countryside and sense of pride, then please help by joining

The Barlaston Womblers at 10am on Saturday 5th March, meeting at the Barlaston

Village Hall. Littering and antisocial behaviour is EVERYBODY‟S responsibility!

For more information please visit

www.cleanforthequeen.co.uk or keep checking the

Barlaston Community Group‟s facebook page and

website where regular updates will be available.

The next event is the Pop-up Pie Night

which will be held on Good Friday (or

is it Good Pieday??) March 25th in the

Barlaston Village Hall. There will be a

selection of pies to choose from,

including a vegetarian option. Head

Chef Becky (of Blis Cakes) is already

experimenting with fillings and flavours

and a gourmet range will be selected

for your delectation…. A three course meal is planned for £10 per head – put the

date in your diaries now and look out for posters and information regarding the menu

on the website and Facebook page as usual. Come alone or book a table with friends,

we hope it will be a social occasion and an opportunity to meet with and chat to your

neighbours. Tickets will be on sale at Kitson‟s Chemist within the next couple of weeks

and numbers will be limited so book early!

The next film will be Dad‟s Army with an all-star cast

including Bill Nighy, Sir Tom Courtenay, Sir Michael

Gambon, Toby Jones and Catherine Zeta Jones. The

Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon has to deal

with a visiting female journalist and a German Spy as

World War II draws to its conclusion in this nostalgic

comedy. As it has only just gone on general release,

we are still awaiting dates for local showings – watch

this space.

Once again Girlguiding Stone Outward Division are producing their

show “A Handful of Songs”. This is a biennial show which was

started by Maureen Recine in the 1970‟s in Barlaston Village Hall.

As the number of Guides, Brownies and Young Leader/Rangers

increased it then went to Alleynes School Theatre. We are now at

the Rep at Stoke where we have been made to feel most welcome.

The girls come from the outlying villages of Stone, so we have

Barlaston, Aston & Little Stoke, Oulton, Tittensor and Yarnfield units

with some of the girls from Stone itself.

The show is a mixture of song, dance and sketches and features

Brownies as young as 7.

If you would like to see our show, it opens on 22nd March through

to 26th March with a matinee on the Saturday. Tickets are £9.50

adults and £8.50 concessions and these can be obtained from our

ticket secretary Mrs Brenda Tucker on 01785 760682, or

email [email protected].

You will be guaranteed a warm welcome, so come and support the

youth of the village.

We look forward to seeing you at the Rep.
