John Deere parallelogram design

To accommodate the large spray tank(and larger tractors), all 500 Seriessprayers feature a new, stronger frame. This John Deere design surrounds thetank with 120 x 80 x 5 mm thick tubularsteel. The lower link of the parallelogrambisects the tank in the centre, tying theframe, boom lift and tractor together asa single, rigid unit. You’ll appreciate thisinnovative design for its durability andstability if you spray on hillsides or inbumpy terrain.

4

FRAME

For years, tractor mounted sprayer

owners have requested a parallelo-

gram system similar to designs

that are found on trailed sprayers.

But it was never technically

possible because it would have

moved the centre of gravity too far

from the tractor. Until now.

Thanks to a completely new

frame and tank design, 500 Series

sprayers feature a slim and low

tank that improves both weight

distribution and stability. What’s

more, the centre of gravity stays

close to the tractor because the

width of the tank is not limited by

the lower parallelogram arms.

Benefits of parallelogram designinclude:

• All season long application (even intall crops like oilseed rape and corn)

• Ability to spray at lower heights toreduce drift (especially in pre-emerge applications)

• Less load and stress on frame

• Better boom ride and less yawing

• Better shock absorption on roughfields and high speed transport

offers unmatched strength and stability FRAME

The stronger frame allows faster fieldand transport speeds. In fact, you cantravel down the road at speeds up to 50 km/h (where allowed). And even inthose countries where such speeds aren’tyet allowed by law, you’ll appreciate therock solid base and narrow transportwidth – as slim as 2.55 m.

Hooking up a sprayer has never been simpler. Whether youchoose the optional quick coupling shaft or the standard auto-matic linkage with 3-point hitch triangle, one thing is certain:coupling a sprayer to the tractor is now safer, easier and quickerthan ever. The strong, triangular linkage is the same design you’ll

find on fertiliser spreaders. Note how the front of the sprayer isperfectly smooth and leans slightly away from the tractor.Together with the telescopic PTO shaft, this gives you ampleroom to attach the hydraulic hoses, electric cables and PTOshaft. So you won’t get dirty trying to wriggle yourself between

the tractor wheels and sprayer. A hook on the frame holds thePTO shaft when the sprayer is disconnected. Parking slots areavailable for all hoses and electric cables.

You’re spraying more thanchemicals on your field … you’respraying money. And John Deere

knows that the more accurate your

sprayer, the more money you’ll

save. Accurate spraying results in

higher yields and better quality

crops, not to mention the beneficial

aspects of judicious chemical use

on the environment.

That’s why you’ll find a long list

of chemical saving, high accuracy

features built into every 500 Series

sprayer.

How important is accuracy?

Please see the example (below).

As new, environmentally friendly

chemicals with lower amounts of

active ingredients are introduced,

precise distribution is paramount.

You can count on John Deere to

help make every drop count.

This typical example shows thateach square metre of your fieldreceives only 0.02 ml of activeingredient. And there are herbicidesavailable today with recommendeddosages as low as 10 grams perhectare, or .001 gram/m2! If yoursprayer accuracy is reduced only

slightly, fields won’t be treatedproperly, resulting in higherincidents of disease and wastedchemicals (and money). Justanother reason not to trust yourfields to anything less than a newJohn Deere 500 Series tractormounted sprayer.

This spray system is as Fill the sprayer quickly with the self-priming sprayer pump or with anexternal pump through a separatefilling connection with quick couplers. An optional electronic tank level controllets you set the desired filling level. Anaudible alarm sounds when the tankreaches the designated level. Filling ismore accurate and remnants areprevented. With the optional transferconnection, you can pump remainingsolutions (such as liquid fertiliser)easily back into a storage tank.

Easy, safe, quick filling of agro-chemicals. The large, 60 litre chemicalinductor swings out easily for quickaccess. Agrochemicals in variousformulations can be added to thereservoir from the ground and aredirectly mixed with clean water. Aninjector sucks the solution directly intothe basket strainer of the solution tankwithout passing through the pump.

The vessel cleaner removes every last drop of residue from chemicalcontainers. This can save money andreduce environmental concerns. Simplyplace the container over the rinse headand push it down to activate thecleaner.

SPRAY SYSTEM

The new central operatingsystem sets new standards forconvenience … while offering

more functionality than any other

tractor mounted sprayer.

This central bank on the left side

of the sprayer houses all the

solution valves, filters and options

you need to operate. This includes

solution valves, filters, chemical

inductor and filling and transfer

connections. Protective clothing

lockers and hand wash tank are

also conveniently located here.

Page 9: 508 – 5 1 – 512 - Farming UK1 Piston diaphragm pump 2 Filling hose with strainer and float 3 Filling hose connection ... 31 Tank pressure sensor for digital tank level indication

All major functions can be oper-ated with only two valves. You canfill the solution tank with water andchemicals, rinse chemical containers, engage or disengage agitation, rinseand clean the sprayer, inside and out.Clear, logical symbols make it easierto operate faster and with fewermistakes.

The hinged tank lid with large 400 mm diameter and basketstrainer provides ample room to addchemicals or inspect the tank. Theraised design prevents spillageduring transport.

Rotating nozzles inside the tankprovide a thorough cleaning of thetank in the field.

When filling is completed, washyour hands and protective clothingwith clean water from a separate 20 l hand wash tank and soap from ahandy dispenser. The handwash tankcan easily be removed to fill withclean water.

A huge, 185 litre rinse tank sitsunderneath the solution tank. Thisallows easy filling from ground level. The sprayer can be flushed withclean water, either with a full orempty tank. Thanks to the recircula-tion valve, the return flow of thepump to the tank can be redirectedto the suction side of the pump toprevent any return of rinse water intothe tank. So if you have to interruptspraying (e.g. because of rain) youcan flush the sprayer without dilutingthe tank solution and start again laterwith a clean sprayer.

Two storage lockers provide aconvenient place to stow protectiveclothing, as well as nozzles, filters orcleaning brushes. One locker can beused for contaminated equipment, the other for clean parts.

SPRAY SYSTEM

The new polyethylene tank isstrong, smooth and easy to clean. Two tunnels within the tank act asbaffle plates, preventing liquidfrom sloshing around during trans-port or in bumpy fields, enhancingstability. Tank walls are 8 mmthick, ensuring durability andstrength. Its steep profile and deepsump boost spraying performanceon steep slopes (up to 30 percent)and allow the tank to be emptiedcompletely.

The wet system has both ahigh pressure and low pressurecircuit and the primary pressureregulator ensures that a high pres-sure is always available for thehydro injectors for tank agitation.Thorough, powerful agitationensures a homogeneous sprayingsolution, even when spraying atlow pressures (to reduce drift, forinstance).

Agitation can be switched offmanually or electrically (optional)from the cab to prevent foamingwith some chemicals and to allowcomplete emptying of the tank. With the GreenStar Controller (seepages 16 – 17), it’s even possibleto automatically switch offagitation below a programmablelevel. The centre mounted tanklevel indicator is easy to read, bothfrom the cab and from the fillingplace. A very accurate digital tankread-out in the cab is available asan option with the GreenStarcontroller.

New spraying application

Self priming piston diaphragmpumps offer long life and depend-able performance, even at higherpressures. Pumps are available with115 l/min capacity (3 cylinder),160 l/min (4 cylinder) or 250 l/min (6 cylinder). All three pump typesfeature a pressure accumulator. Thisensures continuous flow withoutpulsations. An optional oil levelsensor and alarm help prevent pump

A three stage filtration system in-cludes a basket strainer in the fillingopening, a large 30 mesh screensuction filter and a central pressurefilter with a 50 or 80 mesh screen. These help prevent undilutedchemicals from the inductor fromentering the tank, protect the pumpfrom contaminants and preventnozzle clogging. Suction andpressure filters are placed togetherat the left side of the sprayer foreasy access.

Master and boom section valvescan be electrically operated fromthe cab. The durable stainless steelball valves are grouped at the centreof the boom, reducing dead volume.Start/stop of individual boomsections is completed in .25 secondsto help conserve chemicals andreduce overlap or missed areas. Forsprayers without automatic ratecontrol, three way boom sectionvalves with pressure calibration arefitted. When switching off boomsections, the pressure calibrationensures that the pressure andapplication rate remains constant.

No need to readjust pressurecalibration for different nozzlesanymore, thanks to a pre-set colourcoded dial. The colours of the disccorrespond with the colours of thedifferent nozzle caps. Simply turn thedial to the right colour if you changenozzles and the pressure calibrationis set properly.

John Deere offers three levels of regulation systems forapplication rate control:

SPRAY SYSTEM

1. Constant Pressure System.Pressure is controlled by a largediaphragm electric pressure regu-lator that ensures a stable, con-stant pressure. Constant pressureensures that the desired sprayquality is maintained under differ-ent circumstances. This improvescontrol of crop coverage and drift. In extreme conditions that lugdown the tractor’s engine (steephills, for instance), the constantpressure regulation prevents underand over dosages.

2. Constant Volume System. The constant volume system has avolumetric flow-control valve thatdistributes pump flow in constantrelation between the boom andreturn line to the tank. Since theflow rate (l/min) is proportionalwith the engine’s rpm, tractorspeed can be changed (within cer-tain limits) within one gear withoutaffecting application rate (l/ha).

3. Automatic Rate Control. With automatic rate control, theflow rate (l/min) is proportional tothe real tractor speed, resulting ina constant application rate (l/ha),even at varying speeds whenchanging gears. Simply enter thedesired application rate and nozzletype into the controller (EL-4 orGreenStar) and start spraying.

John Deere can offer automaticrate control in three differentversions:• pressure based• flow based• pressure and flow based

Pressure based regulation offersthe highest accuracy; flow basedregulation is the ideal choice forworking with liquid fertiliser. Thesolution with both pressure andflow based regulation combinesthe best of both worlds.

failures or costly damage from lowoil levels. And since the pump islocated at the back of the sprayer, hose routings are shorter. Thisminimises dead volume and wastedchemicals significantly. The pump iseasily accessed for maintenance.

systems offer more accuracyThink of the time and chemicalyou waste when you clean outthe spray system … or when you

start spraying a field for the first

time. After the sprayer has been

cleaned with rinse water and the

tank is refilled with chemical

again, it has to be purged from

spray lines on the headland before

chemical reaches all nozzles. The

headland can get an excessive

dose of chemical that leads to

burnt patches. And the first part of

the field may not be effectively

treated which shows up later as

triangles of weeds or disease.

The remarkable VRS technology

speeds and simplifies cleanout and

lets you begin spraying immedia-

tely upon entering a field. No need

to waste chemical at the head-

lands while you wait for the

spraying system to charge.

Non return valves at the end ofeach section prevent circulation fromthe spray lines to the tank whilespraying. No problems occur withflow-based control systems forautomatic application rate control. Sowhen you’re spraying, VRS operateslike a normal sprayer, since there isno circulation through the spraylines. After spraying is completed, clean water from the rinse tank canbe drawn directly into the spray linesto rinse the lines without actuallyspraying. So you can rinse thesprayer whenever – or wherever –you want. Unlike other continuousrecirculation systems with individualnozzle shut-off, VRS requires nospecial air or electrical supply. It’s asimple, reliable, cost effectivesystem.

An all-new boom brings newlevels of strength, stability andaccuracy to every spraying job.A special cross structure minimises

torsion and stress, resulting in high

reliability and long life.

unmatched versatility

This double folded boom is available in boomwidths from 15 to 24 m but folds to less than2.55 m for transport.

With a height adjustment range of 150 cm,the new boom design with parallelogramprovides all season long application. It’s theperfect answer when you need the utmost inversatility for spraying immature crops or forlate season spraying of tall crops. The boomheight can be read from the cab on an optionalscale located on the sprayer.

All swivel points of the boom have self-adjusting ball and socket bearings to ensuredependability and long life. The bearings alsoensure that the boom will not sag, even aftermany years of operation.

Spray booms fold in and out quickly. Bothboom arms fold in/out at the same time. Whenfolding on slopes, a connecting rod between theright and left arms prevent one side from

folding faster than the other. It is also possibleto fold in the boom tips to spray with a reducedworking width (optional) – great for smallheadlands. Folding of individual boom tips is

very helpful when spraying along obstacles inthe field, such as electrical lines.

As a further enhancement, variable geometryis available. You can raise and lower the boomsindependently of each other to spray slopingfields (A).

Rough fields and slopes can havea major impact on spray accuracy. That’s why the new John Deeredesign offers an outstanding three-way boom suspension; a centralpendulum system with shockabsorbers; an anti-yaw system withpolyurethane dampers that tie theleft and right boom arms togetheraround a pivoting central axis; andthe vertical shock absorption withthe hydro-pneumatic suspension ofthe parallelogram.

pinpoint precisionAdapt your John Deere Sprayer to your specific applicationneeds

High quality, stainless steelspray lines offer years of depend-able, trouble free service. Thespray lines are completelyprotected along the entire boomlength. End plugs and supply hosesare fitted with quick connectcouplings. Rinsing the sprayer orfitting a second spray line withdroplet hoses is therefore simpleand fast.

Breakaway protection works inthree directions. It allows the boomends to fold forward, backward orupwards if an obstacle is encoun-tered. After passing the obstacle, the boom will automatically returnto its original position.

Choose rugged single or multiple nozzlebodies. The product range includes 80 and 110 degree extended range flat fan nozzles, low drift deflector nozzles, air induction venturinozzles and special 8 hole nozzles for liquidfertiliser. Colour coded bayonet caps make iteasy to identify the correct nozzle. Thediaphragm check valve prevents dripping.Rotating nozzle bodies let you quickly switchfrom up to five different nozzles in the field.A blind position between each nozzle positionlets you quickly shut off individual nozzles.

Special asymmetric edge tips can be mounted20 cm from the last nozzle for spraying at fieldboundaries. If the edge tip is used, the lastnozzle should be closed. This strongly reducesemission of chemicals into the boundary of thefield. The edge tips can be controlled electricallyfrom the cab (optional). In some countries, theuse of edge tips along surface water is alreadymandatory.

Special nozzles, droplet pipes or droplet hoseswith separate spray lines are available to applyliquid fertiliser in late growing stages or tosensitive crops. All fitting material on the sprayeris composed of stainless steel or treated with aspecial coating to protect against the corrosiveaction of liquid fertiliser.

MONITORSadvanced, they’re simple

The ELC-1 and EHC-2 controlboxes work together with theGreenStar display. This is the sameunit found in John Deere tractors, combines and self propelled forageharvesters.

When the sprayer is connected, you will see and handle all theinformation and regulation for thesprayer through this same display. The display is easy to read, indaylight or at night and all theinformation on the display is shownthrough menus.

This one terminal replaces up to5 separate units that you would haveneeded in the past. Think about thespace you gain in the cab! You cancontrol application rate, droplet sizeand tank level.

The GreenStar controller also letsyou store important productivityinformation, including area sprayed

and volume, working time, totalworking time, working distance andtotal distance. It continuouslymonitors functions for wheel speed, flow, pressure, tank level and pumpoil level. And the monitor provides fulldiagnostics for fast troubleshooting.Less risk of costly downtime.

But most important of all, thehighly advanced spraying controlsystem will allow easy upgrades tofuture sprayer functions, such asdirect injection. It will also enable youto use GreenStar precision farmingsolutions using GPS, such as fielddocumentation, variablerate control and paralleltracking.

The ELC-1 box lets you control: spraying pressure, boommaster control valve, section valves (up to 9), edge tips, foammarker, boom tilt, agitation, working lights, pendulum lock, automatic tank filling and free function.

Both ELC-1 and EHC-2 monitorsoffer a new way of section control. You can open and close all boomsections sequentially with just threeswitches. Operation is much easierand the control boxes remain muchsmaller. You don’t have to search forthe switches when switchingsections on/off one after anotherwhen spraying in angled fields. TheLEDs show you the status of thesections (on/off). With the skip buttonyou can select any other possibleconfiguration. Instead of having touse up to 15 section switches, younow have much easier control withonly 3 switches. That’s technologythat pays!

TRACTOR MOUNTED SPRAYERStested by John Deere

John Deere engineers designed and tested the 500 Seriessprayers using advanced Pro-Engineer technology … a state-of-the-art system that allows incredibly precise measurements. It’s a behind-the-scenes benefit that ensures higher sprayingaccuracy in your fields.

The advanced patternatormoves automatically underthe spray boom duringoperation and collects infor-mation on the transverseliquid distributor, separatedin sections of 10 cm alongthe entire length of theboom. If the sprayer isequipped with five nozzlebodies, the test is repeatedwith five different nozzles.

The new John Deere sprayer factory in Horst, The Nether-lands, combines the best of both worlds: the latest manufactur-ing tools and systems of the world’s leading manufacturer ofagricultural equipment and the long time sprayer know-how thatcomes from building sprayers since 1947. Today, the John Deerefactory is capable of building sprayers in more than 20,000 dif-ferent configurations. One is perfect for YOUR needs!

John Deere’s comprehensive factory testing exceeds thetoughest current European standards. For example, if a sprayerpasses John Deere’s tests, it’s automatically certified for twoyears in Germany and The Netherlands, where the sprayer test isalready mandatory.

All nozzles are tested before delivery to ensure uniformcoverage that reduces over and under dose.
