    Commerce:

I joined the Lansing Regional Chambers o

Commerce (LRCC) almost a year ago and it was

a great decision or me and my business, Health

Numeric. I made a conscious decision to not stand on

the sidelines with a LRCC membership as my victory

trophy. I attended my rst Chamber 360 meeting and

met PTACs Kim Langenberg. Ive gained invaluable

knowledge rom Kim. She has helped me navigate

the treacherous CCR and ORCA process and now

Health Numeric is eligible to compete or government

contracts. Ive attended LRCC Mixers, luncheons and

orums and met business leaders, members and sta

willing to help me grow my business.

Pure Michiga: The GoldStadard or TourismPromotio

In just seven years since Pure Michigan made its debut as the states marketing brand,

the campaign has grown into one o the most nationally recognized and successul

tourism campaigns o all time. The man who helped launch Pure Michigan, GeorgeZimmermann o Travel Michigan, told the crowd at the February Economic Club

luncheon that other state tourism ocials rom around the country have labeled Pure

Michigan as the gold standard or tourism promotion.

Pure Michigan is recognized or its highly unique, beautiul, artistic and well-crated

expression o what Michigan is all about, said Zimmermann. We are recognized as

the poster child or tourism campaigns.

The growth or the Pure Michigan campaign is astounding. The year beore the

campaign started, Zimmermanns Travel Michigan oce was investing $5 million

in advertising. For years, the ocus was on attracting tourists rom other Midwest

communities including Chicago, Milwaukee and Indianapolis. Zimmermann

told the Economic Club crowd that in 2009, the decision was made to take Pure

Michigan to a national audience, and a corresponding increase in spending has

pushed the campaigns annual budget to $25 million, making Pure Michigan the sixth

largest tourism campaign in the nation.

The economic results have been incredible according to Zimmermann. Research

has shown that as o 2011, more than 100 million people were aware o the Pure

Michigan brand, ater just three years o promotion. Just last year, the campaign

had motivated 3.2 million trips to Michigan that resulted in $1 billion in spendingat Michigan businesses. The return on investment or the state was $4.90 or each

dollar spent on Pure Michigan advertising.

Zimmermann says the next phase or Pure Michigan is to reach out to an

international audience. Governor Snyder has proposed a $4 million increase in

the campaign budget specical ly or that purpose, with Toronto as the rst target,

ollowed by Europe, especially Germany, and Asia.

Toronto is Chicago number two or us, said Zimmermann. It is a huge, afuent

market and the potential is tremendous.

Pure Michigan will continue to emphasize bringing in out-o-state visitors.

Zimmermann noted there are 320 million people in the country, most o whom have

never considered a vacation in Michigan.

We are just at the beginning o our journey in many ways, said Zimmermann.

The philosophy or growth that MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) has adhered

to throughout the years is pretty straight orward: take care o its members with superior

service and products; build a great internal culture that emphasizes hiring, developing

and supporting outstanding sta; and embracing its role as a corporate steward

    committed to a vibrant community.

Its hard to argue with results.

From its opening in 1937, operating out

o a desk drawer in the Michigan State

    University Administration building, to the

recent construction o a LEED Gold-

certied headquarters on West Road in

East Lansing, MSUFCU has grown to

become the largest university-based credit union in the world. With more than 170,000

members and $2.3 billion in assets, MSUFCU is now the 53rd largest out o 7,011 credit

    unions in the United States.

When it comes to assets, MSUFCU has always viewed its members as number one.

Whether its providing the best rates on loans and deposits or ensuring a branch visit is a

pleasant experience, the aim is to make a trip to the credit union more than just an errand.

Our members love coming to the credit union, said April Clobes, MSUFCU

executive vice president and chie operating ocer. They know we care about

them and take care o them.

I members are asset number one at

MSUFCU, sta members might beconsidered as 1-A.

We treat people well, said Clobes.

Employees who are treated well, in

    turn treat members well.

    MSUFCU has a rigorous screening

process or new hires, who must go

through several interviews and then are required to attend a series o training

classes beore being placed on a job. Employees interested in advancing are

encouraged to take part in job shadowing to learn about other internal positions,

and also have opportunities to test their abilities by taking on a project to help

learn the ropes about other aspects o the operation.

Every day is a job interview or our team members, said Clobes.

Technology is playing an increasingly signicant role in the

continued growth o MSUFCU. To help meet the needs o the

20 percent o credit union members who dont live in Michigan

and the 30-40,000 members in the state who dont live in close

proximity to a branch, the MSUFCU team developed its own

home banking program. Recent technology initiatives include

development o mobile apps or Android and Apple devices

and e-depositing o checks. Online chats and e-mail questionservices were utilized by members more than 100,000 times in

    the past year.

All those questions are answered by people, said Clobes.

We do not script the answers.

As or the uture, MSUFCU expects to expand its

emphasis on business products and services, as supported

by its airly new business services department. Technology

initiatives will include integrating bill payment eatures

into mobile applications and text messaging alerts desired

by customers. A merger with Eaton County Educational

Credit Union is expected to be nalized on April 1, which

will give MSUFCU members access to it s rs t Eaton County b ranch outside

    Delta Township.

Growth will continue at MSUFCU, but it will be managed smartly.

We could grow aster, but we want to make sure we protect our brand, culture and

    service, said Clobes.

One can also be certain that the core MSUFCU philosophy - taking care o people

rom the inside out - will continue at the heart o its day-to-day operations. The

growth will most certainly take care o itsel.

The results o the growing rom within philosophy can be seen in all

departments at MSUFCU, starting at the top o the organization. President and

CEO Patrick McPharlin joined the team in 1973, and held several positions

beore assuming the top job in 2000. Clobes started in the marketing department

16 years ago and worked her way up through the chain beore assuming her

present position as chie operating ocer.

Sta retention is bolstered by the generous compensation packages atMSUFCU. In addition to a strong salary structure, MSUFCU is one o ew

organizations that continues to pay 100 percent o employee health coverage.

Employees also receive a two-to-one match on 401K contributions up to the

rst ve percent, tuition reimbursement and the opportunity to participate in

    corporate wellness initiatives.

MSUFCU has been widely recognized as a great place to work. The organization

was named as one o the Top 100 Workplaces in Michigan by the Detroi t Free

Press, or the second consecutive year. The Michigan Business and Proessional

Association also recognized MSUFCU as one o West Michigans 101 Best and

    Brightest Companies to Work For.

The MSUFCU commitment to community is immediately e vident when

entering the elegant headquarters in East Lansing. An impressive student art

exhibit in the lobby eatures brilliant art work rom students at 15 area schools.

Visitors are encouraged to vote or their avorite in whats called the Peoples

    Choice Awards.

Its great to see how many talented young people we have in the area, said one

    obviously impressed visitor.

Clobes says MSUFCU operates under a corporate philosophy that a business in

the community has a responsibility to enrich the surrounding community.

People who consider locating here want arts and culture, which is an important part

o building a great community, said Clobes. I we have a more vibrant community,

we create more jobs, which ultimately makes us all stronger.

Employees at MSUFCU take an active role in community endeavors. Each

department is represented on a charity committee that selects an organization to

support or the rst six months o the year. In addition to volunteering with that

organization, sta-only undraisers usually generate $30-40,000 or the chosennon-prot. In the second hal o the year, sta work centers around supporting the

United Way. In 2012, MSUFCU sta members contributed $55,000 to the United

    Way campaign.
