Joining the International Beach Volleyball GamesLarnaka’s sands will once again welcome a world-class beach vol-leyball tournament when the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championship lands on Foinikoudes beach between July 27-31, complete with international athletes and cheering crowds. This is the third time that Larnaka and the Cyprus Volleyball Federation are hosting age-class, world championships for the sport in the town. A specially constructed court was cre-ated on Foinikoudes beach for the tournaments and has since remained a permanent �xture - seating 1000 spectators and o�ering fantastic views of the sea. Aside from the thrill of the games and the seaside backdrop, the location also boasts a large variety of cafes, restaurants and bars along the length of the strip, together with cultural attractions and a large town centre parallel to the promenade. All these elements combine for a successful event that gives both athletes and spectators from around the globe the opportunity to fall in love with Lar-naka whilst enjoying a �rst-rate sporting competition.

LARNAKA: Historical and other places to seeThe successor of the ancient city-Kingdom of Kition andthe birthplace of Zeno, the great Stoic philosopher.

Evidence of Larnaka’s glorious past are scattered all accrossthe region. The most interesting places worth visiting inand around Larnaka are the following:

Church of St. Lazarus: Of great interest is the church of St.Lazarus. As the name suggests, it was built to enshrine thetomb of Lazarus, who,according to legend, wasexpelled from Bethany afterhis resurrection and forcedinto an unseaworthy boatwhich brought him to Kiti.Here he met with theApostles and wasconsecrated a bishop andcanonised. The Saint’sremains were discoveredand removed in 890AD.However, the sarcophagusis held in great veneration tothis day.

Angeloktisti Church: AtKiti, to the west of Larnakatown, is the famous churchof PANAYIA ANGELOKTISTI("build by Angels”). This11th Century buildingreplaced an earlier one,whilst the chapel at theentrance is of the 14thCentury. The outstandingfeature of the church is itssplendid early Byzantinemosaic, considered to bethe finest on the island. Thechurch is certainly worthvisiting for the mosaicalone.

Phaneromeni Church: On the way to the Airport there isthe underground chapel of Ayia Phaneromeni.

It is a rock cavern with the two chambers. The structuresuggests that it was a pagan tomb once, possibly datingback to Phoenician times. The place is credited with variousmagical properties: thus, those who suffer from headachesor other diseases walk three times round it and leave a pieceof clothing or a tuft of their hair. It is visited by girls, whoselovers are overseas, who come here to pray for their safety.

The Larnaka Medieval Castle was erected by the Turks in1625. This fort is now a museum and its inner courtyard isused as a an open air garden-theatre during the summermonths, by kind permission of the Director of Antiquities.

The Larnaka District Museum houses a rich collection ofantiquities from Larnaka and its surrounding district.

The Pierides Marfin Laiki Bank Museum contains a uniquearchaeological, medieval, post-Byzantine and Cypriot forkart collections gathered by five consecutive generations ofthe family. It also exhibits an old arsenal and a rich collectionof old chartography of Cyprus and the EasternMediterranean.

Municipal Art Gallery & City Museum & Archives. ThisMuseum is now open at the five old customs stores of Neo-Gothic architecture which were handed to the LarnakaMunicipality by the Cyprus Government. This dates back tothe early years of British rule in the late 19th century.

The Bust of Zeno stands at Europe’s Square in PhinikoudesAvenue. Zeno was born in Kition (ancient Larnaka), in 326B.C. After studying philosophy in Athens he founded thefamous Stoic school of Philosophy.

Ancient Kition: The earliest architectural remains date backto the 13th century B.C. In about 1200 BC the area wasrebuilt by Archaean Greeks. The remains of the CyclopeanWalls, made of giant blocks and the complex of the fivetemples are of interest.

The Hala Sultan Tekke lies on the banks of the Salt Lake.Within the precincts of this Tekke is the tomb of UmmHaram, said to be the foster mother of Mohammed.According to Moslem tradition Umm Haram died on thisspot in 647 A.D. while accompanying the Arab invaders. Shewas buried here and later the Ottomans built the present

The Larnaka Salt Lake is near Larnaka International Airport. Itfills up with water during the winter and is visited bymigratory birds, mainly flamingoes that stay here fromNovember until the end of March.

The Old Aqueduct, known as “Kamares”, stands outside thetown on the way to Lemesos. It was built in Roman style in1745 to carry water from a source about 6 miles south ofLarnaka into the town.

Larnaka Palm Trees Promenade: One of Larnaka’s mostdistinctive features is the seaside promenade lined with tallpalm trees. It is a popular meeting and walking placebordered by tavernas a sandy beach, the Medieval Castle andthe Marina.

Marina: The Largest Marina in Cyprus, located in“Phinikoudes”. Walking on the Marina Pier is a social activity ofthe locals.

Choirokoitia: It is the oldest site that one may visit in Cyprusand its dates back to 7000 B.C. It is included in the UNESCOWorld Heritage List.

Discovered in 1934, this significant site revealed numerousstone foundations of bee-hive shaped houses, usuallycircular. The houses themselves would have been of mudbrick and the ancient inhabitants of Choirokoitia buried theirdead under the floors of their dwellings. As many as 26 adultand infant skeletons have been discovered beneath 8superimposed floors in one of the houses.

S t a v r o v o u n iMonastery, about15 miles fromLarnaka, stands onthe peak of astriking lonemountain, overwhich St. Helena,the finder of thecross of Jesus, sawa strange light gleam. Taking it as a sign from heaven, shefounded the monastery and left a piece of the Crossenshrined there.

The traditional Village of Lefkara can be reached after apleasant drive through the hills. It is renowned worldwidefor its lace which is included in the UNESCO World list ofintangible Heritage.

The villages of Orini are in a mountainous area which isstudded with beautiful traditional architecture and oldchurches. A visit to this area, which offers breath-takingscenery is a must for the tourist as it is unspoilt anduntouched by tourist development. The most interestingvillages are Tochni, Skarinou, Vavatsinia, Ayioi Vavatsinias,Ora, Odou, Kato Drys and Vavla.

The Venetian Castle of Pyla at the centre of the villageand next to the old church of Archangel Michael. Pyla isthe only mixed village in Cyprus, where Greek and TurkishCypriots have lived peacefully together for many years.

Tower of Regena, 17km west of Larnaka is the Venetianobservation castle near Pervolia village. The castle standson a hill overlooking the beach and the surrounding areaand was used by the Venetians and Cypriots for observingthe coasts to inform the people of the approach of piratesand other invadors. From Pervolia castle they used tomake signals of fire and smoke to Pyla Castle informingthem of the coming danger.

The old chapel of prophet Elias is on the top of thehighest hill of Voroklini village. The visitor may have abreathtaking view of the whole Larnaka town, Voroklinivillage and the Larnaka Bay.

Larnaka Welcomes Kitesurfing ‘Royalty’ in JulyWith its reputation for possessing the best conditions in the Mediterranean for the thrilling sport of Kitesurfing, Larnaka’s dedicated kitesurfing beach is once again gearing up to wel-come fans and athletes to the ‘Cyprus Kitesurfing Champi-onships - King of Kite 2016’ (July 16 – 17) and Kite Camp 2016 (July 26-29).

The King of Kite is held annually at Kahuna Surfhouse in Softades-Kiti, with the coast of the area reputed to be the best ‘spot’ on the island to enjoy the sport. Since it began in 2013, the championship has become a premier event, which is further enhanced by the presence of a special guest judge and host each year. This year’s celebrity of the kite-surfing world is Lewis Crathern (UK) – a kiteboarding ath-lete, speaker, mentor and coach who has won multiple titles since 2005; commentates for the sport, and is a respected speaker and coach on sport education.

The event will feature a Slalom Race and Freestyle Com-petition, along with live DJ set, beach-themed merchandise stalls, food, drink and trampolining, with further details on https://www.facebook.com/Kahuna.kitesurfing.cyprus/.

Kitemed will then hold its second Kite Camp at ‘The Spot’ beach in Softades-Kiti, which will feature guidance from Dutch kiteboarder Youri Zoon who was PKRA World Cham-pion 2011 & 2012 and coaches kitesurfing all over the world. Musical Magic in the Mountains

The hills of Kato Drys village will come alive with the sound of music when the eagerly anticipated Fengaros Music Village and Fengaros Music Festival return in July, bringing a big name celebrity from the international music scene with them too.

The Fengaros Music Village 2016 takes place from July 24 – 29 and consists of music, theatre and storytelling workshops, which will be led by artists from Cyprus, Greece and England. The organisers - Louvana Records in collaboration with the an-nual Music Village in Greece – say that the village o� ers musi-cians the opportunity to learn their craft, bond musically and spark their creativity.

The Fengaros Music Festival will then follow from July 29 – 31 with a line-up of over 30 artists from Cyprus, Greece, Israel and the UK playing across three stages, including the British soul sensation and global star, Joss Stone. Ticket holders will also have free use of the campsite and its facilities.

Now in its third year, the festival is now one of the premier cul-tural events of the summer, and organisers Louvana Records are expecting record numbers of visitors to the picturesque vil-lage. For more information, visit http://louvanarecords.com/.

Cyprus Potato Salad

Ingredients • 4 large Cypriot potatoes, scrubbed and diced • 1 large onion, halved and thinly sliced • 2 cloves garlic, sliced • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 400g tin chopped tomatoes • sea salt and black pepper • 1 bunch fresh oregano or flat leaf parsley • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 250g baby spinach • 100g feta cheese

Method

1. Place the potatoes in a pan and cover with salted water then bring to the boil and simmer for 4 minutes until ten-der then drain and cool.

2. Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan and fry the po-tatoes until golden. Remove from the pan and set aside.

3. Fry the onions, garlic and spices until lightly golden.

4. Place the potatoes back in the pan with the onions and add the tomatoes. Cook on a high heat to reduce the to-matoes slightly for about 3 minutes then add the spinach.

5. Remove from the heat straight away and gently toss the spinach so that it just wilts then add the vinegar and some of the chopped oregano or parsley.

6. Pour into a serving dish then crumble the feta cheese on top, sprinkle some olive oil, black pepper and more fresh herbs

7. Serve with some crusty bread.
