The purpose of this lesson is for students to review the structure and parts of a cell, and to
investigate the ways that the cell parts function together as a whole.
SC.6.L.14.4: Compare and contrast the structure and function of major organelles ofplant and animal cells, including cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria, and vacuoles
Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:* (Knowledge Level) describe the parts of the cell, and their functions.
* (Knowledge Level) identify and label the parts of the cell.* (Application Level) demonstrate your ability to assign the organelles to their functions
within the cell.* (Synthesis Level) create your own cell model using items that represent the organelles
and their functions within the cells. Materials Needed:
computers (8 one per student) Smartboard

2/2
1. Teacher will walk around the room to observe student activity.2. Teacher will check for completion of quizlet.com vocabulary flashcards.3. Teacher will periodically assess students progress as they complete the beacon
learning center activity.
4. Students will show teacher the completion screen on the nobel prize cell game.5. Students will complete the Harcourt cell part activity as a class.6. Homework will be assigned and assessed.
Activity:
Students will begin by opening the ebook to page 20 and reading through the vocabulary
list. Upon reading the vocabulary list, students will create vocabulary flashcards usingquizlet.com.
Students will then break into their small groups of 3 students per group and read through
their assigned section of the chapter. Students will work together on google docs to createsection outlines which will be shared as a class document. Students will then present their
chapter outlines on the Smartboard while students follow along online.
Students will then switch to group assignments of 2 using the chart. As a team they willcomplete the beacon learning center activity. Throughout the process students will take
notes on google docs and collaborate with their partner to complete notes as indicated onthe beacon learning center activity. Notes will be shared with the teacher, to be assessed
for activity completion.
Individual activity- students will then log into an interactive cell game on nobelprize.org.Students will follow the comic book characters adventure by reconstructing the cell. In this
activity students will be requred to recognize organelle functions and chose the appropriate
organelle to complete the task. After winning the game students will show the teachertheir completed page activity.
Whole class- The teacher will open the Harcourt cell activity. Students will be called up to
the Smartboard to move the organelle name to its matching picture within the cell.
2 day homework assignment- students will create a 3D cell using items found at home.
Each item should represent the organelle and its function. For example a battery can beused as the mitochondria because it is the powerhouse of the cell creating energy within the
cell. Students will present their 3d projects orally in class.
Notes
This lesson was written for a paperless classroom, but if each student does not have theirown computer the lessons can be done either whole class, if you have a Smartboard, or if
your school has a computer lab students can complete the lesson in the lab.
