HHELPELP, I N, I NEEDEED A LA LOCKSMITHOCKSMITH!!

It was a bitterly cold winter, with record snow fall in the east and temperatures dipping to19 degrees - below zero that is - in Chicago. It was the kind of cold that turns motor oil intosludge, forms ice crystals in your veins and causes this critters brittle bones to creek. I hateit. After living in Texas for 15 years where the temperature seldom dips below 40 degrees -above zero that is - this 19 below zero stuff isn’t fit for the abominable snowman, which is justwhat I was beginning to feel like, and worse yet, look like.

Suddenly, the clouds in the sky parted, the sun’s rays cradled the earth in a caressingblanket of warmth and the mercury in the thermometer began going up - all the way to 55 -instead of down, for the first time in what seemed like forever. It wasn’t a day too soon either,I was becoming clinically depressed. OK, maybe not clinically depressed. I only felt likecommitting suicide once, on that 19 degree below zero day. To be clinically depressed, Ibelieve you need to have actually attempted suicide. One more 19 below zero day, and Iwould have qualified.

Lucky for me, I was granted a reprieve and the earth, along with myself, thawed. It was abrief thaw, but a badly needed one. It was a Saturday morning in the middle of February andhoards of people were in the streets gazing at the fire-ball in the skyas if it were an unknown oddity. All I knew is, it felt cuddlierthan my flannel lined bunny toed slippers.

After being house bound for the last six weeks, I was getting abit stir crazy and decided to take a drive downtown to cruise theMiracle Mile (Michigan Avenue) and stop in a store or two.Trying to find a parking place on the streets of downtownChicago is like hunting for open space in a bee-hive. You needeyes like a hawk, the speed and reflexes of a cheetah, as well

as be half insane looking for a spot on the street in thefirst place.

After circling the store for about 30 minutes, aparking spot finally opened. I swung my

car into the space, threw the shifter intopark and gasped a sigh of relief. Finally, I canstretch my legs a little. Before doing so, I neededto make a small withdraw from the local bank topay the parking meter. Sliding open the ash tray, Idug for every quarter I had, and I do mean everyquarter. Twenty-five cents only buys 15 minutes of parking timehere. I was able to scavenge up $1.25 in quarters, I hadn’t made adeposit lately, and I was ready to go.

After the meter gobbled everything I could feed it, I lightlypatted my back pocket for my wallet, check, then my front pocketfor my keys - Uh Oh! - something’s missing here. Another pat toboth front pockets this time and my heart momentarily stopped.

With the meter happily counting down, I peered through thewindow of my car and sure enough, my keys were hanging from the

ignition. Great, this is just great.

Under the circumstances, I’m proud to say I remained quite calm andcollected. Now, you’d think my reserved calmness was due to the fact that

I’m a locksmith who would laugh at the perceived daunting of a locked

vehicle, right? Wrong! I remained calm because I hadn’t noticed the exhaust billowing fromthe back of my car yet. Yes, I not only locked my keys in the car, this knuckle-head also

failed to at least, turn the ignition off before doing so. Right about now seemed like a goodtime to get hysterical. I have never done that in my life! Ever! I swear.

As gloomy as things may have seemed, I did have an Ace, orrather a card, up my sleeve. As a professionally, well prepared,

ever-ready locksmith, I did have a credit card key in my wallet.See, I’m not a total idiot. Smug and confident, as if I hadeverything well under control, I sassily reached into my backpocket and whipped out my wallet like a detective crackingopen his badge. Lets see here, a credit card, bank card,social security card, phone card, Sam’s card, drivers license,

a picture of my wife, oh wait a minute, that’s not my wife,that’s the picture that came with the wallet. I remember now

why I bought this wallet, I can’t tell you how many guys think mywife is the spitting image of Sophia Loren. Just kidding, actually my

wife is much prettier.

As you’ll notice, I had every card known to man except a credit card key. Youdon’t think that’s because it was in my Daytimer daily planner on my dresser at home doyou? What a bonehead! OK, maybe I am a total idiot.

As the temperature gauge in my car began to rise - along with my blood pressure - it wastime to implement plan two. Look for a pay phone to call for help. There’s nothing morefrustrating than being a locksmith locked out of your car, with it running no less, and nothaving the tools to open it. Grrrr. Finding a Chinese restaurant nearby, I headed straight forthe phone to call the police. Oh man, I feel the heat from that one. It was a joke, relax. I cansee it now, my mail box is going to be full of death threats and ticking packages. You didn’tthink I would call a locksmith and be totally humiliated did you? Not a chance. Like ET, Iphoned home for my dad to get the credit card key in my Daytimer.

Driving like a seasoned technician, my dad was downtown in no time. Finally, the elusivecard key. I was about to wave my dad on when I thought I had better make sure it workedfirst. I knew it would, until I inserted it into the door lock and it didn’t turn. OK, no problem Itold myself, maybe one side just wasn’t cut quite right. That didn’t make me feel a whole lotbetter because I’m the one who cut this card key. Turning the key over, I proceeded to trythe other side. It still didn’t turn. I tried again and again until I almost broke the plastic keyoff in the lock. (That would have been another story in itself.) Nothing, Zip, Zero, Zilch. Icouldn’t believe it. What else can go wrong? Don’t ask.

All right, I’ve had just about all the fun I can stand on this beautiful, bright, soon to bewasted, sunny day. It was time to implement the universal car opener.

Sensing things weren’t going as planned as I scavenged the street for a warm, my dadparked his car to offer his professional help and advice.

“Let me try my key” he offered.

There’s no way its going to work, I’m thinking to myself, his car is an older Ford with pintumbler locks and mine is a newer Ford with 10-cut locks. Two totally different locks and twototally different keys, there’s just no way, but as a good son, I humored him by agreeing. Myteeth nearly dropped out of my head when the ignition key to my dad’s car turned my doorlock as if it were made for it. Unbelievable. Like I said, I had no doubt it would work. I hate itwhen I’m wrong. OK, maybe this “one” time, dad knew best.

You know, as I recall this most embarrassing, humiliating and painfully memorableexperience, maybe that 19 below zero stuff wasn’t so bad after all. It’s hard to be a buffoonand lock yourself out of your car when you’re house bound!

P.S. What’s that you ask? Why didn’t the credit card key operate my car? Oh, I knowwhat you’re thinking, you think I couldn’t even properly cut a key don’t you? Well, I’m sorryto disappoint you, but I am a little smarter than that. The card key wasn’t for my currentvehicle, it operated a car I owned previously. So there.

A Sense Of AdmirationI have to confess to some

admiration for the unnamed towtruck owner in Springfield, Missouri.I’m referring to the guy whomRichard Solomon keeps belittling inyour letters column. Evidently, theman is scrambling for business andtaking courses to improve the servicehe offers to customers. It is toughenough to compete in the marketplace, without Solomon playing crueltricks on him, and calling him uglynames.

Hard work and self-improvementare very much in the American spirit.Mr. Solomon seems to have aproblem with that.

That tow truck owner must be aman of remarkable patience. Afterbeing challenged to open anintentionally broken truck door,many men would have intentionallybroken Solomon’s nose. It is nowonder he chose to attempt thathumiliating stunt in the presence offour police officers.

Fortunately, the entrepreneurialspirit is the American way. Un-fortunately, we will all encounterjerks like Solomon from time to time.

Try Helping, Not HurtingI read the article “Certified

Locksmith” written by RichardSolomon in the February 1996 issue. Ireally did not think it was ashumorous as he did; it appeared tome as a belittling article from a manwith a big ego. I was really surprisethat you published it. I am a firmbeliever in praising one for his or herefforts; not belittling one as he did.We all start somewhere (some of usfrom the bottom of the ladder ofsuccess while others are more luckyand with friendly help start a littlefurther up this ladder called success.)He should be thankful that this didnot happened to him; or has heforgot he was there once himself. Myadvice to him is please do not do thiswith others. Especially your ownchildren if you have them. Try toreach down and help someone elseup; don’t kick them in the face ontheir way up. If you find it too hardto help someone else; at least do notbelittle them.

More AlarmsI am an avid reader of your

magazine, especially as I am new tothe trade (my one-man mobile shopthat turned one year old on Jan. 30.) Iwas inspired to write when I read aletter in this month’s issue written byChris Peacock, CPL, New York. Hementioned your recent alarm articlesby ITI and he’s right. I too, can’t be adealer because they (ITI) said “hadtoo many dealers in that area.” I hadjust assumed that ITI wouldn’t sellme their product because of my lackof alarm experience. I admit that I’venever installed or serviced anyalarms. This is why I’ve been readingthese articles that you’ve beenprinting. ITI makes theirinformational articles sound like theyhave the best alarms, “particularlyfor new installers” (p.33 TheNational Locksmith 11/95).

I stopped reading the ITI articlesin December 1995, when I finally wasdenied dealership. I almost stoppedreading Chris Peacock’s letter when Isaw the letters ITI. But I am glad thatI finished reading his article - thanksChris. I, too, would like to see morearticles on alarms, using a widerscope. Maybe you could write anarticle that would inform locksmithsof the different types of alarms, aswell as the different companies whowill distribute them to locksmiths.

Up For AssociationsIn reference to postings against

joining local associations; I too wasagainst joining an association for thefirst five years of my business. Italked with a friend of mine in anassociation in my neighboring stateand he seemed so pleased with his

experiences that I joined in my state.The locksmith I contacted to sign meup was nowhere to be found on thefirst meeting I attended (He wasbusy I’m sure) and I almost left neverto return as most of the otherlocksmiths were busy chatting witheach other, and I felt mighty strangestanding there alone. Just as I startedfor the door I heard a voice frombehind say “You must be new, let meshow you around. I turned and metwhat turned out to be one of thefinest locksmiths you will ever find.This man has helped me throughmany projects and has never askedfor anything in return. The amountof money that I will make withinformation he so willingly shared isin itself enough to make me glad Ijoined, but the friendship with himand others like him in our associationmean even more to me.

Yes, there are small groups of selfcentered people in each associationand each person has their ownagenda as with any group of people.I agree that there are problems andthat a lot of associations are operatedwith the same group in power yearafter year, but you could join andvote them out and help to changewhat may be wrong.

Don’t let one or two sour pusseskeep you from becoming active in anassociation, I assure you there aresome super locksmiths at thesemeetings and some super locksmithswaiting in the wings to turn everymeeting into an event everyone willbe proud to attend.

Who knows, maybe you’ll meetsomeone like Phil Ashley (owner ofA.L.S. locksmith of in Landrum, S.C.)and be as proud as I am to call him afriend, teacher and fellow member ofthe S.C.L.A.

By the way, I don’t have anyletters after my name either but IRESPECT the efforts of those that do.

The Slim Jim’s Final VerdictI am writing this letter to let other

locksmith’s know what seriousproblems there are in using this toolon newer automobiles. I have been inthe locksmith field for only five yearsand haven’t used one yet. I guess Ihave been taught by one of the bestCML’s, Jesse O. Brown, fromAlabama to never use a Slim Jim. Hehas taught me to pick a lot of car’s,

except GM’s. My main complaint isPolice and Sheriff’s departmentsdoing our job as locksmiths. I don’tknow if anyone is aware of it, butthere is a Federal law that prohibitsPolice departments and lawenforcement agencies, from havingsuch tools and I am looking into thismatter very deeply. Let me give youlocksmith’s an example of whatcould happen in the near future.Let’s say that someone has called thePolice Department for help becausethey have locked their keys in theirautomobile. The Police take it uponthemselves to open the automobilewith a Slim Jim and find out theycan’t open it. A locksmith is finallycalled and he comes out to open it,and within five minutes it is open.Now let’s assume that within oneweek this same automobile is in aserious accident and it catches on fireand the driver grabs the door handlefrom inside and it doesn’t open andthe driver dies due to the fact that thelinkage has been tampered with.Now comes the biggest question,who is responsible - the Police or thelocksmith who opened it last? Was itthe locksmiths fault, the answer isNO, it is the Police because a SlimJim had been used to jimmy thelinkage loose by an inexperiencedperson who thinks they are trying tohelp. The moral of the story is, let thelocksmiths do their work, and let thePolice enforce the law.

Thisstatement is not exactly correct. I assumehe is referring to Public Law 100-690,Section 3002(a) - Non Mailabil ity OfLocksmithing Devices, which was passedunder the “Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1998”in which Police departments and lawenforcement agencies are not exemptfrom the law.

According to this law, a manufacturer,distributor, or individual is prohibited bylaw to knowingly sell or deposit throughthe mail or delivery, lockout or bypasstools to anyone except; a lockmanufacturer or distributor; a bona fidelocksmith; a bona fide repossessor; or amotor vehicle manufacturer or dealer.

This law, however, only applies to lockoutor bypass tools that are sold through the

mail or transported by any interstatemailing or delivery service. In most states,it is not against the law for anyone topossess such tools if purchased over thecounter. This is why they are sold in manyauto parts stores. Greg Mango

It Does Do Ford’sMr. Mazzone’s “Automotive Tool

Showcase” article in the Februaryissue was well written andinformative. One correction has to bemade regarding the LTI 620 LockPick Set. The Ford ten cut ignition

can be picked using the G.M. picks.The Ford sidebar lock is basically thesame as the G.M. sidebar lock. Usethe G.M. picks with the cuts up onthe Ford and down for G.M. Weargloves when using these picksbecause they have a tendency to diginto your skin, being that the handleis in the middle.

Roadside Price SlashingI have just heard from two of our

members that Pontiac Roadside hasannounced price cuts for locksmiths.Besides reducing what they will payfor cutting a key and delivering it,they have reduced other services. Tointerrogate a VATS, the maximumpayment is now $77.00. Since thedealers in my area are charging $225to $250 plus towing, I get the feelingthat Pontiac is trying to get us towork for minimum wages or less.

They also want this service 24hours a day, 365 days a year. I guessthis means that this year we have justmissed our one day of vacation - Feb.29. As much as many locksmithsseem to hate associations, this is theone place that an association (eitherlocal or national) can try to help.Numbers DO mean clout. Of coursethis is hard to do as long as we havethe amateurs going out for $5.00service calls. Let’s get professional -the same as the plumbers andelectricians - and demand fair wages- not minimum.

Roadside ReactionJust my two cents on the subject of

Roadside price slashing. I do not, andwill not, let other companies tell mehow much I am going to charge to doa job. If all locksmiths thought thissame way, these companies wouldnot be able to control you! Thesecompanies will only use thecompanies that allow them to controlthem. If no locksmiths allowed thesecompanies to control them, then theywould have no choice but to paywhat your price is! So tell me, how can any of theseroad services determine what yourcost of doing business is? And even ifthey could, why would you allowthem to? It is your business, nottheirs! Would you go into somebodyelse’s business and tell the ownerhow much he/she is going to sellhis/her product to you for? NO! (Ifyou did, he/she would most likelyshow you the door)

Car manufacturers are makingcars more and more difficult to open,which means these road services arebeing required more and more to usethe services of locksmiths, mainlybecause they are tired of paying toomuch in repairs. Don’t let them tellyou how to run your business, justbecause they need you!

There are occasions when drillingthrough the front of a bank vault door to

overcome a lockout simply isn’t practical. Suchwas the case of the Mosler door in photograph 1. This door

was labeled by Underwriters as a class three burglar rate, which meansit will resist penetration with electric or mechanical tools for a minimum of two hours.

B oth combination locks were operational, both wouldunlock. The wheel handle to retract the locking bolts

was the problem. It spun freely. The operator of the vaultsaid that when he attempted to turn the wheel, there wasthe sound of something falling to the bottom of the door.There obviously was a disconnection between the handleshaft and the carriage bar of the locking bolts.

Oddly, this same situation occurred to this door twoyears previously. A concrete coring company was calledand they cut a hole through the wall to the right side of thedoor. A safe technician crawled through the hole andunlocked the door from the inside. When the same problemreoccurred, the coring company was called again.

This is where I came into the picture. The coringcompany called me and said they had scheduled a time for

coring the wall and would I be available to open the doorfrom the inside. We discussed the cost of my services andan estimate for the repairs. A second telephone callconfirmed that the customer had accepted the cost figures.All systems were a go!

The thickness and makeup of the vault wall was eighteeninches of solid concrete intertwined with reinforcing bars.Photograph 2, shows the technician operating the concretecoring machine. The rig is anchor bolted to the vault wall.Outside the building, a portable pump supplies hydraulicfluid through hoses to rotate the massive sixteen inch holesaw. The curved pipe resting over the technicians knee isfrom a vacuum machine. A heavy spay of water fed frominside the hole saw is directed at the diamond tip cuttingedges to flush away material. As the water trickles down thewall, the vacuum picks up the excess and dumps it into areceiving container.

Photograph 3, shows the completed hole. The first coringof the vault was to the right side of the door. That areainside the vault now has equipment setting against the wall,which eliminated that portion of the wall to core. It wasdecided to cut the hole to the left of the vault door. Notknowing the configuration of the vault, the cored hole hitthe edge of the left wall. In photograph 3, you can seepieces of reinforcement bar protruding from the left vault

wall. This decreased the size of the hole from sixteen toabout twelve inches. The corner of a small metal cabinetcan be seen in the lower right portion of the hole.

The amount of time to set up, cut the hole and pack awaythe equipment, was about twelve hours. The actual

cutting time was seven and one half hours. The excessivereinforcing bar doubled the normal cutting time to createthe sixteen-inch diameter hole. This vault wall wasunusually tough!

My aged and ‘fully contoured’ body wasn’t going to fitthrough the reduced hole size. A call to safe technicianextraordinaire Lee Swearingen, brought his trim lean bodydashing to the scene. Before I could take a picture of himslithering through the hole, he was inside asking for anoffset screwdriver. Within two minuets, he called out toturn the wheel handle and the vault was open.

Photograph 4, confirms what I had suspected. Theconnecting bar from the handle shaft to the carriage barhad loosened and had fallen off. The shouldered handleshaft was secured to the door with a nut and cotter pin. Thesquare hole in the connecting bar slides onto the squareend of the handle shaft. A single nut secured the bar to theshaft.

T o prevent this part from loosening again, a spacer wasput onto the shaft. The threads of the shaft were coated

with Loc-tite and the nut tightened. A hole was drilledthrough the shaft to allow an additional cotter pin to beinstalled. This nut wasn’t going to loosen and fall off again!Photograph 5, shows the connecting bar installed. Note:There are two round posts just below the carriage bar. Oneon each side of the connection bar. These act as throwstops for the handle. The turning of the wheel handle onlymoves about ten degrees from open to lock.

The layout of the door is shown in photograph 6. Thedoor is controlled by a three-movement time clock and twoMosler MRK402 locks. The top lock is mounted verticaldown and the lower lock is vertical up. It was strange to seethe LaGard 1730 Restrict-a-Vision dials driving the Moslerlocks. (See photograph 1) Also notice the two small turnbuckles adjusting the wire cables to the relockers. There isone above and one below the carriage bar. The widevertical bar in the left side of the photograph is the lockingbar for the door. This door does not have individual lockingbolts. The locking bar runs the height of the door.

In photograph 7, the flat plate that covers the areabetween the two locks has been removed, showing theunusual locking mechanism. Each of the Mosler locks has ablock extension attached to the locking bolt. The top lockhas a pivoting vertical flat bar attached to its extensionblock. In the locked position, this vertical bar lays flatagainst the side of the lower extension block. The snubberbar- the short horizontal bar - cannot slide pass the verticalpivoting bar.

I f you compare this photograph with photograph 8, you’llsee how the pivot bar operates. The top combination lock

is unlocked. The locking bolt has retracted and lifted thepivot bar up to clear the locking bolt of the lower lock. Thesnubber bar is attached to the carriage bar. When thewheel handle is turned, it moves the snubber bar againstthe free pivoting vertical bar. This side movement issufficient to allow the doors locking bolt (bar) to beretracted. When the snubber bar is moved away, thepivoting bar returns to its original position, allowing the toplocking bolt to extend. Either combination lock will openthe vault. If the lower lock is used, the extended blocksimply moves below the end of the pivoting bar, freeing it tobe moved by the snubber bar.

Also notice in photograph 8, the relocker wires runningunder both lock cases. These wires attach to the turnbuckles shown in photograph 6. The relockers are springloaded blocks. When fired, they prevent the doors lockingbar from retracting.

Photograph 9, shows the door standing open. It’s nineinches of solid steel from the door face to the lock cases.The small knob on the door frame is a ventilation switch tocirculate air within the vault. Coring a vault wall is alwaysan option, especially when the malfunction is within thedoor mechanism or the exact layout of the inner door is notknown.

This is the final installment of athree part series on the subject of

Best style interchangeable core locks.The final details will include the keystop, the physical process of decodingand pinning, and some unique details(of servicing and construction) forindividual Best style cores manu-factured by a few of the companiesother than Best.

The Key StopThe vast majority of keys used for

commercial type lock cylinders makeuse of a shoulder stop to properlyposition the tumbler cuts (on the key)directly under each of the tumblers in

the lock. Illustration 1,compares a Best style key to a

standard key with ashoulder stop. ABest style key hasa notched key stopon the bottomsurface of the keyblade, just beforethe actual tip ofthe key.

In photograph 1, the circular metalplate that is normally riveted to theback of the plug of a Best style corecan be seen. The cutout in the plateallows the actual tip of the key toprotrude through that opening. Theplate also acts as the key stop, whilethe notch on the bottom of the Best

style key hits thatsurface of this plateand prevents the keyfrom going in too far.Photograph 2, showsthat plate which actsas the key stopattached to the backof the plug. A keyhas been insertedinto the plug and ifyou look closely, thetip of the key can beseen sticking outslightly from theopening in that plate.

variety of lengths,although most of thecurrent production isin the six or sevenpin chamber variety.I have seen somemuch older coreswith four or five pinchambers. Because aBest style key isgauged near the tip,the standard lengthkeys (made now)can be used on anylength core regar-dless of how short orlong the core is.

Rekeying a Best StyleI-Core

A Best style interchangeable corecan be rekeyed numerous times. It isnot, however, rekeyed the same waythat most ordinary pin tumbler lockcylinders are.

Most standard pin tumbler lockcylinders are rekeyed by removing theplug retainer (from the back of thecylinder), and then using a tubeshaped plug follower to follow out theplug. After reassembly, a new keycombination will operate the lockcylinder. A Best style I-Core is notnormally designed to come apart. Byits construction, the plug is effectivelyriveted to the other components of thecore. Since the plug is not removed,the tumblers are normally unloaded orinstalled through the top pin chamberopenings of the IC lock’s shell.

With the notable exception of theFalcon clone of the BEST style cores,a Best style core uses caps that sealeach pin chamber individually. Tounload the pin chambers (for apreviously coded I-Core), the capsmust first be removed.

The Pin EjectorThe caps that seal the top of each

pin chamber are essentially a press fit.That means that you can’t merely turna Best style core upside down andexpect the caps, springs and tumblersto just fall out of the core.

To rekey a previously coded I-Core,you must apply force to dislodge thepin chamber caps. Photograph 3 ,shows a bottom view of a Best stylecore. This particular core is a Bestcompatible, but is actually an ArrowLock Co., I-Core.

You can seeseven holesalong the bottomsurface of thecore. These ho-les are in linewith the pinchamber holes,but they have amuch smallerdiameter thanthe .110” dimen-sion for thediameter of aBest Style pintumbler. That

indicates that the pin tumblers cannotslip through or fall out of the holes.These are pin ejector holes which areused to eject the cap, spring and pinsof each chamber. Just to the right ofthe I-Core is a pin ejector tool used toaccomplish the task.

Photograph 4, shows how the pinejector tool fits through a pin ejectorhole in the bottom of an I-Core, andeventually (when forced sufficiently)pushes all the way through the top ofthe pin chamber. If tumblers had been

loaded in thatparticular pinchamber, the pine j e c t o r t o o lwould have firstmade contactwith the bottomtip of the bottompin. As the toolwas forced in-ward into thehole, the entirepin stack wouldbe pushed to-ward the top ofthe pin chamber.Because the capwould give someresistance tobeing pushed outfrom the top, thetumbler spring(which is locatedbetween the topof the pin stackand the capitself) would bec r u s h e d a sadditional forcew a s a p p l i e d .When sufficientforce was di-rected againstthe resisting cap,it would finallypop out from thetop of the pinchamber. Aftert h e c a p w a sforced out from the top of the pinchamber, the crushed spring and thevarious pin tumblers could also bedumped out of the chamber.

The Capping BlockThe capping procedure normally

requires a fixture to properly align thecaps to the individual pin chambers.Photograph 5, shows a capping blockthat will hold the I-Core in place whilethe caps are pressed in place at thetop of each chamber. On top of thefixture, you can see seven holes thatcoincide with the seven pin chambersin a Best style I-Core. This fixture canbe used with a seven pin core, but willalso work with cores that have six oreven fewer pin chambers. The cappingtool (or punch) is in my hand just tothe left of the capping block fixture.

An I-Core has been inserted intothe front opening of the capping blockfixture in photograph 6. After all thepins are loaded in each of the pin

chambers, the tumbler springs wouldthen be loaded. The caps for eachchamber would be dropped into theloading holes on the top of the fixture,and then the capping tool (punch)would be used to press the caps inplace. The length of the punch is justlong enough to press the cap justbelow the top surface of the core. Ifthe cap was pressed to far into the pinchamber, the tension of the tumblercould increase and make it moredifficult for insertion or removal ofkeys from the keyway. If the capwasn’t far enough in, it could stick outfrom the top of the core. That couldmake it difficult to slide the I-Core intoa compatible housing.

There are several other BEST stylemounting blocks and decapping

tools available. The one used here isjust one example. I suggest checkingwith your distributor or attending atrade show to compare the varioustypes available for the one that willbest suite your needs.

Variations of the BestStyle I-Core

The main reason for the existenceof the Best clones is to tap into anexisting market. For many years now,there have been I-Core locks ofdifferent designs made by other lockmanufacturers. When a new customeris introduced to I-Core locks for theirquick change capability and otheradvantages, the customer needs bothcores and housings to make the

system work.That means that(unless the pricedifference is verydramatic) anybrand of I-Corehas an equalshot. Where theBest style corehas the obviousedge, is when acustomer alreadyis using Bestbrand I-Coresand all the locksin the facilityalready haveBest style hou-sings.

If you sell a Best compatibleproduct like Arrow, Falcon, KABAPeaks, KSP or others, you have theadditional option of selling only cores.Since the housings are already inplace, the ultimate financial cost to thecustomer is reduced compared to anew system which requires not onlycores, but also housings and the laborfor installation. Because the intent iscompatibility, most other brands of

Best style cores are virtually identicalin every way, including assembly andservicing procedures.

F alcon makes a Best style core thatfollows most of the rules of Best

original products, with a relativelyminor alteration. Where virtually allother clones of Best also use caps onindividual pin chambers, Falconmakes an I-Core that uses a singlepiece spring cover that is long enoughto cover all the pin chambers together.When using that type of I-Core, youwould not use a standard cappingblock. Illustration 2, is of a cappingblock that is made by A-1 SecurityManufacturing Corp. This fixture hastwo different tops. One is for thestandard type with pin chamber caps,and the other is used for Falcon typespring covers.

While most companies that makeBest style cores and keys try tomanufacture most of Best’s keyways, anumber of them also have their ownunique keyways. In those cases, thecore would still maintain the Best pinstack and other specifications, but thekeyway would not be one that is beingmade and used by Best Lock Co.

Patented Key ControlMost locksmiths are familiar with

the “unlawful to duplicate” warning onmost Best brand keys. Even the aftermarket key blank manufacturers oftenplace that same warning on their keys.As far as I have been able todetermine, there is no law that statesthat duplicating those particular keysis in any way illegal. It appears tomerely be a low budget attempt at keycontrol. They hope that the messageon the key will scare people fromtrying to get duplicate keys made. It’ssomewhat obvious that the tactic hasnot been extremely effective.

B e s t a n d m a n y o t h e r m a -nufacturers have been trying for yearsto obtain utility patents on their keysto effectively restrict unauthorized keyduplication. The problem with a utilitypatent is that it must deal with morethan just appearance. The patented

aspect of the key must be functional.Other brand (non Best style) I-Corelocks have had patent protected keys,but most of them used a larger figure8 profile for their cores. The largersize provided room to add extrafunctional parts and components. Thesmaller profile of the Best style corehas made it extremely difficult formany manufacturers to add functionalcomponents in such limited space.

U ntil recently, only one Bestcompatible core could boast

patented key control. That productwas the KABA Peaks interchangeablecore lock, shown in photograph 7. Theside view of the key, in photograph 8,shows the “Peaks” just past the keyshoulder and before the key cuts. ThePeaks operate a special tumbler at thevery front end of the core. Thattumbler can be seen at the top of thekeyway in photograph 9. If you look at

the side view in photograph 10, youwill see the narrow space at the frontof the core where that pin chamber islocated. Because of the functionaldesign, KABA was able to obtain autility patent for the “Peaks,” whichalso gave their keys patent protection.Anyone who makes a KABA Peakskey without authorization will be inviolation of the patent.

Best’s Legal BattleBest realized that the warning on

Best keys didn’t provide true keycontrol and like a number of othercompanies, they had their engineersworking on a patentable design fortheir keys. Just a few years ago, theywere issued patents on some newproducts. They proceeded tointroduce the patent protected key byBest, only to be rudely challenged byILCO. ILCO challenged the validity ofBest’s patent and proceeded tomanufacture key blanks that wouldwork with Best’s new patentedproduct line.

Best took ILCO to court, and quiterecently, ILCO ultimately prevailedwith most of their challenges to Best’sissued patents. The current status ofBest’s patented keys is still somewhatup in the air. Only time will tell howmuch, if any, of the patents will remainin force.

Medeco has recently introduced aBest compatible core that claimspatent protection for the purpose ofkey control. I have heard that anothercompany may be on the verge ofintroducing a Best compatible corewith patented key control. Many ofthese products have been a long timecoming, so believe it when you see it.

4. The bottom arrow on the right shows one of the rollpins which holds the key cylinder in the lock. You willneed to cut behind these pins and pry them out toremove the cylinder. The black arrow on the top rightand the white arrow on the top left show location oftwo phillips screws that must be removed if you areremoving the lock from the column. This car has twoair bags, do not work on this ignition lock without firstdisconnecting the battery.

L ast month I told you all aboutthe new features that

Securitron has built into its DK-26touch pad and CPU board that wasreleased late last year as areplacement to the DK-25P. I alsomentioned that it would be difficultto improve on what I alreadyconsidered a great product, butSecuritron managed to make theDK-25P take a technologicalback-seat to the DK-26.

The DK-26 installation that I’mgoing to show you consists of fivemain components - at least for theapplication that I field tested this unitin. Photograph 1, is comprised of theSecuritron Magnalock 62-24, a PB2Enon-illuminated exit switch, a PSP-24plug-in rectified transformer, the newclearly marked CPU board and a DK-26 touch pad with its distinctive threeLED’s, (Red, Orange and Green)across the top.

This unit, along with two auxiliaryexit switches, was installed in a largechurch that had a day-care center. TheDK-26 was placed on the main

entrance door to control trafficthrough that door by admittingchurch staff (who had their owncodes) and by requiring all others toring the door bell (incorporated into

the DK-26 Touch Pad) to gainadmittance.

When I install a Securitron DK-26,the first thing that I install is the

touch pad. To do that, I first cut anoblong hole in the door frame with myDremel tool (See photograph 2.) Thishole will allow for the differences incable placement from one touch pad toanother. Next, I drill a 1/2” holestraight through the door jamb to theinterior. Photograph 3, is the hole onthe interior of the jamb, as well as the

mounting plate for the Wire Moldhardware and junction boxes that I usewhen installing an access control unit.

F rom left to right in Photograph 4, isthe process for mounting the DK-

26 touch pad to the door jamb. Afterdrilling the hole through the jamb, Ilocate and install the top mountingscrew for the touch pad. I then feedthe cable trough the hole to theinterior of the jamb, after which I slipthe DK-26 over the top mountingscrew (which is concealed by thetouch pad.) Push the touch pad uptight against the jamb and secure itwith the bottom mounting screw(Securitron even supplies tamperresistant security screws for thispurpose.) Cover the screw with theDK-26 decal that can be seen belowthe touch pad.

Photograph 5 , is the touch padcable coming into the Wire Moldjunction box on the inside of the doorframe. The small wire to the right ofthe opening in the junction box is my“pull” wire that I will use to pull thecable and other wires that go from theswitch to the CPU board up into theceiling cavity where I have located myCPU box and power supply wires.

Aneat installation can be achievedwhen you use Wire Mold products

to hold your switches and conceal thewiring on this type of installation. WireMold products are available from mostelectrical supply houses and somehome centers.

Photograph 7, is the business end ofthe PB2E exit switch. Notice thatthere are terminals for Normally

Open, Normally Closed and Commonleads. Illustration 1, is how a PB2Eexit switch is wired in a “REX”(Request To Exit) function. As youcan see, a wire runs from theNormally Open terminal of the switchto the REX terminal of the CPU board,and a second wire runs from theCommon terminal of the switch to the“REF” terminal on the CPU Board.When the exit button is depressed,

the Magnalock is released for apredetermined period of time.

Since the possibility exists thateven on a fail-safe lock (unlockedwhen power is shut off) an electricalmalfunction could cause the REXfunction to malfunction. Securitronrecommends that you wire the PB2Ein a “double break manner for freeegress. Since the PB2E is a SPDT(Single Pole Double Throw) switch,Illustration 2, shows how to wire theswitch for this purpose. The NormallyOpen terminal of the switch is stillwired to the REX terminal of the CPUboard, but the Common terminal ofthe switch is now wired to the “DCIN” terminal of the CPU Board ratherthan the REF terminal, and theNormally Closed terminal of theswitch is also wired to the C1 terminalof the CPU board.

When the exit switch is activated,the Normally Closed contacts

open which releases the fail safe lock.At the same time, the Normally Opencontact directly activates the REXinput. This de-energizes the lockcontrol relay which releases the lock asecond time for the amount of timethat has been programmed into theCPU. Consequently, if the DK-26suffers a failure, the exit switch canstill release the lock for safety. Hey!It’s really not complicated. If this ol’boy can do it, anybody can. Besides, ifyou get into trouble, Securitron has agreat technical staff to help you. And,the call is toll-free.

The next step, for me anyway, is toinstall the 62 Magnalock on theheader of the door jamb, and the“Shoe Plate” on the door. Securitronprovides templates with each 62Magnalock that you install whichmakes the installation of the 62relatively simple. The hardest partabout mounting the Magnalockmanifests itself when you have to dealwith a concrete filled header, but onceyou have your holes placed the rest iseasy.

Illustration 3, is how the 62 mountsto the header with “blind nuts,” theshoe plate mounts to the door.Securitron supplies the mountinghardware necessary to place the 62 onthe door frame. Photograph 8, shows ablind nut in place and a spacer platethat was drilled and taped to accept a62 Magnalock. Securitron supplies atool to install the blind nuts.

The next thing to install is the CPUBoard which is simple enough. Just

mount the board where you want itand then wire everything - the touchpad, exit switches and power supply-into the CPU. Illustration 4, is anoverview of the CPU Board and in myopinion, shows where the DK-26 has itall over its predecessors. Note that thetouch pad wiring is no longer “Bluelead to terminal 26”, etc., but, “Violetto Violet”, etc. Sure makes it easier towire things up as far as I’m concerned.Also note that 24VAC comes into theappropriately marked terminals on theleft of the CPU and the 24VDC exitsbelow. Everything is clearly markedand the wiring directions are easyenough to understand.

Once you have everythinginstalled, wired, plugged in and all butbuttoned up, it is time to test the unit.The first thing I do after powering upthe unit is to see if the door is actuallylocked. With power supplied to theunit, the lock should be energized andsecuring the door closed. The nextstep is to see if the exit switch willrelease the door. If it does, then

proceed to programming the lock. If itdoesn’t, then go back and check to seeif you have miss-wired something, or ifyou have inadvertently neglected tocouple a connection. After makingsure the lock and exit switch(es)activate and deactivate properly, go tothe programming portion of theinstallation.

S ince the DK-26 has much greatercapabilities then its predecessors,

the programming does take a little

longer then it did with the DK-20, 20+or 25P. The DK-26 is keypadprogrammable and the program I’moutlining here presumes that you havealready set the unit up with your ownProgram Code. (Securitron suppliescomplete, in-depth instructions forsetting the initial codes with each DK-26) What I outline here is how to addor delete up to 59 individual userscodes and is the programming featurethat you should teach the day-to-dayusers since they do not have to accessthe CPU to make any changes.1. Enter Program Code, followed bythe Bell Key and note rapid yellowflashing LED which indicates it is inthe program mode.2. To add a new user code, enter userprefix 01 through 59 followedimmediately by a 2 to 7 digit usercode. To delete a user, enter userprefix but DO NOT enter any othercode.3. End the entry by pushing the BellKey.4. Note two red LED flashes forconfirmation and note that the rapid

yellow LED flashing returns.5. Press Bell key to terminate programmode.6. Re-enter new user code and thedoor should open.Simple enough wasn’t it? A locksmith once told me that hedid not think there was much

money in messing with cam locks.However, I don’t agree. I think there istremendous opportunity for anylocksmith to make money in cam lockservicing as well as installation.

A bar manager customer of minerecently called and wanted lockschanged on eight cabinet drawers andhe wanted the same key for all eightlocks. Two of the existing cam lockshad a tubular key. The other six werekeyed alike and not designed to beserviced because the cam was rivitedto the plug.

The only logical thing to do in thissituation is sell the customer eightnew keyed-alike cam locks. I wouldalso take the opportunity to suggestkey retaining locks or high securitycam locks. This would greatlyenhance the profit margin for me aswell as increase the security for thecustomer. I would say this would befairly good money and just oneexample of how you can make moneyservicing cam locks.

There are a lot of cam locks inservice, some are wafer and some are

pin tumbler. (See photograph 1). Theyare used in mail boxes, chests, electricboxes, money boxes, wood cabinetsand file cabinets. Requests for serviceson the locks range from openings, keychanges, broken keys and lost keyreplacement.

The cam lock is quite easy toreplace. On the mail boxes, only a clipon the inside of the metal door holdsthe lock in place. A quick twist of thescrew driver removes the clip. Themetal door has a double D hole, it isformed this way so the lock can’t beturned in the hole. Most of the metaldoors with preexisting locks have thispre-formed hole.

Cam locks installed on woodendoors are installed by first drillingusually a 3/4” round hole. The lock isthen secured by installing a double Dspur washer that has prongs and alarge nut. (See photograph 2). Whenthe nut is tightened, the prongs on thedouble D spur washer dig into thewood and prevent the lock from beingturned in the hole.

On the inexpensive locks, the camis secured to the plug with a rivet andis not designed to be dismantled. It is

not advisable to drill the rivet todisassemble and service the lock. (Seephotograph 3). To make a new key forthis type lock, you could impression itor read the wafers.

The better quality cam locks have ascrew or nut which secures the cam tothe plug. This style can easily bedisassembled for servicing.

If you are doing a new installation,you will need to use the type of cam

suitable for the application. (Seephotograph 4) Three things areimportant on a new installation; thelength of the lock, the cam rotation,and the style of cam. On most wooddoors, a 3/4” hole is required, and adouble D spur washer is used to keepthe lock from turning. The length of

the cam is determined by the locationof the striker. This can be a ledge,frame, or divider that the cam wiil lockbehind. A striker plate can also beinstalled or a slot in the metal can bemade.

If you only occasionally install camlocks in metal doors, you willsomehow need to shape the hole in adouble D design (with two flats) toprevent lock rotation. One way ofaccomplishing this is by drilling thehole to the width of the two flat sidesof the lock case. You could thenproceed to hand file the hole into theshape of a double D.

Another option is to purchase adouble D punch from HPC. Thenumber for the punch is HDP-4,available through an HPC distributor.This punch was featured in the August1995 issue of the National Locksmith.

Photograph 5, is a dis-mantled wafercam lock. Note how the plug slips outof the case when the cam has beenremoved. This type of cam lock is easyto make a key for. Photograph 6 ,shows how the wafers extend abovethe plug when a blank key is inserted.To make a new key, marks are madeon the blank by pushing down on thewafers when the blank is inserted.The key is then filed at each cut untilthe wafers are even with the plug.

On the average, cam locks requirelittle investment to stock and onlyminimal skills to service. With thehuge number of applications for camlocks, there are lots of opportunities toupgrade, key alike, rekey and replaceexisting products. This can only meanmore profits for you.

Key Machines: Testing Their Mettle!Once again we’re taking the equipment you use everyday

and putting it to the test. Every locksmith has at least a fewmachines taking up valuable bench space, and its importantthat the machinery you use is as accurate, fast and durableas possible.

No, we didn’t let Marc or Greg blow torch, freeze, bath inacid or drop any of these machines from the top of theEmpire State building. We also hid the keys to the fork lift.(After all, we had to return these key machines!) However,in this article you will see that we put a number of keymachines to speed and accuracy tests. Read on and see howthey performed.

Key Machine Styles:Key duplicating machines come in three styles,

manual duplicator, semi-automatic duplicator, andautomatic duplicator. Each style of duplicator hasits own qualities of general advantages anddisadvantages.Manual Duplicating Machines:

This type of machine requires the operatorto hold the carriage and key vises or jaws,against the cutter and guide dog/stylus andmanually glide the carriage to duplicate thekey. One of the most appealing aspects tothis type of machine is the cost. Generally,manual machines cost less than theircounter-parts. The other advantage to amanual machine is the ability to duplicateflat steel keys. A flat steel key cannot beduplicated by most semi-automatic orautomatic machines. Automatic Duplicating Machines:

This category of key duplicators aregenerally the most expensive, but itdoes the work for you. Insert a keyblank, press a button or flip a switchand the machine does the rest. Thedesign helps to prevent fingers frombeing inadvertently dipped into thecutter wheel and provides a constantforce against the copy dog/stylusand cutter wheel, eliminating forcevariances from multiple operators.The drawback to automaticduplicators is that these machineshave a tendency to duplicateslower than manual or semi-automatic duplicators. Semi-automatic DuplicatingMachines:

The semi-automaticduplication machine is anattempt to combine the best ofboth the manual and theautomatic machine. Mostsemi-automatic duplicatingmachines hold springtension on the carriageassembly to provide for aconstant force against thecopy dog/stylus and the

cutter wheel, regardless of the operator. The operator willthrow a lever which will cause the carriage to glide theoriginal key across the copy dog/stylus and the key blankacross the cutter wheel. The operator controls the speed,and usually the direction the carriage will travel from thelever. Test Procedures:

Because everyone has different needs, these tests areintended to give the reader a feel for which machine may besuitable for their own requirements. Key machines are listedin alphabetical order.

We tested for duplication speed, key generations, copydog/stylus wear on the original key, visual duplicationresults, vise/jaw clearance, carriage travel, and RediLine®

500 watt compatibility.Duplication Speed:

This was accomplished by duplicating five key blanks. Allduplicate keys were shoulder gauged using key guides orguide forks, depending on the machine. Brass key blankswere used in all tests. All duplicate keys must work the lockor the entire test was repeated without penalty. A Lorimortise cylinder with a Weiser keyway was used. Timingwas from the insertion of the first key blank through theremoval of the fifth key blank.Key Generations:

All machines and cutters tested met or exceeded ourexpectations. We took a factory cut 5-pin Schlage key, withan original brass Schlage 5 pin lock cylinder, and usedSchlage nickel silver 35-100-C key blanks for duplication.The key machines were factory calibrated or were tested foraccuracy using the normal adjustment procedures asdescribed by most machine manuals. Calibrations wereintended to get the most generations of keys possible. Keygenerations continued until a duplicated key did not workthe lock. When the duplicate key did not work the lock, thatkey was discarded and a new attempt at that generation wasmade. If the second try at that generation worked, the testcontinued. If it failed, the test was stopped noting the lastgeneration of the key which operated the lock. After the testwas completed, the machines were again tested forcalibration and the complete test was again performed. Thebest of the two performances are given.Copy dog/stylus wear:

A brass key blank was placed in the vise under the copydog/stylus. The semi-automatic lever for the carriage returnwas shifted back and forth across the blank about 3/4 thelength of the key blade 100 times. The 3/4 key blank lengthwas necessary to show photographically wear on the keyblank. Measurements were also taken of the blade todetermine wear.Vise/Jaw Clearance:

This is the approximate measurement from the right sideof the left vise/jaw to the left side of the right vise/jaw. Itsintent is to indicate how much room is available to insert akey or key blank.Carriage Travel:

This is the approximate distance that the copy dog/stylusand the cutter wheel can travel to cut a key.RediLineR 500 Watt Compatibility:

The machine was connected to a RediLineR 500 wattgenerator. Did the key machine work or not?

Roll Out the MachinesESP 3000 Semi-Automatic: (Photograph 1.)This machine is the only one of the machines tested

which can also double as a purely manual machine. Withoptional cutter wheel, it can also be converted into a slottermachine by inverting the stylus (Photograph 2.) Its true

single angle cutter allowed for the best duplication of theGeneral Motors key. The gauge fork is permanentlyadjusted to within .001” spacing. Depth adjustments can bemade with the aid of an adjusting screw, after a set allenscrew has been loosened.

While this is the only machine we tested in which thecarriage did not lock at all, the machine cut well and traveledeasily during its cutting cycle. Every time a key is duplicated,the semi-automatic feature must be reset. The deburringbrush comes standard on this machine and a plastic coverenhances the beauty of the machine and makes for easycleaning.StatisticsDuplication Speed: 1 min. 57 sec.Key Generations: 10 (Photograph 3.)Visual Duplication Appearance: Very good. HPC 3333HQT Semi Automatic (Photograph 4.)The HPC 3333 is built on the 1200 Code Machine

chassis, however, the machine has been undergoing anevolution. It now sports HPC’s newly introduced 4-way jaws(Photograph 5.) The jaws have been stretched apartcompared to its double sided jaw predecessor toaccommodate larger keys, especially in the automotive field.While we conducted our tests using the factory installeddouble angle cutter CW-42HQT, HPC provides a CW-55K3Single Angle Kit, which provides a single sided copydog/stylus and cutter. With the double sided cutter, thismachine was the fastest duplicator we tested. It also was theonly machine we tested where the original key was placed inthe right vise instead of the left vise. Could this make it afaster machine for right handed users? The carriageautomatically locks when the carriage is positioned all of theway to the left. To release the carriage, push down on thecarriage knob and move the carriage lever to the right untilthe key blank reaches cutting position. Using the doubleangled cutter, start either from the left or the right of the keyblank.

The 3333 also provides for a tilting cutter head. Theappropriate cutter and jaw enables this machine to duplicateEmhart and Medeco high security keys.

This machine used a movable and adjustable key gaugefork. Tip keys were gauged by the use of clips placed in thevises. Depth adjustments could be made with the use of amicro adjustment wheel over the copy dog/stylus. StatisticsDuplication Speed: 1 min. 1 sec.Key Generations: 20 (Photograph 6)

Rytan 100 Semi-Automatic (Photograph 7.)This machine was a fun and easy machine to use. Our

sample included the optional deburring brush and a keygauge protector which protects the stylus side gauge fromcrashing into the stylus, thus throwing the machine out ofadjustment. Like many machines, the cutter side stylus isnot immune from the cutter wheel. Also included was theoptional cutter shield, this however, did not fit on ourmachine. Other accessories include a lamp kit and a slotterkit for flat steel key duplication. The jaws are double sided,but not like commonly seen. The jaw grips from the bottom.On a new machine, it may be necessary to loosen the jaws bymoving them up and down a few times by the vise knob. Alarge top jaw clamp knob holds the upper jaw in position.Loosening the top jaw clamp releases the top jaw forchanging from side A to side B, and no washers or bearingsfall on the floor or under the counter (Photograph 8.) Depthadjustment can be made with the use of a knurledadjustment knob, similar to the one on the HPC 3333.Spacing adjustment is made by moving the cutterhorizontally on the shaft. Finally, tip gauged keys and tip slotkeys are gauged by a truly versatile gauge fork. Kudos forthis design! Of the machines tested, this is the easiest toload. Lastly, although it won’t happen too often, this machinehas the easiest cutter wheel to change. There is a shaftbrake on the front of the machine - but out of the way ofnormal operation, - which will lock the shaft while looseningthe cutter wheel. Very easy to use.

The instruction manual is an education for the locksmithand is “locksmith friendly”. It explains why the machine wasmade the way it is and offers solutions to some inherentproblems. Our biggest concern is the wear of the originalkey on the stylus. Page 16 of the manual recommendsduplicating no more than five or ten keys per original key. thing I can say about this machine however. Great specialfeatures abound. The 4-way jaws grip the key without lettinggo. A lighted switch identifies when there is power to themachine. The machine automatically powers off the cutterwheel when the carriage is locked. The carriageautomatically locks when tilted back. The gauge fork will notengage unless the carriage is locked. The power will notstart the cutter wheel unless the carriage is unlocked. Thecarriage is adjusted so that it cannot cut into the jaws(Photograph 11.) This is the safest machine tested, not onlyfor the operator, but for the machine itself! One nearly has tointentionally put their finger in the cutter wheel while

pressing the deburring brush power button to injurethemselves.

Of all the machines tested, this machine produced thehighest number of key generations.

The machine includes a micro depth adjustment which islabeled in thousandths of an inch increments, making it easyto adjust the machine for worn keys. About the only optionalaccessories that are not included is a lamp and an upgradedcutter.

Included with the machine are replacement fuses. Thesafety features mentioned above utilize micro-switches and

The Von Duprin Chexit, is a heavy-duty delayed exit device suitable

for high traffic areas. When armed,depressing the touchbar sounds anaudible alarm and starts a 15 secondcountdown during which the devicetouchbar is locked. After the 15second delay is over, the device willrelease allowing the door to open.Other products offer an alarm thatsounds when the door is open, but in asetting such as a large departmentstore, this rarely gives store securitypersonnel time to respond before theculprit is through the door. Since theChexit prevents the thief from exitingfor 15 seconds, there is a muchgreater chance that he will be caught.

The Chexit is composed of a 98/99series touchbar device with asolenoid, microswitch, electroniccontrol module and alarm sounder.The solenoid physically prevents thelatchbolt from retracting until thepreset time-delay has expired. Theelectronic control module contains themain arming switch along with thevarious components required tocontrol all functions of the device.

There are two external componentsthat are required to complete the

installation of this device. The first,and most important, is a power supplyunit. You must use Von Duprin’spower supply. Use of any other powersupply will void the warranty. For asingle door application, use the MPB840 (See photograph 1.) The MPB 842will power two units. (Note: VonDuprin is in the process of introducingupdated power boosters to replacethese units; the MPB 840 is beingreplaced by the MPB 671, and theMPB 842 is being replaced by theMPB 672.)

The second requirement is ameans of bringing power into thedoor. The product recommended byVon Duprin is the EPT-1024 (See

photograph 2.) An external powertransfer cord, or a power transferhinge may be used in place of this.However, there is good reason to use

the EPT-1024. It is simply the mostreliable, easiest way to provide thepower transfer required for thisdevice. It is also extremely durableand highly resistant to vandalism.When properly installed, it will last formany years on even the highest trafficdoors.

The Chexit can easily be connectedto several optional external

components (See figure 1.) Thisallows you to customize yourinstallation to fit a wide variety ofneeds. These include an externalhorn, a card reader or other accesscontrol device, a door position switch,a latchbolt monitor switch, and anexternal key switch (to allow remotearming / disarming of the device).

The most basic application consistsof the Chexit device, power supply,

power transfer,and connection tothe building firealarm system.Life-Safety codesrequire that, inevent of fire, allexit doors allowfree and im-mediate egress.The logic circuitin the Chexitdevice will allowthis to occur.When a signal isreceived from thefire alarm system,the Chexit by-passes normaloperation andoperates as atraditional exitdevice.

The first step in installing theChexit is to prepare the door for

the device. The procedure for this isthe same as for a standard, non-electronic 98 or 99 series exit device.The only variation is the addition of ahole for routing the wire harness intothe device. This hole is located in thehinge side end cap mounting bracket(See photograph 3). Drill all holes formounting the device, but do not installthe device to the door yet.

Now you can locate and install thepower transfer. This is best done afterthe door has been drilled. If the powertransfer is located too high or too lowon the door - in relation to the wiringaccess hole - you will not have enoughslack in your wires to make yourconnections easily. By installing thetransfer unit after the door has beenprepared you can choose a mountinglocation (for the power transfer) thatwill allow you enough slack in yourwires to make the connections.

Now that the power transfer hasbeen installed, go ahead and installthe exit device to the door. Make sureto thread the wiring harness throughthe hole in the end cap bracket. Checkthe device for proper mechanicaloperation. Since the Chexit is fail-safe,it will operate as a standard exit devicewhen no power is present.

I f you have not already done so, nowis a good time to pull the wires for

your external components. Thefollowing wire sizes are reco-mmended. As with any electricalinstallation, longer wire runs requirelarger wire sizes. Remember, you maynot be using all of these components,so you may not need all of the wireslisted.

V on Duprin includes twoinstruction booklets with the

Chexit. The first is for installing thedevice to the door. The second is forall the wiring requirements, layout,and termination’s. This electricalinstruction booklet is laid outextremely well. It walks you throughthe electrical termination’s in an easyto follow, step by step process (Seefigure 2). Each step handles one set ofconnections. This allows you toconcentrate on that particularconnection without being snowedunder with information about theother options. Although thesetermination’s can get complex, theseinstructions make it as easy to followas wiring an electric strike, it justtakes a little longer!

When installing any electrical orelectro-mechanical hardware, it isrecommended that the connection toAC input voltage be the final one

made. Make all your low voltageconnections (and double check them)before making your connection to AC.This final connection should be madebetween the MPB 840 and an always-live AC circuit.

Be sure to check your localbuilding and electrical codes, in manyareas a licensed electrician must makethe final termination to AC power.Additionally, many municipalities havetheir own special requirements forelectrical work. The city of Chicago,for example, requires that all electricalwiring - regardless of voltage - becontained within conduit.

PowerWithin the MPB 840 power supply,

there are two terminal blocks - TB 1and TB 2. The terminals on TB 1, arenumbered 1, 2, and 3. The terminalson TB 2, are numbered 4 through 9.For this device, you will be usingterminals 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 only.

Terminals 1, 2, and 3 (TB 1) are forthe AC input voltage connections (hot,neutral, and ground). Terminals 4 and5, provide power from the MPB 840 tothe Chexit device.

Power TransferConnect the wires from the power

transfer to the Chexit cable. If you areusing an EPT 1024 as the transferdevice, simply follow the color codingand attach each wire to its match.Connect red to red, black to black, etc.If you are using any other product totransfer power to the device, consultthe wiring diagram in the instructionbooklet to determine which wires willbe utilized for your installation.

The following chart shows thefunction of each wire of the tenconductor harness:

The following is a list of theconnections from the EPT 1024 to thevarious options: At this point, you are ready to start thefinal assembly.

P hotograph 4 , shows the coverplate, bezel, control module, and a

1-1/4” mortise cylinder (cylinder notincluded.) To assemble, first slide thecover plate onto the control modulemaking sure to orient it properly (Seephotograph 5.) Now install the

cylinder, making sure that the redbezel is between the cylinder and thecover plate and seats fully into therecess in the cover plate. The end ofthe module without the cylindershould be closest to the end of thedevice, and the bottom of the lock’skeyway should be toward the solenoid(See photograph 6.) Test the cylinderto make sure that the cylinder canactivate the module’s switch withoutbinding.

Remove the end cap and bracketfrom the device. Support the device sothat it is not left with only the activecase to support it. Slide the cover plateassembly into the device about twoinches and then stop.

At this point, pass the orange two-conductor cable from the touchbarswitch under the control module andplug it into its connector on the end ofthe module. Next, locate the threeconductor cable attached to the

control module, pass it under themodule, and plug it into the connectorfrom the solenoid (See photograph 7.)Now, making sure that the power tothe MPB 840 is off, connect the ten-conductor harness to the connector onthe circuit board (See photograph 8.)

Carefully slide the cover plate allthe way in, taking up the slack in thesolenoid and switch wires as you go. Ifthe cover plate doesn’t slide in easily,stop and check for pinched wires andproper assembly of the cover plate.

Connect your AC input power andyou are ready to test for properoperation.

The Chexit has a built-in test modefor checking the operation of the logiccontroller and the connection ofexternal devices. It also has a suicidemode. If the logic controller detects aproblem, it will blow the fuse in theMPB 840 to prevent damage to theelectronics module. In this case, thedevice will operate as though it were atraditional exit device.

To test the Chexit, slide the controlmodule partially out of the device, butleave all connections intact. On thelower circuit board are eight DIPswitches. Push switch #7 to the ONposition. (these switches can be seen inphotograph 5). Turn the key to ON.This will start the following sequence:

1. The red light will go on for twoseconds.

2. The internal horn will sound fortwo seconds.

3. The external horn or alarm willsound for two seconds.

4. The solenoid will pull in for twoseconds.

At this point, the light and the hornshould both be OFF. If so, the deviceis functioning properly. You are nowfinished with the self-test. Turn switch#7 and turn the key back to OFF toexit test mode.

Slide the end cap bracket back intothe device and secure it to the door.Install the end cap and you arefinished.

Considering the complexity of thedevice, the installation is not thatchallenging. The components havebeen logically designed to simplifyboth the physical installation and theelectrical termination. The electricalinstructions save you time and grief bygiving you an overview of electricalrequirements and termination, thenwalk you through the terminationprocess one step at a time.

The next time you have call for adelayed-egress exit device, think ofthe Chexit from Von Duprin. Youwon’t regret it.

This months interview is with Dera DeRoche, owner andpresident of Alarm Monitoring Services, Inc.

How long have you been in the security field?Long enough to be able to say “remember when...?”

It’s been fifteen years. Alarm Monitoring Services beganin 1980.

Can you describe a little of the historyon how you came into this field?

In 1980, my husband, who was analarm installer, approached me withthe idea of starting a 24-hour alarmmonitoring business. That same yearwe went into business together.Because we didn’t have the capital tohire any employees, he and I coveredthe phones ourselves. I worked from 7a.m. to 7 p.m. and he worked from 7p.m. to 7 a.m. That continued for thefirst year and a half and eventually webegan hiring other employees.

In 1983 we separated. By May of1986, my husband and I came to termson a professional and personal leveland I decided I wanted to buy him out.

I couldn’t take out a loan becausethe company didn’t have any credit.My only option was to scrimp and saveeverything I could. Unbelievably, Icame up with the exact amount of thedown payment - not a penny more, nota penny less! Now that the companywas truly mine, I was determined to make this businesswork. Since 1986, I’ve increased my client list from 2,600to more than 15,000.

What has been the most enjoyable aspect of working inthis industry?

I’m a people person. I enjoy meeting and talking withpeople, listening to their thoughts and helping them. Aspresident of what I like to call a dealer-sensitive centralstation, I’m in a position to affect someone’s life and seethem succeed in their business.

What has been the most challenging aspect of working inthis industry?

Getting dealers to use new technology has been a realchallenge. We’re all in some way hesitant or afraid of

change. But we’ve got to take those first steps if we aregoing to grow our businesses and step into the future.Alarm Monitoring Services doesn’t compete with dealersand even offers free 24-hour technical advice so it’s reallynot hard keeping up with the technology or new productsat all.

What changes have you seen taking place in yourindustry? Why?

Probably the biggest change is inthe growth of the industry. Alarmdealers are more professional andprogressive today. They are no longerworking out of their cars but have up-to-date offices, many complete with faxmachines and computers. Licensingrequirements and the abundance oftraining and training materials almostdemand professionalism.

Another change is in thetechnological advances of theequipment. We’ve all seen this evenaround our houses in everyday itemslike TV’s, microwaves and CD players.Alarm equipment may be moreefficient today, but I think we’ve gottenahead of ourselves.

What directions do you think thisindustry is taking? Why?

The one word that best describesthe direction of this industry isintegration. That’s the future.Technology continues to advancetoward that goal. It’s not just alarmdealers, it’s the whole electronics

industry. What will emerge may be called systemsintegration. Whatever it will eventually be called, systemsintegration will encompass home automation, alarmsystems, access control, home theater, central vacuumsand much more. The time of an installer just doingalarms will fade.

How do you think these changes have affected thelocksmith?

Locksmiths are in the same position as alarm dealers.Both have to move forward in the direction of the current.Locksmiths have an added incentive to enter the alarmindustry. Who is in a better position to talk to customersabout their home and business security needs than theman they’ve called to change their locks? They alreadyhave a customer base and the opportunity for profits is

Just like everyone else, thelocksmith needs to stop being afraidof taking the first step. I don’t believelocksmiths or alarm dealers will existin the future in the same way that wethink of them today. Our industries

are fading into the past just like drive-in theaters and blacksmiths. Therewon’t be specialists anymore.Progress has taken over and thesituation has reversed itself. It usedto be that the best advice was to pickand direct your talents in onedirection. Not anymore.

What do you feel the future holds forthe locksmith and his role in security?

Entering the alarm industry is notas difficult as it sounds. As I’vementioned before, the help isavailable and the opportunitiesabound. Of course, another optionwould be for the locksmith to joinforces with an alarm dealer. Bothbring years of knowledge andexperience with them.

How do you think the locksmith canbest serve his customers?

I can’t emphasize this enough. Alocksmith can best serve hiscustomers by providing alarmsystems and taking steps towardintegrated services. His customersalready know and trust him. Mostcustomers would rather stay withsomeone they know rather thansearch out someone new. Byproviding integrated services, thelocksmith would save his customers,time money and possibly headaches.

E ver wonder who the largest lock companies are in theU.S.? It’s very interesting, but not surprising. In the top

five are: Kwikset, Master Lock, Schlage Lock Co., Yale, andthe number one spot goes to Securitas, (ASSA) with over“One Billion” dollars in annual sales. The sad news is that thelocksmith industry is still a very small percentage of theiroverall income. However, without the other markets theyserve we would probably have to pay $600.00 for a door lock.

T he National Locksmith magazine has joined SecurityResources as a seminar co-sponsor. I understand they

have wanted to get into education in a bigger way, so we willall benefit from this. Marc, Steve and I will be meeting onfuture plans and programs. No doubt the beneficiary fromthis will be you, the locksmith.

Itsprobably a Yale lock made in the early 30’s. The shackle isautomatically locked when put into the closed position. Q. I have a GMC Truck with a code N436. Don’t seem to haveany information. Can you help?A. Yes. This is the same series as the “D” & “E” series usedon American motors. Everything’s the same except the prefixchange. “Looks like another cold dayahead,” Don said, peering at our

outdoor thermometer mounted on theden window. Shivering, he pitchedanother log on the fire and reached forhis mug of steaming coffee.

A late January Arctic cold front hadcome blustering through the area theday before, plummeting temperatureswell below freezing, an unusualoccurrence in our part of the country.“You’d better dress warmly for thestore, today,” Don advised me.

“I’ll be all right as soon as I getinside,” I said.

“No you won’t. We don’t have anyheat, down there.”

“You’re kidding.”“Nope. The heater quit on us

yesterday afternoon. The unitprobably had frozen up. I’m sure it’llbe that way until our landlord can getsomebody down there to fix it.”

Sure enough, when I arrived at thestore the temperature seemed almostas low inside as out. The guys, stilldressed in their jackets and caps,huddled around a small electric spaceheater in the back. They were talkingsoftly, as if hoarding the warmth oftheir words.

I settled into my morning routine ofoffice work. Right off, I learned ittakes a special talent to type or inputcomputer information in fleece-linedgloves. Even punching in telephonenumbers can be a problem, but only ifyou care who it is you’re calling.When I placed a pen into my fleece-lined gloved hand, I began to developa whole new respect for Dr. Zhivago.Then the first service call came in.

“Okay,” I called to the guys, “I needa volunteer to go out to the collegeand open a locked vehicle.”

“How much colder can it be outsidethan in here?” Bob* asked, slappinghis body with his arms in an attemptto improve circulation.

“Better to be moving around outthere than to be standing hereshivering,” Luke* decided. “I’ll takeit.”

“Where’s Harry when we needhim?” Bob asked. He’s from up North,where it really gets cold. A day likethis shouldn’t bother him at all.

“Harry won’t be in today. He’sdown with the flu,” I replied. “I guessit’s up to us Texans to muddlethrough, somehow.”

“Figures.”

“W ell, I’m out of here,” Lukeannounced, taking the work

order from my gloved hand. “Be glad we’re not up in the

panhandle,” Bob called after him, “Ihear it was minus four up there, lastnight.”

“That’s nothing,” Luke shoutedback over his shoulder, “Minnesotahad minus thirty-three.”

His parting remark brought backmemories. “I remember one winternight when Don and I were living inAmarillo,” I murmured. “I had been toa class and was heading home aroundten o’clock. As I came out of thebuilding and walked toward my car,the north wind hit me straight on. Itwas one of those teeth-jarring blaststhat cut right through you, down-filledparka and all.”

“How far did you have to walk?”Bob asked.

“Not far. Thirty yards or so. Thebad part was, once I reached the car Icouldn’t get my key into the door lock.It was completely frozen over. It tooksome nice guy with a cigarette lighterabout twenty minutes to thaw it out forme.”

“Sure!”“No joke,” I said. “According to the

weatherman it was minus 65 degreesthat night, with the chill factor.”

Don poked his head around thecorner. “Are you telling tales aboutwinter in Amarillo again?”

“I tell you what, that night was thecoldest I ever plan to be exposed to,” Iadmitted.

“I don’t guess I realized it got thatcold in Amarillo,” Bob said.

“The saying is, there’s nothingbetween Amarillo and the North Poleexcept a barbed-wire fence, and it’sdown, about half the time,” I replied.

Don laughed. “I’ll bet you don’tremember the first time I ever tried toget into a locked Volvo, but I sure do.

Two hours I spent on that openparking lot in the middle of a SouthPlains blizzard,” Don said. “Now, thatwas cold. Made me wonder if that guywas right who said the only peoplewho would choose to be locksmithsdidn’t have both oars in the water.”

“I’ve done a little cold-weather work,myself,” Bob chimed in. You really

know it’s cold when you spray deicerinto a frozen lock and nothing thaws.”

“You think that’s cold, have I evertold you about the time when...?”

That launched them into their ownversion of “Can You Top This”.

Before they wound down, Luke wasback from his service call with asatisfied grin on his face.

“From your expression, I gathereverything went well,” I said.

“Sure. No problem.” Then Lukegrinned again. “I whipped out the oldopening tool and performed mymagic. The guy was mostappreciative.” He rubbed his handstogether in front of the heater andsmiled again.

“So, what’s with the Cheshire Catact?” Bob asked. “Did he give you a tipor something?”

“Like I told you, he was impressedwith how fast I got his car open.”

After a little coaxing from Bob,Luke finally told us the rest of thestory.

After completing the job, thecustomer turned to Luke and said,“That funny little metal rod is realcool, man.”

“Yea, especially on a day like this,”Luke had replied.

“No, I mean it” the customerreiterated, “somebody oughta make asmall version of one of those thingsthat I could carry in my pocket, in caseI ever need to get myself into my caragain.”

“They do,” Luke had replied as hepresented the bill and pulled on hisgloves. “It’s called a key.”

Harloc’s Repositioning ABoon To Locksmiths

The modern residential locksetindustry was established in theimmediate post-World War II era inthe United States when many oftoday’s major lockset companies wereborn and rose to prominence.However, within the last 10 years, thelockset industry has undergonesignificant change with the onset ofthe big box retailers. Companieswhich grew up with the locksmith andbuilding industries have experiencedmergers, acquisitions and a revolutionin the distribution of products to thepublic. Large retailers have becometheir most important customers, oftento the detriment of locksmiths andbuilders, the traditional backbone ofthe industry.

American Lock And Supply Winner:Lexus Tricked

My first adventure in Lexus Land,went like this:

The car was locked and the keyswere in the trunk. After unlocking thecar, the alarm went off and - as I foundout - the electrical system shuts downleaving the trunk release buttoninoperable until the system is reset.

My first thought was to remove thebattery cable and reattach it. That ideadidn’t work. After considering myoptions for a moment or two, I

wondered if by removing the wafersfrom the door lock and then turningthe lock with a key blank, I could“trick” the system into believing thatthe door had been unlocked by a keyand allow me to use the trunk releasebutton to open the trunk.

However, when I removed the doorpanel, I realized that all I had to dowas remove the electrical switch fromthe back of the door lock and thenturn the actuator with a pair of needlenose pliers.

The on-board computer thought akey had been used which allowed meto depress the truck release buttonand open the truck for my customer.

I have since found that some trunkrelease buttons may be pushed in and“locked”. You can still activate thetrunk release mechanism by loweringthe panel under the dash. The lockworks like a push-button desk lockand all you need to do is locate theretainer allowing the lock to pop out tothe unlocked position.

All Lock Winner:Three Point Progression

Progressing two unknown cuts tocomplete a key is usually a piece ofcake for most locksmiths. However,many locksmiths find it difficult toprogress three unknown cuts, aswould be the case if you where to usethe glove box lock to originate a firstkey for certain models of Mitsubishi,Hyundai and some others.

The easiest way to progress threeunknown cuts is to have a preparedprogression chart.

The following is a generic chart fora three space, four depth progressionsituation that might be encounteredon many foreign and some domesticautomobiles, light trucks andmotorcycles.

The asterisk(*) indicates cuts thatyou can avoid making if the MAC’s isonly a two or does not allow a one cutnext to a four cut. You can eliminateeven more combinations when yourlast known depth is a one or a four.

HPC Pistol Pick Winner:Two Is Better Than One

Here’s a tried and true tip that Icame up with several years ago forextracting broken keys from foreigncar ignitions, doors and trucks.

Use two spiral key extractors.Screw them down the milling groovesof each side of the broken key. Oncethe extractors are in tight enough tograb the key but not so tight that youcan’t pull them out of the lock, twistthe two extractors together (like atwist tie on a bread bag). You can onlytwist one time but that is usually morethen enough.

Not only does this “twisted” ideacause the extractors to grip the keymore firmly, it also moves any wafersout of the way that might impede theremoval of the broken key piece. On atrunk or door lock, I use a diamondrake tool to hold the dust cover open.By inserting it in the bottom of thekeyway and turning it so it lays flat, itdoe the job nicely.

To avoid unnecessary internaldamage, some safes are best drilledaway from their drop-in point whichmakes it necessary - using normalprocedures - to transfer numbers afterdrilling the safe. Here’s a simple wayto transfer gates (not numbers) to thedrop-in point.

First mark the position of thedrip-in above the dial ring with a felttip pen or scribe. After using whatevermethod you would customarily use toaccess the wheel pack, do thefollowing:

Cut out a small disk of heavy paperor cardboard (See illustration 1.) Cuta hole in the center and attach it to thespindle in such a manner that it willrotate with the spindle.

Use a pair of small Vise-Grip pliersor an emergency dial to turn thespindle.

Using direct sighting, an otoscope,borescope or flashlight, align the firstgate with the scope hole that youdrilled in the safe (it doesn’t matterwhat the number is). When you bringthe first gate into alignment with thehole, make a Roman Numeral “I” onthe disk.

Bring the next gate in alignmentwith the scope hole and make theRoman numeral “II” at that point onthe disk. Repeat the process with thethird (or fourth) gate and mark it “III”or “IV” as necessary.

With all the gates “marked” on thedisk over the spindle, all you have todo is “dial” the gates to the drop-inusing the same dialing proceduresyou would use if you were actuallydialing a numerical combination,except in this case you are dialinggates directly to the drop-in.

After dialing to the drop-in(depending on the type safe you areworking on) just retract the bolt orturn the handle and open the safe.

100 Silca Keyblanks Winner:All Plugged Up

While at a nursing home rekeyingsome Yale 8 cylinders, I must havedozed off while rekeying the secondcylinder because I inserted the plug inthe shell backwards. I quickly wokeup after I had turned the plug andallowed the top pins to spring intoplace!

The location of the pin chambersare such that the #2 chamber in theplug lined up with the #6 chamber inthe housing, the #3 with the # 5, andso on. The #1 chamber in the plug didnot align with any of the chambers inthe shell and the pin in that chamberwould not lift but a few thousandths ofan inch!

Since a working key could not beinserted into the keyway (because ofthe #1 chamber) I could not shim pickthe plug to the shear line.

My solution was to duplicate themaster key on another blank which I

modified by cutting off the bow of thatkey and filed the #1 cut down lowenough to pass the #1 chamber. Then,I inserted the modified key into theplug from the rear and pushed it inuntil it was positioned properly tocreate a shear line. I turned the plugwith a small screwdriver and removedit in the customary manner.

After re-inserting the plug properlyin the shell, I checked its operationand, since I do a lot of work for thisfacility, decided to put my “special”master key in a safe place just in case Idecided to take another nap whiledoing a future rekey!

[Editor’s Note: Raiford’s tip willwork. I know from experience since I’vegone to sleep “at the switch” a couple oftimes myself. Just for the benefit of thosewho might not have a solidunderstanding of master keyingprinciples, Raiford’s tip works best whenthe master bitting consists of all bottompins or when the cylinder is notmastered. Otherwise, when makingyour emergency key, you would have toconsider the pinning of each chamberand develop - by code - a key that wouldwork in “reverse” for chambers2-3-4-5-6. For example: If the secondchamber was a number three depth andthe third chamber was a number sixdepth (and so on) you could code cut akey to those depths and turn the plug ifyour key passed the #1 pin. It wouldtake a little calculating but you coulddevelop a “key” out with too muchtrouble. Or, you could pull a compatiblecylinder out of your “spare parts box”.]

Code cutting single sided GM keyson my Belsaw 200 presented problemsfor me since, depending on the depth,the first cut would often destroy theshoulder of the key.

I solved this problem by making aset of depth keys for that frustratingfirst cut. I made these keys by usingfactory cut keys as patterns (you onlyneed five keys for the five depths) andduplicating that first cut.

Now, when I have a problem key, Isimply use the appropriate depth keyand make the first cut on a duplicatingmachine and generate the rest of thecode cuts in the usual manner on my200.

Sieveking E-Z Pull GM Wheel PullerWinnerA Ceiling Organizer

I have found a solution to theproblem of where to store openingtools so they would be accessiblewhen you need them and not tangledand stuck together like a mound ofcold spaghetti. The first thing Ilearned was never to put those toolsinside of anything! I tried the PVCpipe and various types of caseswithout any luck. After trying nearlyeverything including a shadow board(but where do you put that?) I think Ihit upon the simplest solution.

My van has a hardboard ceiling. Idecided that I would try mounting thetools there. The problem was what touse to hold them securely in place andyet allow me to quickly grab the righttool when I needed it.

What I did was to punch holes inthe ceiling and use the little whiteplastic wall board anchors (the blue“lag” type or Molly type won’t work).The small ones cost about .31¢ eachand take a #6 screw which I used toattach a small Bull Dog clip.

The trick is to use the natural curveof the van’s ceiling to keep the toolfirmly in place. I installed the clip tohold the tool at its center point. Sincethe length of the tool requires me to“push” the tool into the clip with theends of the tool resting against theceiling, the resulting “bow” of the toolkeeps it firmly in place.

True, it required a certain amountof experimenting and “jiggling” to geteverything in place just where Iwanted it, but now each tool isinstalled above my heard, out of theway and easily accessible when I needit.

Prolock PK-15 Pick set WinnerSave Those Bottle Caps

Here’s an easy-to-make device thatI find helpful whenever working on alock where I need to keep the springsand pins in order. This simple devicestores and keeps the top pins andsprings from any cylinder separateand accessible.

Use contact cement (or epoxy) tofasten five or six soda bottle capstogether in an arrangement like yousee in illustration 2. After gluing orepoxying the caps, you can hold themin position by using a rubber bandwrapped around the outside of thegroup of caps.

By gluing or epoxying a piece offine grit sandpaper or rubber to thetops, you can prevent the device fromsliding around on the work bench. Bynumbering the tops from one to six,you’ll know at a glance where each setof pins go.

Sieveking Auto Keyblank ReferenceWinnerBypass The Roll-Tops

After spending too much time andwasting too many key blanks trying toopen a very old roll top desk, Ipromised myself that I would find abetter way to accomplish this onerousjob in the future.

Since discovering my better way, Ihave opened several of these desks inthe last few years almost as quickly asif I had an actual key.

The majority of these roll top deskshave spring latch locks that lock whenclosed. The key for the majority ofthese locks use key blanks similar toILCO’s #654 (see illustration 3a).

The tool I discovered was madefrom an old screwdriver and worksvery well on a variety of this type oflock. As you can see in illustration 3b,the screwdriver I used had a 3/16”shaft. I cut about 1” off the end(getting rid of the tip) and drilled a1/16” hole about 5/32” from the endof the shaft. I inserted a 1/16” roll pinabout 7/16” long in such a mannerthat the protruding ends were even.Then, I filed the end of the shaft toabout a 1/8” diameter.

To use the tool, I insert it full intothe lock while holding an openingpressure on the tool tip. I Work thepick tool clockwise and thencounter-clockwise (a back and forthmotion) and, at the same time, work

Tech Train Video WinnerNow, That’s A Wedge

A very effective and reasonablypriced wedge for viewing the inside ofcar doors can be obtained from yourlocal chain-saw dealer. Ask for thelongest plastic felling wedge that theycan order for you. Felling wedges areused to prevent the pinching of thesaw or for directing the start of thetree fall.

Felling wedges are made of highimpact plastic. They are very strongand not abrasive. My choice is madeby STHIL.

The model that STHIL makes isalmost nine inches long and nearlyfour inches wide. When cut laterally,one of these wedges yields threebright orange wedges that are darnedhard to miss when you leave one inthe window of a car.

You can drill holes in the side for ahanging loop so you can hang themon your tool board. I even drill a fewholes in the top to accommodate myBenda-Lite.

As an added bonus, they arewonderful tools for prying andwedging the top of car doors. Theirlong taper makes them handy formany other applications.

Jake's Grab Bag Winners:Gas Line Fish Line

My least favorite method ofopening a locked car (but sometimesnecessary as a last resort) is to wedgethe door and push or pull somethingto unlock the door.

For those times when there is nobetter way to do it, I have bought afive foot length of automotive gas line.

I cut off the flared tips andremove the threaded connectors.This gas line can now be used asa bendable tool that can be usedto trip whatever presents itself tounlock the door.I’ve used it on electric locks, doorhandles, rocker buttons, verticalslides and when the engine isrunning, to lower electric win-dows. Once when the keys werelocked in the trunk, I’ve pulledthe trunk release and twice, whenall else failed, I hooked the keysand fished them out.Depending on the make and

model of the car, I either bend a smallhook on the end or make a point. Icarry several wooden wedges ofvarious lengths and tapers and usewhatever is appropriate.

All Jammed UpAfter too many call backs to service

thumb turn mortise cylinders that hadjammed, I found a quick trick toprevent further problems. Most of thethumb turn mortise cylinders that Ihave installed, there is a spring loadedball in the plug to hold the cam in the

upright position. When the chamberover the ball gets full of dirt anddebris, the plug jams up.

To prevent this from happening, Itap the proper chamber (the holesalready there) with an 8-32 tap andseal the hole (after lubricating the balland spring) with an Adams Rite setscrew. This prevents the problemfrom occurring.

White It OutI have used many methods for

locating strike holes, but the best thatI have found is White Out (LiquidPaper). The water based type seemsto work the best as it does not dry toofast.

Just paint some on the end of thebolt, close the door and throw the boltagainst the jamb. Hold it for a fewseconds and retract the bolt. It leavesa nice clear mark where you need todrill the strike hole.

T he art of safecracking is everchanging and we, as professionalsafe technicians, must not be afraid

of reorganization and transformation. Thereally good safe technician will alwaysinnovate. Sometimes the new thoughtscome after a particularly difficult safeopening.

Within a weeks time, I was called on toopen two Knight money chests in twodifferent Clark gas stations. It seems that

when a new manager takes over, the first thing he does is tolock the bottom unit of the double safe door (Over andunder) configuration. Then, later he asks the formermanager the combination for the lower unit so he can totalup the day’s receipts. He then finds out that no one everlocked the lower unit because no one ever knew the existingcombination.

Knight Safe Company, makes a great money chest inmany different styles. They use a good grade of steel in theconstruction of the chests, and a really diabolical chip ormatrix type of hardplate. This is really good hard plate and isthe cause of death to many hardplate drill bits and manyhours spent on the TL-15 rated units.

The particular safe used in Clark gas stations is aninteresting unit. It is installed in the floor before any of theinside cabinetry is installed over and around the Knight unit.The chests in question actually extend below the floor level

about 12 inches. This is the depository part of the safe. Theupper unit has a hopper type element that deposits the dropsin the lower unit.

Both upper and lower safe doors use the GPC safe door,lock, and relocker configuration. GPC stands for GaryPrimary Configuration and is MY nomenclature. This styleof lock mounting was pioneered by the Gary Safe Companyand is in general use on many types of money chests.

The basic configuration is a lock mounted VD (VerticalDown) with a relocker mounted next to the lock. Thecombination lock bolt blocks the movement of the centerbolt bar. (See illustration 1) If the relocker is set off, it alsoblocks the movement of the bar.

The outside handle can be located anywhere and itactivates the center bolt bar. It is attached to the bar with acam and screw arrangement. Safes like Gardall, Gary,Knight and even Mosler use this basic configuration.Sometimes, with Mosler, the combination lock is mountedVU (Vertical UP), but the theory of opening and the relockerplacement is basically the same.

For some strange reason, I decided to drill in from thefront of the safe. There were fancy cabinets, computerequipment, and lottery machines located adjacent to thesides of the safe. Instead of moving this equipment, I optedfor drilling from the front. I will not make this mistake again.This article will deal with front penetration of this safe. Thenext Knight article will deal with the somewhat easier

Photograph 2, shows the dialof the Knight Safe Company.Since the lock is mountedvertical down, we know whereto drill for the end of the fence.This is at number 73 on the dialabout 7/8 inch out. The reasonfor drilling at the drop in-pointof the lever and the gates itmany fold. If, for some reason,one of the wheels is unlocked,the safe can be opened throughthis hole by either probing thewheels or by drilling off the endof the fence.

If you drilled a hole to scopethe wheels not at the drop inpoint, then you are in a lot oftrouble if the lock ismalfunctioning. You only wantto drill ONE hole in the front ofthis unit. Make it a multi-functional hole. You will have toreplace the lock anyway, so drillat the precise drop in-point.

Sometimes, with a MOSLERunit, I will drill for the scopehole. Because of the frontreading driver, there is NO wayto easily dial the safe lock open.The fence must be drilled off toaccomplish an easy opening atthis location.

The steel used in the door ofthe Knight Safe is great, Thehardplate is extremely difficultto drill as well. I called BobVolosing of Strong Arm Drill(California) and talked to himabout the large DBA (Drill BitAttrition) used on this safe. Hesuggested that the next time Itry to drill through this type ofhardplate, I use a step methodof drilling with hard plate bits.This means that one uses a 1/4inch carbide drill bit, thenchanges to a 5/16 inch drill bit,and back again to a 1/4 inch bit.I have not tried this, but willreport on this when I do. Bobstated that Knight Safes havebeen very good for hisbusiness.

Once the end of the lever isfinally exposed, dial open the safe, repair the hole withhardened drill rod and ball bearings, and install a new lock.Average time for opening and repair is in excess of threehours. Next time I will discuss the advantages and necessity

of side drilling and reading of the combination through thechange key hole, with a few tips that will speed up and makethe opening easy.

PRODUCT : The Borkey Rexamachine is a semi-automatic keyduplicating machine that has beenaround for a very long time. It ismanufactured by Borkey in Germanysince 1954, and is sold in the UnitedSta tes exc lus ive ly by DiMarkI n t e r n a t i o n a l i n C a l i f o r n i a .FEATURES: The spring-loadedcarriage is smoothly released with theright forefinger pullingthe trigger which islocated just under thecarriage knob. Thehandle which drivesthe carriage from leftto right has a con-cealed roller bearingwhich assures smoothopera-tion. There is nocarriage chatter duringthe key cutting cycle.

The heavy steel cas-ting is very important tothe smooth operation ofthe Rexa. The machine issolid and weighs in atabout 70 pounds. This isone of the heaviestmachines tested with a verystable feel.

Cutting depth adjust-ments can be accuratelymade with the adjustablefeeler depth gauge allowingfor very precise key duplication.

The lighted push button switch islocated on the left side of the switchhousing away from key filings and thestandard 110v motor can be poweredwithout modification by a Redi-Line500 watt model DA-12A. SPECIAL FEATURES: The heartand soul of a Borkey machine is itscutter and jaws. The 80mm cutter isslightly thinner than other 80mmduplicating cutters. This allows astraighter and deeper cut in the firstposition of keys like GM and Chicagowithout wiping out the shoulder.

The standard jaws are uniquelydesigned which are hinged at thebottom with a very simple con-vex/concave washer set under thewing nut. The jaw design allows foreasy operation which securely holds akey of just about any size or shape.The jaws themselves are posi-tioned almost

five inches apart and will hold thelongest foreign car keys even if theheads are very large.

The jaws have four slots allowingyou to slide in the flat or cutout tipstops which come with the machine.The cutout stops are used for cross-cut keys and Best style keys. The flattip stops have a variety of uses

including cutting keys withoutshoulders and tip stoppingkeys that have broken in themiddle. Though they areseldom needed, a set ofwires are provided to liftthe cuts of very shallowkeys above the face of thejaw.C O M M E N T S A N DS U G G E S T I O N S :The separate key gaugeaccessories are the onlyfeature of the Rexa I didnot like. This is a veryhigh dollar key dupli-cation machine thatshould find anotherway to gauge shoul-derless keys without

needing separateflat bars for key
