Dear Families of Immaculate Heart of Mary, For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word. On January 15 nine youth, eleven adults and myself will be attending World Youth Day in Panama with Pope Francis. Let us all at IHM pray for their safe journey and that upon their return they will be ready to go out and evangelize just as the apostles did. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Fr. Padre Quang

Don’t miss these upcoming Guest Speakers for Teens and Parents! Our Confirmation Program will be hosting a Nationally Recognized Young Adult Missionary Team called the Culture Project. Speakers are all recent college grads formed in Catholic Social Teaching and committed to a vibrant lived faith, Missionaries give dynamic presentations on the virtue of chastity, the importance of marriage and family, and the dignity of every human life to high school students and young adults. These Talks are open to ALL high school teens (grade 9 and up) and young adults and parents regardless of enrollment in Confirmation. Parent Talk: Wednesday January 23, 2019, 7pm in the Church - Human Dignity and Sexual Intregity - Missionaries will discuss with parents what the Human Dignity Talk for teens will cover and how to talk to your teen about the issue of Human Dignity and Sexual Integrity. All parents of teens are encouraged to attend. Teens will be having a simultaneous talk in the hall on Human Dignity. Parents of younger students also invited to gain insight, however we respectfully ask that younger siblings remain at home for these talks. Wednesday, January 23, 2019, 7pm in the Hall - Human Dignity Talk This presentation is crafted to engage students’ minds and hearts toward the inherent dignity of the human person. Through storytelling, real-life examples, natural law, and scientific evidence, we pose the question: What is it about human beings that sets them apart? We discuss the splendor of the human person and define human dignity as the unique value inherent to each of us. We celebrate the magnificence of human life with stunning images, state-of-the art footage, and fascinating facts. We address modern-day violations of human dignity and ask the question: How do we reverse this? We empower students to understand that personal virtue has the power to humanize. And we close with an inspiring story, inviting each student to join us in restoring our culture. There are no graphic images in this presentation. Wednesday January 30, 2019, 7pm in the Hall - Sexual Intregity Talk Why do happiness and love so often seem unattainable? Why do the self-serving promises of today leave our lives colorless, ugly, and unfulfilled? Here we open up the world of beauty found in a life of virtue, particularly, the virtue of chastity. We dissolve the old-world confusion about the virtue as a “restraining” list of rules and illuminate the freedom found in this lifestyle. We get real about the genuine struggles we experience as young men and women looking for love and happiness. We address the deeper meaning of sex, the purpose of our sexual desire, and our sexual identity as male and female. We share practical tips about how to channel our natural desires towards authentic love. We believe in the power we possess as men and women to make bold and virtuous choices about our relationships, and so lead a life of greatness. Friday, February 15, 2019, 7 pm in the Hall - Social Media Talk With the advent of modern technology, smart phones, and social media our world has changed forever. How do we navigate this new social landscape that no generation has had to navigate before? Designed to follow up our Human Dignity and/or Sexual Integrity presentations, this presentation will engage students in a dialogue about how to integrate virtue and excellence into their use of Social Media. We discuss how our use of media can either contribute to or endanger our personal happiness, our relationships, and the type of person we ultimately become. We share the great benefits to using social media, as well as how to avoid some of its biggest downfalls, such as comparison, isolation, inauthenticity, even habits like cyber-bullying and sexting. Through the use of stories, cultural examples, and personal witness, we invite students to consider their own use of media and how we can all utilize the incredible tools that our modern day offers to become a force for good in our communities and become people who leave a lasting positive impact on our world. (Parents invited to come and listen in to this talk as details of this talk will not be covered in the parent gathering on January 23rd) For more information on any of these talks please contact ihmyouth@ihmbrentwood. com

IHM goes to Panamá for World Youth Day 2019! With our Pastor, Father Quang Dong as spiritual chaplain, children and some participants from Immaculate Heart of Mary are attending the World Youth Day events in Panama, with pre-events in Costa Rica beginning January 16. As World Youth Day is fast approaching, it is important for them to spiritually prepare through prayer, so that their hearts and minds will be open for God’s purpose in their life during pilgrimage. In union with our IHM pilgrims, challenge yourself to take 15 minutes out of your busy day to pray with them and for them. Prayer allows us to worship and praise the Lord. It also grants us the opportunity to present our requests to God. Whatever your intentions, prayer always strengthens our relationship with Him. By welcoming this special time of prayer into your daily routine, you will be spending quality time with God and drawing yourself nearer to Christ. As St. Augustine exhorts, “God wills that our desire should be exercised in prayer, that we may be able to receive what He is prepared to give.” If you would like to support the youth, please see Fr. Quang.

Congratulations to IHM!! We ended 2018 with a new floor in the hall. Thanks to all of our generous parishioners with the planning of the Finance Council and Facility Council. If you have not had a chance to see the floor yet try to come by and get a glimpse. Don’t forget to look at the shades also that were put in the hall. 2019 is already being planned and we will continue to make sure our beautiful church is maintained and improved. Again thank you for your generosity and support to Immaculate Heart of Mary.
