But we have a lot of exciting waiting the rest of the year as well. In April we issue this year’s Europa stamp, where you can hear the bird sing using a free app. In June, four stamps are issued with Norwegian bicycle history and two stamps for the painter Harald Sohlberg’s 150th anniversary. And in the autumn, two stamps with pets will be issued.

In January, Norway‘s stamp No. 2000 was issued.

The EU has named Oslo the European Green Capital for 2019, recognizing the city as one of Europe’s most ambitious and proactive cities. In its role as a Green Capital, Oslo will help highlight the central role the city plays in living a greener life. Oslo’s motto for its year as the European Green Capital is “The blue and the green and the city in between”, which is also reflected in the beautiful stamp designed by Kristin Granli.

On the same day we issued two new stamps in the series with Polar motifs. This time the motifs came from Antarctica, featuring Queen Maud Land and Polar researcher Carsten Borchgrevink. The stamp depicting Carsten Borchgrevink is Norway’s 2000th stamp, an achievement that will be celebrated with its own miniature sheet in August. Magnus Rakeng designed the stamps.

In October 1969 oil was discovered in the Ekofisk field of the North Sea, and since then Norway has been an oil nation. The QR code on the stamp, that can be read with the camera on a smartphone or tablet, is linked to the website of Statistics Norway, which shows how Norway has developed over the 50 years we have had oil. Enzo Finger designed the stamp.

EU har kåret Oslo til europeisk miljøhovedstad i 2019 – og gir dermed byenstatus som en av Europas mest ambisiøse og handlekra�ige byer.

Siden 2010 har EU-kommisjonen årlig utnevnt én by til å gå foran som en inspirator og rollemodell for et grønnere byliv. I skarp konkurranse med 13 andre byer har Oslo blitt kåret til europeisk miljøhovedstad i 2019.

Som miljøhovedstad skal Oslo blant annet bidra til å synliggjøre byenes sentrale rolle i det grønne ski�et. I begrunnelsen peker juryen særlig på helheten i byutviklingsarbeidet i Oslo, både det at klima og miljø går som en rød tråd gjennom alle politikkområder i byen – fra folkehelse til integrering – og at Oslo har som mål å være en by som fremmer livskvalitet og setter menneskene først.

Dronning Maud Land, som ble annektert av Norge i 1939, er nesten syv ganger større enn Norge – og utgjør en sjettedel av Antarktis-kontinentet.

James Cook var den første som ga en nærmere beskrivelse av farvannene rundt det frosne landet «Terra Australis», på sin reise i 1772 og i årene som fulgte. Men det var ikke før i 1819 at den første skikkelige ekspedisjonen ble utført. Når det gjelder Dronning Maud Land, hevdes det at skotten William S. Bruce var den første som gikk i land her, men det var nordmenn som skulle bli de første til å drive kartlegging av området.

Flere nordmenn har preget utforskningen av Antarktis. Polarforskeren og oppdagelsesreisende Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink var en pioner – og la mye av grunnlaget for senere ekspedisjoner ledet av Robert F. Scott, Ernest Shackle-ton og Roald Amundsen. Borchgrevinks karriere i Antarktis startet i 1894 som medlem av en norsk hvalfangstekspedisjon, og han var en av de første som samlet inn prøver av levende, organisk materiale sør for den sørlige polarsirkelen.

At petroleumsverksemda skulle bli Noregs aller største næring, var det ingen som kunne spå på 50-talet.

Det nederlandske funnet av gass i Groningen i 1959 gjorde at folk fekk auga opp for at det kunne finnast hydrokarbon i Nordsjøen. Funnet førte til entusiasme i ein del av verda der energibruken i stor grad baserte seg på kol og importert olje. Den geologiske ekspertisen i Noreg hadde lita tru på at det skulle finnast olje og gass, men det kunne ikkje stagge entusiasmen etter gassfunnet i Nederland.

Det første oljefunnet som blei gjort på norsk sokkel, var Balderfeltet i 1967. På den tida var ikkje funnet lønsamt nok, og det skulle gå 30 år før funnet blei bygd ut. Ikkje før sommaren 1969 kunne Phillips Petroleum informere om oljefunn på den norske sokkelen. Oljefeltet blei kalla «Ekofisk» og var på den tida det største oljefeltet som nokon gong var funne til havs. I 1971 starta Noreg oljeproduksjon, og det var nettopp med Ekofiskfeltet at det norske oljeeventyret starta for alvor. I åra etter blei det gjort funn i verdsklasse.

Fullerton is located in California, a few kilometres north of Anaheim and Disneyland. The card depicts the Chapman building, which was constructed in 1923 and named after Fullerton’s first mayor. At the time it was built, the building was the city’s tallest.
