President’s Message
All,
I hope everyone had a wonderful 2011 and an evenbetter 2012! We had a fantastic holiday party at the HardRock. We raised over $10,000 for ASHRAE research!
I hope everyone is rested up and ready to hit the groundrunning. We have a great meeting scheduled forJanuary 10
th. Our guest speaker is Richard DesJardins.
His topic is on evaporative cooling (specifically coolingtowers) and he brings us 50 years of experience! Themeeting will be held at the Butcher Shop.
Another big event in January is the ASHRAE WinterConference in Chicago. It is being held Jan 21-25.Speaking of the ASHRAE Winter conference, I’d like tocongratulate Adam Bolduc. He is the $1,000 winner ofthe Winter Conference Scholarship! Our Chapter willsponsor his airfare, hotel and seminars for the meeting.

ASHRAE is always looking for new and better ways tospread the importance of being a member especially if youwork in the HVAC & R industry. For those of you readingthis article, I do not need to tell you why it is important (andnecessary) for you to be members of ASHRAE.
But you can help us recruit new members and spread theword of ASHRAE!
Since our member-get-a-member was such a success at ourNovember meeting, the Board of Governors has decided tomake it a standing membership drive program. In otherwords, any member bringing a non-member to a regularmonthly meeting OR tour and this non-member joinsASHRAE Society and the SD Chapter at the meeting, he orshe and you will have the meal on us…FREE. It’s our way ofsaying thank you for helping the San Diego Chapter grow.
In order to get your free meal(s), come find me, Eric Glatzl –Membership Chair, at the sign in desk (I’ll be “damn glad tomeet you”) and I’ll take care of you!
Remember, in order to get your free meal(s), you must signup for ASHRAE and give me your check at the meeting. Thecheck shall be made out to “ASHRAE” and shall be in theamount of $215.00. Filling out the application and sending inyour check at a later date will not get you a free meal I’mafraid.
Please note, no cash or credit cards will be accepted whennew members sign up. Checks only.

This program will cover 50 reasons a cooling tower may not be working properly.The reasons vary from basic engineering theories to economic considerations to
operating problems for both the cooling tower and the plant

Richard J. DesJardins has over 50 years experience with cooling towers andevaporative cooling equipment. He is a business owner and has represented severaldifferent cooling tower, heat exchanger and industrial equipment manufacturers,been a Principal Engineer for an air pollution control company, and designed andfabricated several different types of evaporative cooling equipment. He is the authorof cooling tower and psychrometric computer programs and technical paperspublished by the Cooling Technology Institute.

Update your Bios and Upgrade your Membership on ASHRAE.org
Have you been a member of ASHRAE for ten, fifteen, even twenty years, and your Membershipcertificate and card stills says, “Associate Member?” Wouldn’t you like that to say “MEMBER” instead?
You can, easy…for free…and all it takes is about ten minutes of your time. AND…you can do it anytime,anywhere with internet access. Here’s how:
1. Update your member bio / profile at www.ashrae.org2. Send an email to [email protected] and say the following: “I have an updated bio and
wish to be considered for member grade advancement. Please review my biographicalinformation at your earliest convenience.”
3. Wait about a month and receive your NEW certificate in the mail declaring your grade as“MEMBER.”
4. Frame new certificate and be the envy of all your co-workers.
Seriously, that’s all you need to do. It costs you nothing. You have to print and mail nothing. You haveto call nobody. Do it all online and via email when you have a few minutes and you’re good to go.
What happens once you become an actual member? Well, you can now become a Chapter officer if youso choose, or even, become active at a Regional or National level of ASHRAE. Exciting stuff.
