This essay is extremely well written. The significance and worthiness of the research question are clearly stated in the introduction and the student has done considerable background research to put the research question into context. The essay is well-referenced throughout. The essential chemistry is well explained and the student has demonstrated excellent knowledge and understanding. Particularly impressive is the fact that several possible different ways of analysing the concentration of hypochlorite ions are discussed and it is clear why the method used was selected.
The student has demonstrated considerable initiative and ingenuity in designing the experimental method by, for example, covering a standard cardboard box with reflective foil on the outside and matt black paper on the inside to help prevent UV radiation reaching the solution inside by both reflection and absorption respectively. The conclusion is succinct and accurate, and sensible and realistic suggestions have been made for possible further investigation.
