The Vortex power platform with 50 or 65 amp power conversion units (PCUs) is a modularpower system providing up to 2,400 amps of power for -48 volt systems. The basiccomponents of a Vortex power system include an intelligence shelf, which houses the meter–control–alarm microprocessor (MCA) and PCUs; expansion shelves for additional PCUs;and up to three modular distribution cabinets with rear copper bus interbay powerconnections. The system can be expanded to either side of the main bay.

The intelligence shelf can accommodate up to four PCUs, and the expansion shelves, alsohousing up to four PCUs each, can be added for larger load requirements. The intelligenceand expansion shelves are 23" (58.42cm) wide x 10.5" (26.67cm) high.

In addition to housing the PCUs, the intelligence shelf provides a powerful, microprocessor-based meter–control–alarm system which is capable of monitoring and controlling up to 56PCUs. The front of the intelligence shelf provides a 16-character alphanumeric display whichcan be activated at the touch of a keypad.

Vortex distribution is modular by row and position. Each distribution cabinet provides fourrows with a maximum of 96 positions per cabinet, 288 per system. Users can combine anynumber of 1-150 amp circuit breakers and 1-50 amp TPA-style fuses to customize powerplants. GJ-style circuit breakers and TPL-style fuses are also available.

Application

The Vortex system, powered with 50 or 65 amp PCUs, is ideal for wireline and wirelessapplications such as switch sites, co-location, huts and large CUE sites.

DistributionThe Vortex platform includesa modular distributionproduct line that can bedesigned with one to threedistribution cabinets - eachcapable of housing fourdistribution panels. Eachpanel is rated at 500 ampsload. The maximum load perdistribution cabinet is 1200amps. Each modular panelcan be configured with anycombination of distributionpositions, low voltagedisconnect and batterydisconnect panels. Distribution cabinets are front accessible, modular in design and are initially configured in the factory. Eachdistribution cabinet is 24.375”(61.91cm)wide x 33.25”(84.46cm) high x 21.5”(54.61cm) deep and is mounted in a 7’ highwelded construction relay rack. Circuit breakers and/or fuse modules snap into the multi-position distribution blocks toprovide for easy installation. GJ-style circuit breakers and TPL-style fuse options allow for protection devices of up to 600amps for both load and battery disconnect.

Intelligence ShelfA front access intelligence shelf houses up to four PCUs.Available shelf ratings are 200 amps (with 50 amp PCUs) and260 amps (with 65 amp PCUs). The intelligence shelf includesthe MCA, which provides a single point of adjustment for suchfeatures as float voltage, test/equalize voltage, high voltageshutdown and current limit adjustments for all PCUs in theentire power system. The intelligence shelf allows users to viewspecific alarm conditions, system measurements and systemsettings. All adjustments can be performed locally via thealphanumeric display panel on the front of the intelligence shelf or remotely via optional software and hardware. The MCAprovides local indicators and the ability to transmit various alarm conditions such as PCU failure, high voltage shutdown andAC failure.

Expansion ShelfEach relay rack can hold up to four front-access power shelves, eachof which houses up to four PCUs. The main bay contains theintelligence shelf and up to three expansion shelves. A complete three-bay system can be configured with eleven expansion shelves (48 PCUstotal) all of which are controlled by the intelligence shelf. Each shelfmeasures 23" (58.42cm) wide, 10.5" (26.67cm) high and 14.88"(37.78cm) deep.

Power Conversion UnitsThe modular, high frequency, switch-mode Vortex PCUs are the foundation of the Vortex platform. Plug’n’play technologyallows for easy system configuration. System capacity can be increased by simply plugging an additional PCU into an existingintelligence or expansion shelf – no adjustments or setup are required. The Vortex power system can house up to 48 PCUswhich provide load power, battery float current and battery recharge current. The PCUs are monitored and controlled by theintelligence shelf. The PCUs allow the user to appropriately size a power plant (50 to 2,400 amps) to meet specific applications.
