Strengths

Veterans Memorial is a brand new campus and we are fortunate to have new

equipment including five classrooms with full labs as well as a two computer labs

available by appointment for teacher & student use. All teachers have desktop

computers, sixty rooms have EIKI projectors installed and many teachers have

checked out laptops, MOBI’s, ELMO’s and printers.

Our greatest strength “technology-wise” is not in the equipment itself but lies in the

enthusiasm shown by the teachers, students and administrators who have shared

their desire to learn more about integrating technology into their classrooms and

lessons.

Areas of Need

Our greatest need at Veterans Memorial High School is in Professional Development.

We have access to many forms of technology, both hardware and software, and with

further training we will hit our goals of fully utilizing everything our campus has to offer.

Training Suggestions

Training sessions with the TST will be available bi-monthly during planning

periods.

Monthly video trainings (created by the campus TST and/or tutorials available

through purchased programs such as A+, COMPASS, Pearson) that are user

friendly and easy to follow, and can be accessible at any time so teachers can

view the tutorials at their convenience.

Quarterly Webinars specialized for each department.

Gather information on where teachers stand on all trainings via quarterly

surveys.

Budget Crisis

With the concerns over the BISD budget crisis, we at Veterans would like to propose

steps to take in order to save the district not hundreds, but thousands of dollars. These

steps are just suggestions that we hope will be considered in our quest to help our

district and our dwindling budget.

Each teacher shall receive only 1 toner cartridge per school year, any further

toner will need to be purchased by the teacher.

Xerox machines will be programmed in such a way that each teacher will be

issues an ID for the Xerox and a limited number of copies per 6 weeks to cut

back on paper costs and electrical costs.

The use of “Open Source” software will be standardized within our school to cut

back on licensing costs. Software such as Open Office in place of MS Office, PDF

re-direct in place of Adobe Reader Pro, GIMP in place of Photoshop, Google

Sketch in place of CAD, Dropbox in place of issuing laptops, etc…

Student supply lists issued at the beginning of the school year will include 2

reams of paper per student to cut back on paper costs.

Utilizing Moodle in place of summer school.

Offering of a remedial computer course to teach students who are lacking in

computer skills the basics of word processing, excel, powerpoint and

keyboarding.

We at Veterans Memorial High School strive to offer the best resources for our

teachers, students and staff technologically, environmentally, socially and academically

in order to give our students a better chance at a lifetime of success.
