Table of Contents:

Growing a business means arming an enterprise with the latest and greatest advancements in technology. That also means a plethora of challenges and growing pains, especially when the organization focuses on mobility.

The need to manage mobility first begins with overcoming the obstacles of digital transformation, and finding and deploying the proper solution. Equipping a BYOD or corporately-owned device workforce with the

tools needed to succeed is the first step; managing those devices, their security, and the enterprise’s data are necessary and of equal importance.

In this report you’ll find out why enterprises are struggling with mobile transformation and how implementing an EMM solution changes the entire scope of worker productivity and IT department workflows.

Mobile Mayhem: Challenges In The EnterpriseThe Information Technology department in any company is faced with daily challenges ranging from simple software complications to enterprise-wide infrastructure and network breakdowns. As mobility came into play over the last two decades, IT departments were increasingly strapped with more challenges that brought about security issues, immature and vulnerable software, and shadow IT of epic proportions. Implementing an enterprise mobility platform, whether it’s Corporately Owned, Personally Enabled (COPE) or Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) comes with inherent obstacles that require additional focus and attention on the hardware and information being stored on each device. So what are the main challenges surrounding enterprise mobility that need to be addressed in 2017? Companies have hit a high watermark in terms of mobile device use volume, whether it be COPE, BYOD, or even shift-specific devices that don’t leave the company’s property.

With more devices come more apps, which bring about more threat vectors and endpoints for hackers to target. Picture an office building with hundreds of windows and doors, all of which are slightly ajar. That’s how hackers see mobile devices in the enterprise; not as a single pane on the attack surface, rather the home to exponential threat vectors vulnerable to a breach at any given moment. While security remains priority number one, mobility has myriad other challenges, including native app development for employees, or mobilizing the processes and systems the organization has used for years. The rise of consumer apps has shaped the employee user experience, making way for a “get it done now or find a better way,” mindset. If operability includes too much complexity or latency, it’s a near guarantee those enterprise apps will be abandoned or, worse, bring about shadow IT as employees look to accomplish tasks through third-parties more quickly.

5 REASONS TO DEPLOY EMM SOLUTIONS 4Finally, the breadth of mobile devices that can be leveraged in a BYOD environment is massive, but brings about an absolute headache for organization’s IT departments. The various versions of Android have been stretched across 24,000 unique mobile hardware devices, while Apple is now up to iteration 10 of its iOS. Although production has slowed or stopped completely, some workers still find most comfort in using Windows Phone or Blackberry devices. Mixing those ingredients together, that’s a recipe for an IT disaster, when trying to support and secure such a wide array of operating systems and devices.

“BYO trends remain a key challenge,” said Eric Klein, Director of Mobile/Wireless Research at VDC Research Group. “In the case of BYOD, there’s a constant tug of war between data and devices. Devices are employee-owned, whereas data is company-owned. The rights associated with hybrid ownership can complicate BYOD tasks such as restricting access to official emails or performing a data wipe. In the absence of thorough usage and ownership guidelines, the advantages of BYOD might be completely lost.”

EMM is more than a set of letters: it encompasses the pillars for successful enterprise mobility, including Mobile Device Management (MDM), Mobile Application Management (MAM), Mobile Content Management (MCM), and even Mobile Identity Management (MIM). The full set, once integrated into the enterprise mobility lifecycle, can gear the workforce for increased productivity while eliminating constant pain points within the IT department.

5 REASONS TO DEPLOY EMM SOLUTIONS 5

Reason 1You Can Never Be Too SecureEnterprise mobility is no longer an idea or strategy. It’s now the way for companies to do business, and those who lag behind leave a noticeable space between themselves and the competition.

That said, BYOD and COPE will only expand in the coming years, forcing the need for enterprise mobility management solutions due to the intense security vulnerabilities associated with mobile devices. With an EMM solution, IT departments are able to monitor devices from afar and remotely wipe sensitive information without compromising the user’s personal data.

In 2016, three-percent of enterprise mobile devices were infected by malware (1), with companies spending as much as 13-percent of their total IT budget just to triage a widespread mobile malware infection. Clearly an enterprise-wide security breach’s financial impact depends on the organization’s size, but the cost to patch that security vulnerability in a reactive manner costs well into the millions.

Security starts with policy, of course. Having an EMM in place allows organizations comprehensive access to control policies across devices and software, ensuring adherence to protocols. (1: Ponemon Research Institute)

Reason 2App-solute ProductivityThe best way for employees to increase productivity and save time from dreaded administrative duties is to give them the resources needed to get the job done. In the land of mobility, apps are the yellow brick road that leads to success.

Through EMM, the IT department can provision apps with a single push, lessening task loads and responsibilities for end users. This also gives decision makers the ability to white list apps as well as create and distribute private apps built just for the enterprise.

“One of the biggest challenges with an EMM is pushing apps to users via the proper channels,” said Quinn Banks, Senior Product Manager of Mobility at Farmers Insurance. “Distributing an app via in-house app store, which delivers the same, if not similar experience as the Apple Store or Google Play Store, can be an obstacle for users.” That friction can be eased through an EMM, which may support multiple operating systems and allow users to take advantage of different app stores as well as through an in-house or native options.

5 REASONS TO DEPLOY EMM SOLUTIONS 6Reason 3Infinite Devices, One Control CenterThe IT department is drowning in responsibilities. Now that the enterprise has gone mobile and instituted a BYOD, or even a hybrid policy, the IT team needs to extend its arms even further to ensure all support is provided for various mobile situations.

Mobile management isn’t just about easing the burden on the IT department, though. It also helps administrators bring the latest information to employees on their mobile devices. A single dashboard that controls the entire enterprise’s mobile cache allows the IT administrators to make fluid decisions in an always-on, scalable format.

More than one-third of enterprises are allowing more than one mobile OS across either BYOD or COPE platforms (2), thus creating a need for extended support. A central console will give administrators easy access into provisioning and de-provisioning devices and apps, visibility into which operating systems are running most efficiently and how to troubleshoot any problems, as well as device security. (2: Enterprise Mobility Exchange, Industry Insight Report, July 2017)

Reason 4Visibility Is Key Mobile devices in the enterprise don’t always have to be handled by a user. In the new wave of IoT, connected “things” are everywhere, many of which are mobile devices constantly tapping into the enterprise network.

Those devices also need to be managed, and now more than ever. More than two-thirds of IT executives say they’re either strategizing how to best address a connected enterprise or have already begun implementing initiatives to address IoT (3). Without managing mobility, which now includes the omnipresent IoT, enterprises will be lost in a sea of confusion.

An EMM dashboard allows IT to complete mobile software deployments from a single console, allowing visibility into individual devices throughout the landscape. On the other end of the spectrum, that same control functionality is enabled when the need to quarantine a device is in order.

That enterprise data is coming from everywhere, too. As users look at data within an app, it could be living on their own device, in the cloud, or in transit to or from another device. Visibility through EMM lets administrators see data at rest and data in motion whether it’s in the cloud or sitting on a piece of hardware in a different part of the country.

That same visibility can help reduce costs when data shows actual usage from each device, giving administrators decision-making tools when considering the decommissioning of equipment. (3: Enterprise Mobility Exchange, Industry Insight Report, July 2017)

5 REASONS TO DEPLOY EMM SOLUTIONS 7Reason 5Automation Drives InnovationClick of a button. The term is often overused, but in EMM strategies it’s the real deal. With a centralized dashboard, deploying private or public apps, security updates, or even general content can be done with a mouse click. Gone are the days of individually installing software and drivers onto dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of devices for the sake of uniformity.

Consider this: the company’s employees work under a unified telecom plan through the business’s carrier of choice. Oftentimes, users will surpass allotted data and force overage charges onto the company while either party is unaware.

Automation within the EMM platform can either alert the user or administrator, or even upgrade that employee to the next service tier if necessary to avoid additional charges.

While mobile devices continue to proliferate in the enterprise, newer technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are making their way through the IT channels. AI will soon become a mainstay in the business world to help enhance worker productivity, and be used as an automation tool within EMM to calculate data usage or geolocation to stop overages or security threats before it’s too late.

The Road AheadThe need for EMM is growing by the day, forcing IT departments to decide which solutions fit their current strategy.

“EMM provides a platform of checks and balances when it comes to wrapping, testing, and ensuring the proper delivery to an end user,” said Banks. “More attention needs to be placed on how devices and apps are secured. Mobile apps are capable of collecting gigabytes of data; however if that data is not properly analyzed it’s just wasted”

What was once considered an inner-battle between IT and the employee over mobile device versus security versus productivity is no more. Implementing an EMM solution not only simplifies the support required of the tech executives, but keeps corporate data secure while enabling employees the ability to conduct their regular workflows without interruption.

“Consumerization trends have created numerous challenges for IT organizations,” Klein said. “One of the persistent challenges for CIOs is securing business data. The number of organizations that are vulnerable to data leakage continues to grow; as unauthorized use of personal file sharing services becomes a routine practice for a larger segment of the workforce. Unfortunately, the number of threats continues to grow: device theft, use of unapproved mobile applications, and lack of password protection are some of the key contributors to data leakage and loss.” In addition, and likely the most beneficial aspect of EMM to employees, is keeping personal and professional identities separate. Enjoying the ability to work seamlessly in a silo environment on the same device where personal data rests – but never having to worry about the two intersecting – brings peace of mind to the workforce, and drastically reduces liability for the IT department. In an increasingly-mobile world, companies large and small can’t afford not to deploy an EMM suite in their enterprise.
