5-Minute Check How many vertices does a sphere
have? How many faces does a cylinder

How many faces, edges, and vertices?
Name a solid figure that has 5 faces, 8 edges, and 5 vertices.
Plane Figures
By Mr. Bales
Objective
By the end of the lesson, you will be able to identify, describe, and classify plane figures.
Standard 4MG3.0 - Students demonstrate an understanding of plane and solid geometric objects and use this knowledge to show relationships and solve problems.
Introduce
Let’s look at shapes that do not have curved surfaces.
How many faces does this solid have?
Are the faces all the same shape? What is the shape of the face
called? What is the shape of this face
called?
Teach
What do you call a plane figure with 3 sides?
4 sides?5 sides?6 sides?8 sides?These are all polygons. A polygon
is a closed plane figure that has three or more line segments called sides.
Let’s hear from our dear friend Mrs.
Verughese!!

Properties of Polygons
A polygon is made up of line segments.
The sides meet at endpoints to form angles.
The number of sides is the same as the number of angles and vertices.
All sides of a polygon must be connected end to end.
No two sides may touch except at a vertex.
A polygon has to have at least three sides.
Has only one inside part.
Let’s Play Name That Polygon I will think of a polygon. As a table
group, you will bid on how many clues you will need in order to figure out my polygon. The team with the lowest bid wins the chance to try to identify the polygon with that number of clues. For example, if a team bids 3 clues, I might give you the following clues for a square:
1. The polygon has four sides. 2. It has four right angles. 3. It has at least three equal sides.
