Some diesel available in the UK may contain a proportion of blended biofuel. This is likely to become more common as the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, to be introduced in 2008/9, will require transport fuel suppliers to ensure a proportion of their sales are from renewable sources. Fermentation is used to produce ethanol, methanol and butanol from substrates such as maize and corn. A process called transesterification is used to convert animal fats and vegetable oils into biodiesel. Provided the raw material used in these processes is farmed or collected i n a sustainable manner, biofuels offer a convenient, low carbon, alternative to conventional transport fuels. Liquid biofuels

Liquid biofuels can be used to substitute fossil fuels such as diesel and

petrol. Some diesel available in the UK may contain a proportion of blended biofuel. This is likely to become more common as theRenewable Transport Fuel Obligation, to be introduced in 2008/9, willrequire transport fuel suppliers to ensure a proportion of their salesare from renewable sources. Fermentation is used to produce ethanol, methanol and butanol from substrates such as maize and corn.A process called transesterification is used to convert animal fats and

vegetable oils into biodiesel. Provided the raw material used in these

processes is farmed or collected in a sustainable manner, biofuelsoffer a convenient, low carbon, alternative to conventional transportfuels.
