DRAWING NEAR TO GOD

CONFESSION

PSALM 1111 Praise the LORD!

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart,in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

2. Great are the works of the LORD,studied by all who delight in them.

3 Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.

4 He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;the LORD is gracious and merciful.

5 He provides food for those who fear him;he is ever mindful of his covenant.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works,in giving them the heritage of the nations.

7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;all his precepts are trustworthy.

8 They are established forever and ever,to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

9 He sent redemption to his people;he has commanded his covenant forever.Holy and awesome is his name.

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

Merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep.

We have followed too much the schemes and desires of our ownhearts, and have broken your holy laws.

THE PERFECT WISDOM

We have left undone what we ought to have done, and we havedone what we ought not to have done. Yet, good Lord, have mercyon us; restore those who repent, according to the promises declaredto us through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Grant, merciful Father, for his sake, that from now on, we may livegodly and obedient lives, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

1. The perfect wisdom of our God,revealed in all the universe:All things created by His hand, and held together at His command. He knows the mysteries of the seas, the secrets of the stars are His;he guides the planets on their way,and turns the earth through another day.

2. The matchless wisdom of His ways, that mark the path of righteousness;his word a lamp unto my feet, his Spirit teaching and guiding me.And oh, the mystery of the cross, that God should suffer for the lostso that the fool might shame the wise, and all the glory might go to Christ!

3. Oh grant me wisdom from above,to pray for peace and cling to love, and teach me humbly to receivethe sun and rain of Your sovereignty. Each strand of sorrow has a placewithin this tapestry of grace;so through the trials I choose to say:“Your perfect will in your perfect way.” Stuart Townend

HEARING GOD'S WORD

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hasblessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenlyplaces,4 just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world tobe holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us foradoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the goodpleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freelybestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemptionthrough his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according tothe riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom andinsight 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, accordingto his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for thefullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven andthings on earth. 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him whoaccomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so thatwe, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for thepraise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard the wordof truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, weremarked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledgeof our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to thepraise of his glory.

39 He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives;and the disciples followed him. 40 When he reached the place, hesaid to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me;yet, not my will but yours be done.”

Sermon Michael Jensen

Prayers for God's World Simon Breakspear

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our dailybread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead usnot into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now andforever. Amen.

Creed

43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave himstrength. 44 In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweatbecame like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceivedby the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under PontiusPilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to thedead.

On the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended intoheaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there hewill come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communionof saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, andthe life everlasting. Amen.
