Ways & Means Joy Finley The overnight stay at Benbow Inn with the round of golfgift certificate, donated by Jack McDonald, was won by our Ways and Means chair, JoyFinley! She has since beat a hasty retreat to Hawaii!! A second prize, a large Dieffen-

bachia, kindly donated by Sarah Bogenreif, was won by JoAnn Kaney. The Opportunity Draw-ing made $320. The plant sale profited by $68.10.

At our May 19 meeting there will be opportunity drawings for May baskets & other surprises.Bring your spare change!

Our Guest Speaker: We see the signs in our streets: Yes, on T vote localcontrol. It sounds reasonable, but, according to our Guest Speaker, RobertZigler, Measure T strikes at the core of the Democratic principle of

Freedom of Speech. Those against Measure T describe it as patently unfair,unconstitutional, surreptitious and underhanded. Dont miss our meeting on Friday 19 th May,when Robert Zigler will address us on this issue and of his concerns on the undermining ofThe Constitution of The United States.

Robert A. Zigler, an attorney at law with offices in Fortuna, specializes in Estate Planning,Wills, Trusts, Probate, and Real Property law, and does some business law. He has practicedlaw in Humboldt County for 29 years. Through his love for Political Theory, he has studiedmost forms of government in existence in the world today.

What a wonderful turnout we had at our last meeting for the big debate for the office ofDistrict 4 Supervisor! With the Primary Electionstaking place on June 6th, see Its all aboutVoting on page 6.

ERWF also has its own primary the election of a nominating committee. Thecommittees first step will be to nominate one officer for each elective office (See our 2006ERWF Elected Officers, p. 2). If you are interested in being on the committee, please call me.

The Rhody Parade has come and gone see our pictures on pages 4 & 5 Thank you

again to Nilsen Company for the flatbed, hay bales and generator; Sherwood Forest Nursery,Westgate Nursery, and Harper Motors; our ERWF ladies for signs and support and their menfolk for muscles; the Military representatives & their Patriotic music CD - they were delighted tobe invited to join us on our float; Abraham Lincoln, parents and children, Madison Powers forthe balloon dcor; & all the enthusiasm displayed while we greeted onlookers and waved ourAmerican flags en route. We won the Rhododendron Parade Community trophy for 2nd place.We have followed up with thank you notes, and with delicious cookies baked by our Chairmanof Membership, Margaret Stafford.

Correction!! In our April issue I mentioned the wonderful address at the Advocacy workshopon the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act by U.S. Attorney, Scott McGregor... Oops! I reversed his name inthe article! It should have been McGregor Scott! My apologies to Greg and to his parents, ourown local Jerry and Mary Scott! We had a chuckle about that. McGregor Scott grew up in thisarea and some of you will remember him. Thank you for the phone call Jerry and thank you for

APRIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTSJoAnn Kaney, Recording Secretary

The April 21, 2006 meeting in the Evergreen Room of the Red Lion Inn was attended by 105 members and guests.

President Lesley Craig introduced candidates for Humboldt County 4

th

district Supervisor, Nancy Flemming and incum-bent Bonnie Neely and set the ground rules for the debate. The candidates alternated answering eight questions posedby Pres. Lesley with time for rebuttal. Many areas were debated such as affordable housing, campaign finance reformand Balloon Track development. Several members of the media were present to record the responses.

A motion was made and passed by a show of hands to move the monthly meetings to the third Thursday of themonth. This new schedule will allow us to use the Evergreen Room on a permanent basis. This change will take effecton June 16, 2006.

Chaplain Chair, Rita OConnell, announced May 4th as National Day of Prayer.

Does one size fit all? Would the only supermarket intown sell the best and freshest products? Would theonly hotel provide the most relaxing amenities? Andwhat if there was only one newspaper? Would it reportthe news without trying to slant the readers opinions orwould it print letters to the editor from the wide spectrumof opinions?

For the longest time, Humboldt County residents had

no real choice in selecting a local, daily newspaper.Increasingly, it became easier to believe that theopinions and slants on stories were the majority views.Thankfully, those days are over. The new kid on theblock, The Eureka Reporter, is giving The TimesStandard some well-deserved, friendly competition.

Competition keeps everyone on their toes and moreconscious of their end product! My family especially en-joys comparing the same events from two different per-

spectives each morning. How refreshing! Eurekas year-long sesquicentennial celebration and the historical,eyewitness accounts of the 1906 earthquake havemade for some interesting reading.

Next week, with Easter Vacation Week and STARTest Week behind us, Ill introduce both newspapers tomy students for a specific purpose. I want to show themthat there IS more than one opinion on any number oftopics. Reading two articles about the same event willhelp students work on critical thinking skills and debat-ing the merits of each story.

Numerous polls have expressed displeasure without lax border security and illegal immigration, even though there is

a concerted effort on the part of some questionable organizations to push a new immigration policy onto the legal citi-zens of America.

Those wanting the Federal Government to get tougher on illegal immigration 80%

Those who oppose making it easier to become an American citizen 62%

The number who do not want immigrants to be permitted to have drivers licenses 72%

It was discovered that 75% favor major penalties on employers of illegal immigrants.

The worry that illegal immigrants increase the likelihood of terrorism 70%

Those who believe the White House and Congress should place securing our borders as a top priority - 92%.

So we have to ask, why, if these polls are correct, does Congress seem so reluctant to do anything about illegalimmigration?

The answer of course, has to be politics. The DEMOCRATS look at illegal aliens as an easy way to pad their vote totalsand their philosophy requires victims and a dependent population. REPUBLICANS tend to be hesitant to crack downbecause they fear alienating the Hispanic vote and some claim more Republicans are in positions to hire illegals at lowwages.

No matter the ill-conceived reasons for inaction, our Republican leaders and all Americans should face up to the fact thatthere is a definite crime problem relating to illegals and they are causing a tremendous strain on our health care system.
