the same spirit in the year to come. This issue will provide you selected topics and information re-

lated to environmental activities covering whole Kosovo. Once again, we would like to take this

Efficient waste management or lack of it - is

one of the biggest environmental issues in Kos-

ovo. Currently, the largest amount of waste

goes to landfills, and only a small part is being

re-used or re-cycled. However, there are vari-

ous initiatives, in particular initiated by private

businesses to sort and re-cycle waste and to

re-use it. Such efforts equally include individual

initiatives to raise public awareness in order to

improve minimize our waste loads.

One of these individuals is artist Skënder

Boshnjaku. In addition to his career as a neuro-

psychiatrist, he has been holding visual exhibi-

tions since 1974. He is focused on urban art,

graffiti and heraldic. The special feature of his

art involves a collection of artworks titled

Eco&Garbage. Art, which is made using waste

to create artistic work. Apart from the fact that

his works are very original and rare, such

works also bear the message how artists can

contribute to raise public awareness about

environment protection. For his unique style

and contributions for the protection of the envi-

ronment through the art of garbage, Skënder

Boshnjaku has been awarded the certificate of

gratitude “Honored Ambassador of the Environ-

ment” by Bells Environmental Movement.

As part of the efforts to promote mountain

tourism, the Center for Sustainable Mountain

Education (CSME) was recently opened in the

city of Peja. The Center is located in Haxhi

Zeka’s Mill, a cultural and historical monu-

ment. The main goal of the Center is to pro-

mote natural and cultural heritage of Rrafshi i

Dukagjinit. Sustainable nature tourism has

great potentiality in Kosovo, believes Fa-

tos Lajçi from Environmental NGO ERA.

Municipality of Kaçanik is cleaning polluted

river beds and removing waste from illegal

dumpsites with the support of World Bank and

Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare. The

activity brings not only good news for the envi-

ronment but also helps people in difficult un-

employment situations. In addition to improv-

ing the environmental state of the municipal-

ity, the project generates employment and

reduces poverty. The project has strong social

commitment, 70 % of the employees were

hired based on the criteria of unemployment

and difficult social situation.

Neredime riverbed section that flows through

the city of Kaçanik has now been cleaned, and

the work continues cleaning the rest of the

riverbed and removing illegal landfills in the

city.

This initiative shows, how in its best environ-

mental protection can promote stronger soci-

ety. Labor intense “green jobs” can help unem-

ployment situation by creating new job oppor-

tunities especially for the people lacking an en-

try point to the job markets.

FAST FACTS

◊ 21 caves of natural

value have been

founded in Kosovo.

Currently, only 7 are

protected by law.

◊ Kosovo Environ-

mental Agency has

identified 110 con-

taminated sites (hot

spots), considered to

be sensitive environ-

mental sites, with

further 28 potential

environmental hot-

spots founded in the

territory of Kosovo.

◊ The largest amount

of pesticides in Kos-

ovo is used in the agri-

culture sector, about

89%, in the farming

and 3.5% in the vet-

erinary sector, 3.3% in

the municipal hygiene

sector and around 3%

in the food industry .

ERA strives to satisfy the delicate balance be-

tween the growth of Ecotourism and the obser-

vance of good practices that will ensure the

sustainability of the environment we are explor-

ing. In their environmental education programs

- both formal and informal– ERA spreads perti-

nent knowledge about principles such as “Pack

In Pack Out'“ and “Leave No Trace”.

ERA’s initiative is a good example for invest-

ments for nature tourism. Fatos Lajçi would

like to see also more institutional support for

the development and promotion of sustainable

tourism. The Municipality of Peja has already

welcomed the initiative. The purpose is to use

the natural potential of the Municipality of Peja

to develop mountain tourism and integrate the

local community in its development.

Trepça Mining & Metallurgical Complex was

once the backbone of the Kosovo economy - and

mining was Kosovo’s premier industry. At the

same time, operation of the Trepça complex has

left a legacy of large volumes of toxic industrial

wastes, acid effluents, dust emission that pose a

serious threat to the population living in nearby.

To address that Ministry of Environment and

Spatial Planning, Ministry of Economic Devel-

opment, Municipality of Mitrovica and Trepça

Company in partnership and supported by

UNDP organized a Conference on Industrial

Waste Management for Trepça Complex aiming

at:

• Higher prioritization of Trepça environ-

mental issues within Kosovo’s overall po-

litical and development agenda

• Understanding the environmental and hu-

man health impacts from the industrial

wastes

• better coordination and understanding of all

stakeholders plans and activities

exchange of best practices of rehabilitation

linking the of environmental mitigation with the

economic development

validation set of immediate and long term inter-

ventions, and consensus on a common ac-

tion plan for establishing formal coordina-

tion structure between development actors,

institutions and industry

Participants of the conference acknowledged

that Kosovo does not deserve unsustainable de-

velopment based on short term thinking “grow

your economy first and clean up later” but strong

and sustainable economy where no one is left

New cave has been discovered in the territory of the Municipality of Malisheva. The cave is located

in the west of a village named Temeçina, at 638 meters above the sea level. A team from the Kos-

ovo Environmental Protection Agency visited the location and went into the cave to identify the

situation with its natural values. At the entrance of the cave there are two corridors; one corridor

which proceeds to the west and is about 10 meters long, while the main corridor slopes below to a

depth of about 4 meters. This corridor is rich in stalactites and stalagmites, while the floor is rich in

calcium crystals of maroon color. Inside in the cave temperature is very low, and water drips con-

stantly from the crystals. The Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with the Mu-

nicipality of Malisheva has registered this cave among the list of natural monuments with special

nature value and has commenced procedures to take it under its legal protection.

CONFERENCE ON INDUSTRIAL WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR TREPÇA

COMPLEX

Trepça Mining & Metallurgical Complex was

once the backbone of the Kosovo economy, and

mining was Kosovo’s premier industry. The

heavy legacy of toxic industrial wastes, acid ef-

fluents, dust emission poses a serious threat to

the population living nearby. To address these

issues Ministry of Environment and Spatial Plan-

ning, Ministry of Economic Development, Mu-

nicipality of Mitrovica and Trepça Company in

partnership and supported by UNDP organized

a Conference on Industrial Waste Management

for Trepça Complex.

The aim of the conference was to gain higher

prioritization for Trepça’s environmental issues

within Kosovo’s overall political and develop-

ment agenda. The conference offered also

space for sharing the experts’ knowledge on the

environmental and human health impacts from

the industrial wastes, exchanging best practices

for rehabilitation of tailings, linking the environ-

mental mitigation actions with the economic

development, validation of a set of immediate

and long term measures, and reach consensus

on a common action plan among private and

public as well as international development

actors. Participants of the conference acknowl-

edged that Kosovo does not deserve develop-

ment based on short term thinking “grow your

economy first and clean up later” but strong

and sustainable economy.

A strategy to tackle the complex issues sur-

rounding Trepça is, therefore, both necessary

and urgent. Kosovo’s future economic and pub-

lic health would lean heavily on such a strategy -

which must address some of the worst health

and general living conditions in Europe, liberate

human capital, generate jobs and reverse a bit-

ter legacy of social injustice.

At the end of conference stakeholders agreed

on follow up actions, summarizing the recom-

mendations from the conference and develop-

ing and prioritization the list of immediate and

long term interventions.

Following the global launch of the Human De-

velopment Report 2011 in Copenhagen, UNDP

Kosovo organized a roundtable with the par-

ticipation of ministries, UN Agencies in Kosovo,

international and local stakeholders and civil

society representatives on the launch of the

Human Development Report (HDR) in Pristina.

UNDP Kosovo emphasized the relevance of

Human development Report’s message about

sustainability which is not exclusively an envi-

ronmental issue but a question of social jus-

tice. Shpetim Rudi, Deputy Minister of

Environment and Spatial Planning welcomed

the findings of the HDR as relevant to Kosovan

context. Although Kosovo data are not in-

cluded in the in the report, UNDP expert

ranked Kosovo according to available HDI-

Data and argued that global and regional

Cartographers working on preparing a new

edition of the contemporary World Atlas had

to erase 15% of the ice from the globe’s largest

island: Greenland. An area as large as Britain

and Ireland, is now green in the island. As a

direct result of the global warming, so far per-

manent layer of ice has been melted away

during the past 12 years.

The Atlas also has a new island near the shores

of Greenland, called “warm island”, which until

recently was not shown in the maps because

of the ice coverage. Several other environ-

mental changes appear on the world map,

including the detachment of the Wilkins ice-

berg mass in Antarctic and the crumbling of

the frozen bridge connecting it with Charcot

islands.

The new Atlas shows the areas which are most

endangered by the increase of the sea level,

including the Pacific islands and archipelagos,

islands in the Indian Ocean and shores of Af-

rica, India, South-Eastern Asia and Mexico

Bay. This edition also shows that 90% of the in-

crease of the world population, which in October

2011 marked 7 billion, is mainly taking place in

the least developed countries, and in particular

the South-East Asia.

environmental trends jeopardize also Kosovo’s

future. The debate raised a number of concerns

related to sustainability and equity on the

current environmental state in Kosovo, but also

ideas and suggestions on how to best address

them in order to prevent catastrophic scenarios

of the year 2050 captured in the report.

The message of the report states that 1, 7 billion

people who are under poverty line do not only

suffer from the economical poverty but are

under double burden, suffering environmental

degradation directly. The report looks at the new

global development financing and environmental

controls, arguing that these measures are both

essential and feasible and that the challenges of

sustainability and equity must be addressed

together to respond the ultimate global needs.
