The 21st annual Recognition Nights were held May 2 and 4 at Scott Regional Technol-ogy Center.
Scott Tech serves four-
teen school districts by pro-viding fourteen programs of Career and Technical classes.
Fifty-three students
were recognized as Passport recipients. They success-fully maintained a “B” or above grade average during the entire course and were absent no more than 6 days in a given year during their program. Instructor recom-mendation is also required to receive this honor. One hundred and thirty eight students were, in addition, considered “Completers” of their program.
Among a few of the achievements represented were Jessica Terry, an Auto Collision student from Cass-ville, receiving the Break-ing Traditions Spirit Award and Carlee McChesney, a Construction Technology student from Crane, and Jordi Garcia, Early Child-hood Careers student from Monett, both received the Region VIII Breaking Tra-ditions Award. Cassville Cruisers presented two $300 scholarships to Kyler Gray
from Monett and Shelby Taylor from Cassville. Recip-ients of the Child Develop-ment Associate Scholarship were Sabrina Estes from Mt. Vernon and Dominique Christy from Cassville, both enrolled in Early Childhood Education. Ashley Bryand from Monett received the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks Scholarship along with Araseli Avila and Hallie Henderson. Both are Health Occupa-tions students receiving the Cox Monett Hospital Stu-dent of Clinical Excellence. Tyler Groves from Billings signed on with Univer-sity of Northern Ohio as a scholarship recipient. Sierra Keener of Crane was the top Welding student of the year receiving the ACDC Lincoln 225 Welding machine along with a Lincoln Electric gear bag full of welding gear and a $1500 scholarship to Mis-souri Welding Institute.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Depart-ment of Conservation (MDC) shows that turkey hunters checked 39,239 birds dur-ing Missouri’s 2017 regular spring turkey season April 17 through May 7. Top har-vest counties were Franklin with 932 birds checked, Texas with 843, and Callaway with 697. Young turkey hunters harvested 4,100 birds during the 2017 spring youth season, April 8-9, bringing the overall 2017 spring turkey harvest to 43,339.
Barry County’s numbers were 167 tur-keys total with 143 being adult gobblers, 21 being juvenille gobblers, and three being bearded hens.
The 2016 overall spring turkey harvest was 48,374 birds with 4,167 harvested dur-ing the youth weekend and 44,207 during the regular spring season.
“Given that we haven’t had good hatches the past couple years, and the less-than-ideal weather during a considerable portion of this year’s season, the drop in harvest compared to last year was not unexpected,” MDC Turkey Biologist Jason Isabelle said.
He added that the number of birds har-vested this spring wasn’t too far behind
last year’s harvest total going into the sec-ond weekend of spring turkey season, but the heavy rains that blanketed much of the state shortly thereafter caused the harvest to drop rapidly.
Isabelle noted favorable weather over this past weekend helped harvest numbers bounce back a bit.
Get more information on spring tur-key harvest numbers by county at: http://on.mo.gov/1jjz7Ew.
The 2017 spring turkey season included two non-fatal hunting incidents. One involved a shooter who mistook another hunter for a turkey and the other was a self-inflicted shooting injury.
Missouri offers some of the best tur-key hunting in the nation. MDC restora-tion efforts in past decades have taken this popular game bird from almost being wiped out in the state by the 1950s to an estimated sustainable population of more than 300,000 birds today. Missouri turkey hunters spend more than $125 million each year on related travel, food, lodging, and hunting equipment, which helps local busi-nesses and the economy.
MDC releases spring turkey harvest totals
Pushing the lawn mower back and forth across the yard is a springtime neces-sity. At the Missouri De-partment of Transportation, our crews are beginning the mowing season with a main purpose: safety.
During May and June, there is a good chance you will see MoDOT crews out mowing on tractor mowers so motorists have a clear, safe line of sight as they cruise along state highways.
“We ask motorists to pay attention and slow down when approaching mowing crews. Please take the time
to pass carefully and safely especially on rural two-lane roads,” said MoDOT State Maintenance Engineer Becky Allmeroth.
Major and minor routes will be mowed in three cycles starting in mid-May, mid-July and mid-September. Along with the mowing, crews selectively use her-bicides to stunt vegetation growth as well as to control brush and stop the spread of noxious weeds. Wildflowers are an added benefit of not mowing fence-to-fence and careful herbicide usage.
On rural two-lane roads,
crews may use a protective “follow” truck to alert motor-ists they are approaching slow-moving mowers. Driv-ers are advised to use the following tips to safely pass mowers:
• Be alert for trucks and tractors with lights flashing and moving slowly, 2 to 5 mph.
• Slow down and focus on the road ahead of you. Avoid talking and texting on a cell phone or other distractions.
• Be prepared to stop or drive very slowly behind a “follow” truck, especially approaching a hill or curve
on a two-lane road.• Obey the no passing
zone stripes and only pass when you can see far enough past the “follow” truck to avoid meeting oncoming traffic.
Between mowing cycles, report grass and weeds blocking visibility at inter-sections along state roads to MoDOT. Contact MoDOT’s 24/7 Customer Service Cen-ter at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (1-888-275-6636) or fill out an online form at www.modot.org and click on Report A Road Concern.
