PARISH STEWARDSHIP
In the first reading, God promises King David that this house and his kingdom will endure forever. It is through Mary’s “Yes” – “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.” – that the promise finds fulfillment.
The financial stewardship report for the weekends of December 24, 2017 and December 31, 2017 will be reported in the bulletin of January 7, 2018.

Morning Masses 8:30 AM
December 26th - 29th
St. Thomas Aquinas Church Page 3 Saginaw, Michigan
Today is both the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve. This is where life gets complicated because people will decide when they are coming for Mass thinking only of Christmas and forgetting about the 4th Sunday of Advent. Our schedule also changes because of Christmas on Monday. Below is our schedule for Christmas:
Sunday – Christmas – Vigil: 6:00 pm Sunday – Christmas – During the night: 9:00 pm Monday – Christmas Day: 10:00 am
Next weekend is the feast of the Holy Family. It is also New Year’s Eve with Monday, January 1 being the Solemnity of Mary, a holy day of obligation. However, this is one of the three holy days that when they fall on Saturday or Monday, we are dispensed from the obligation of attending Mass. We will have our regular Mass on Monday, January 1 at 8:30 am. That will be the only Mass for the Solemnity of Mary. With the holidays coming up, the parish office will be closed on Friday, December 22 and Monday, December 25. The following week, the office will be closed on Friday, December 29 and Monday, January 1, 2018 but you may want to call ahead to make sure someone is around during that week as some are taking extra time off to be with family. Happy Advent!
Fourth Sunday of Advent
First Reading: 2 Samuel 7;1-5, 8-12, 14 16 Today’s passage refers to the “Ark of God” which was a wooden chest overlayed by gold, where the stone tablets of the 10 Commandments were kept. King David, rich and comfortable in his palace, felt the Ark deserved to be housed in similar splendor. God will tell David that a physical building is not as important as the “house” (that is, the
dynasty) of David. Christians have seen this prophecy fulfilled in Christ, who was born of the House of David.
Second Reading: Romans 16:25-27 Our second Scripture reading is the conclusion of Paul’s long letter to the Romans. It is one sentence, and it very much like a toast offered to God. In effect, Paul is saying that it all comes down to this: We should give thanks to God that salvation is available to all people through faith in Jesus Christ.
Father Rick’s Reflections . . . Today, our readings shift from looking for the coming of Jesus at the end of time to the events surrounding his first coming – the incarnation. We jump to the gospel of Luke. This story is different from that in Matthew where Joseph learns of Mary’s
pregnancy in a dream. In Luke, the angel Gabriel (“God is my strength”) appears to Mary. Gabriel’s greeting is repeated each time we pray the Hail Mary reminding us of this scene. Mary is “greatly troubled” by this greeting. Mary wonders how this can be. It’s something many people wonder about even today. A virgin birth? How was Jesus conceived? The response give to us is the same as that given to Mary – “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, / and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” Nothing is impossible for God. This is an act of God, hence the child will be called “the Son of God.” His kingdom will last forever; he will be the Son of the Most High. Many church fathers spoke of how in that moment, the entire plan of God hung in the balance – would Mary say yes? Human salvation, a free gift from God, depends upon human cooperation. God’s gift is not forced but available to be freely accepted. St. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote, “The angel awaits an answer; it is time for him to return to God who sent him. We too are waiting, O Lady, for your word of compassion.” We hear Mary’s “yes” and all heaven rejoices. Mary’s “yes” is a counter to Genesis 3 where Eve decides to move outside the circle of obedience. The response of Eve ultimately led to human sinfulness and death. Mary’s response to accept God’s design and to cooperate leads to grace and new life.
