ANCIENT CITY POST“YOUR FAMILY’S SOURCE FOR FUN, NEWS, FACTS & EVENTS”

St. Augustine Prepares to Celebrate Past,Recognize Future

Contributed by George Gardner, Former Mayor of St. AugustineAn Amtrak train stop in St. Augustine, a revitalized

Colonial Spanish Quarter, and redesign of the city’soldest street – Aviles Street – are among the aggressiveplans as our nation’s oldest city prepares to celebrateits history and look to its future.

An eight-city team along Florida’s east coast, seek-ing federal funds for regular rail service linkingJacksonville to Miami, met in St. Augustine earlier thismonth in St. Augustine. Officials here see the Amtrakproject as a major element in a multimodal plan tomove visitors to and from the city.

Preparing for those visitors, a museum professional,Dana Ste. Claire – former national museum directorfor Historic Tours of America – heads up the city’sHeritage Tourism Department, while a new city man-ager, former city Chief Operations Officer John Regan, oversees a redesign of Aviles Street, trading parkingspaces along its first block for a wider sidewalk andoutdoor dining.

The city’s Colonial Spanish Quarter plans – to revi-talize sagging visitation and create a stronger link withthe Castillo de San Marcos to interpret civic and mili-tary life in 1740s St. Augustine – face a major hurdle. The city is seeking repeal of state legislation giving theUniversity of Florida management of 34 state-ownedhistoric properties here, including the Quarter.

That plan, designed for funding to repair the proper-ties, is on the ropes due to a lean state budget. The cityhopes to gain an extended 30-year state lease to allowpublic/private partnerships to fund property repairs.

The springboard for those partnerships? St.Augustine’s commemoration period beginning in 2012with the bicentennial of the Constitution Monument inthe Plaza de la Constitución - recognizing the SpanishConstitution of 1812, then the 500th anniversary ofPonce de Leon’s discovery of Florida in 2013 and thecity’s 450th in 2015.

Historic highlights are drawn from The St. AugustineReport, a free weekly e-newsletter prepared by formerMayor George Gardner. To subscribe or review issues ofthe Report, email [email protected].

Meet the Pirates - Jumpin’ Jo JoWe have ourselves a fine crew aboard the Pirate

Ship Black Raven, and we thought it only proper thatyou get to meet them and hear their stories. So we’llbe having a small write-up about each of our pirates

and wenches, randomly drawn, for your amusement. For our 1starticle in a series of 10, we’llintroduce you to one of our barwenches, Jumpin’ Jo Jo.

JoAnna Amrhein, betterknown to her fellow pirates asJumpin’ Jo Jo, was born in 1663in Amsterdam, Holland. Afterher ship was taken by the dreadpirate Fritz Amrhein, she con-verted to piracy to save her life.Fritz took a liking to her whenhe heard her melodious voice

and they were soon partnered. Her new pirate husbandtaught her the finer degrees of swordplay but found hertrue weapon of choice was the cutlery she was sur-rounded with in the galley. The two sailed up anddown the Spanish Main until a change in the windfound Jo Jo boarding a ship in St. Augustine where hershare of the plunder was greater. She now makes herhome aboard the Pirate Ship Black Raven while herhusband roams the seas abroad.

Jury DutyI was on a panel for prospective jury duty. The first

lawyer questioning us began right off as an intimidat-ing showman.

After several questions, he asked, “Do any of youhere today dislike lawyers?” There was an awkwardsilence.

Before the pause became too long, the judgeannounced, “I do.”

Political CorrectnessI think the political correctness is getting ridiculous.

Today I overheard a little boy say he was going to goplay a game of Cattle Management Specialists andNative Americans.

to reinforce Fort Caroline, 40 miles north of St.Augustine in today’s Mayport area.

After founding St. Augustine September 8,Menendez prepared to challenge Ribault. The hurri-cane that struck the area in the second week ofSeptember gave the two commanders choices. Ribaultdecided it would provide cover for his force to attackMenendez’ fleet in his harbor. Menendez decided anoverland assault would be safer than risking his shipsin the storm.

September 20, 1565, Menendez’ troops, after slog-ging through marsh and swamp in torrential rains forfour days, easily overwhelmed the defenseless Frenchfort, while Ribault’s fleet was storm-driven past St.Augustine and destroyed along the coast in theCanaveral area.
