Our annual NJSOSVETS Award breakfast highlights all the great work that the veteran stake holders have done and acknowledges exemplary service to our veteran’s community.

This year we are featuring the event virtually because of COVID-19.

Although we can’t meet in person, please know that we are coming together in our hearts to acknowledge some amazing people.

As you know the proceeds support our unmet needs fund that helps veteran families within our veteran stake holders region. 100 percent of all funds collected will go directly to the needs of veterans in your County. Since the unmet needs fund’s inception we have spent over $72,682.31 and helped 77 veteran families in 9 NJ Counties. Thank you for all the support that makes this possible.

So find a comfortable chair and enjoy the presentation.

Thanks for the support and all the great partnership over the year.

Sharon KnightSharon Knight began her journey with the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 3 in Westfield after relocating from North Carolina to help care for her grandfather, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. They would often visit Post 3, where he was a long-time member to give her grandmother a break and let him visit friends he still recognized. Sharon became a member of the Auxiliary through her grandfather’s service and

membership and has dedicated much of the last decade to volunteer service and working at both the Unit and County levels for our veterans. A self-proclaimed and well-traveled “Air Force brat”, Sharon understands the importance of receiving presents from home, letters from abroad and firmly appreciates a “permanent home.” During her time working with the Post 3 Family – Sharon has worked to increase membership at the unit level, chaired almost all Auxiliary programs – and proved to be an instrumental force at revitalizing the Unit and pushing it to participation in both the County and State levels. Sharon has worked hard to increase Unit operations - the Auxiliary currently sends $100,000 in coupons annually to deployed soldiers and their families, assists with the Post’s “Support Our Troops” packages, and hosts parties for residents at the Lyon’s women’s ward. Sharon has improved fundraising for Unit 3 to supplement additional events allowing for more involvement from Auxiliary members and volunteers both from the entire Post 3 family. At the County level, Sharon began as County Chaplain in 2014, before serving 5 consecutive terms as Union County President while maintaining various chairmanships on the County level, as well as serving as the Public Relations Chair and on several others for the Department. In 2016 she began working as the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services (VAVS) Deputy, and a year later became Representative for the American Legion Auxiliary Department of New Jersey which includes volunteering once a week over the last few years. Sharon has also served as the Department of New Jersey Chaplain and is currently Historian which will lead to her being Department President after serving in the rest of the chairs of the “ladder.”Sharon has a passionate drive to help Veterans and has worked endlessly over the last five years in any way possible. Sharon believes that no contribution is too small – and knows that every little bit will make a difference for the countless Veterans who have served our country. From clothing drives for Veterans in the transitional homeless wards – to assisting with toiletry item needs and Christmas gifts, she ensures that Veterans needs are met, through an active social media presence or even funds from her own pocket. Sharon also volunteered at one of the first women only areas at Stand Down for Veterans with Operation Sisterhood years ago. Sharon regularly attends bingo parties at the Lyons campus and invites residents to cookouts at the Post. She also was driving two Veterans (one recently passed away,) twice a week to their physical therapy and other appointments in her free time. This award is such an honor and means so much to her as it shows that every little bit helps and it’s all about working together.

Detective Ivis Molina Detective Ivis Molina joined the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office on March 6, 2017. Prior to that time, she was an East Windsor Township Police Officer serving as a Patrol Officer and from 2008 to 2016, Detective Molina served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.

In December 2014, Detective Molina earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Saint Peter’s University. In May 2019, she earned a Master of Arts degree from Seton Hall University. Detective Molina is a member of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Narcotics Enforcement Officers Association and is also a member of the Middlesex County Veterans Advisory Council.

Shortly after she joined the prosecutor’s office, the Prosecutor requested that Detective Molina assist with the Veterans Diversion Program (VDP) which was statutorily instituted by the New Jersey Legislature in December 2017. At that time, Detective Molina began training and meeting with members the military community, Rutgers University Behavioral Health, and other prosecutor’s offices in preparation for the inception of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Veterans Diversion Program. Based upon her contacts, Detective Molina has arranged for not only services for veterans who are defendants in criminal matters in Middlesex County but for any veterans who calls or contact the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Detective Molina actively recruits mentors for the VDP across New Jersey. Due to her extensive knowledge and involvement in the VDP, the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMAVA) has requested that Detective Molina teach the Veterans Diversion Program and train potential mentors at their state-wide VDP trainings. NJSOSVETS Women Veterans Stake Holder Sub Committee On November 11th, 2017, an amazing panel of veteran women engaged in a round table with Senator Cory Booker, Congressman Pascrell and the NJ VA Director Vincent Imitti to discuss their experiences at the VA in NJ and to implore change take place immediately. Without censor, they were there to tell their stories and have them heard, uninterrupted, by explanation or rationalization by the men they were directing their conversation toward. These women of the SOS VETS Women Veteran Stakeholders Sub-Committee, came because they wanted and required change. There was no skirting of issues. From walking into the East Orange VA medical hospital and being “gawked at as if they were walking into a strip club”, to not having gender specific specialists on staff, to not “feeling safe” from prying eyes, derogatory comments by staff and other male veterans, or being re-victimized as MST survivors not having a women’s only space to receive treatment. They spoke about continually being called “Mister” if they were there with their husband or father. That experiencing an ER visit was harrowing due to co-ed curtain separated “stalls” for care. Ultimately they were expressing that they felt INVISIBLE at the NJ VA and in general, within their communities and no one seemed to care. The outcome seemed positive. Mr. Imitti agreed to host monthly meetings with the core leaders of the sub-committee, Lucy Del Guadio, Gina Pollut, Catherine Gutierrez, Yahaira Padilla, and Verna Martin. With support and attendance of Emma Corrado from Senator Bookers’ office as well. The changes started small. Some redesign of seating in the lobby area and a new Emergency Department allocating 2 private rooms for women veteran patients. But the momentum slowed and we wanted to rejuvenate the effort that WE ARE NOT INVISIBLE!!We decided we wanted NJ to recognize women veterans on a larger scale, and implored our legislators to assist us by making June 12th – the anniversary of The Women’s Armed Services Integration Act (1948) allowing women to enlist into military service on a permanent basis – NJ Women Veterans Appreciation Day. With massive support from the NJ SOS VETS Stakeholders leadership, Assembly Women Cleopatra Tucker (Chairwomen of NJ Military and Veterans Affairs Committee), NJ State Senator Kristen Corrado, Senator Booker and other incredible supporters, on June 12th, 2019, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver signed into NJ law making June 12th NJ Women Veterans Appreciation Day!! We were finally NOT INVISIBLE!!It may seem like a small gesture to some but to many if not most of us, it was a culmination of struggle and validation of our service. The Sub-Committee continues to meet quarterly, and we still have work to do. #1 is getting a standalone women’s only clinic in NJ.

Red White & Que SmokehouseMore than 25 years ago, Dan could have guessed endlessly on where his experiences in the United States Marine Corps would take him. Its safe to say none, of those guesses would be owning a classic Southern BBQ joint in New Jersey! A while back, while reliving his Marine days with his wife Katie over a plate of slow smoked brisket, Dan came up with the dream. The dream to own a little place and serve the kind of food he loves to make and feed to all of his friends. For Red White & Que, BBQ is more

than just delicious food. It represents a rebellious spirit while still holding fast to old school American traditions. It’s the food we eat when we come together with friends and neighbors in celebration. A Celebration of the American Dream fully realized.

Since Opening in 2016 Red White & Que Smokehouse has been featured on Food Network’s Guy’s Big Project and has been named NJ’s Best BBQ by thrillist.com, NJ Monthly Magazine and listed in the Top BBQ in NJ by NJ.com, Food & Wine Magazine and many other local and national publications. In 2019 Dan and Red White & Que recipes were published in critically acclaimed BBQ cookbook: SMOKED. Red White & Que Smokehouse has also been spotted on Fox & Friends as part of their annual Memorial Day block party in NYC.

Dan and Katie have always made it a part of Red White & Que Smokehouse’s core values to serve those that served us by creating the customer funded “Buy A Vet A Meal” program. “Buy A Vet A Meal” is a pay it forward program in which Red White & Que customers make a small donation to be added to a gift card. The gift card is then kept in the restaurant to be used as a donation to simply buy a meal for a veteran. Since the beginning of this program Red White & Que has partnered with local veterans organizations to feed thousands of veterans throughout New Jersey from offering free catering for veteran focused events to throwing their own Pig Roast parties at the Kearny, VFW where Dan and his team cook a 200lb. pig with all the fixings and invite veterans and their families to eat for free. Red White & Que also gives 20% off to veterans and10% off to first responders every day.

Dan and Katie always hope to spread happiness and positivity wherever they go. They are committed to making a positive impact on their community and giving back to those that have given them the ability to live their American Dream. Since 2018 Red White & Que Smokehouse has also partnered with Help 2 Feed, a local operation that accepts food donations from restaurants, to feed about 100 homeless and needy people in Newark, NJ every Tuesday.

Sometimes, making a real difference can be as simple as a plate of good BBQ!

The SOSVETS Unmet Needs Fund

Catholic Family and Community Services (CFCS) under Catholic Charities for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson and the SOSVETS Stakeholder Groups have created a Veterans Unmet Needs Fund to offer financial support to veterans who do not fit into the usual funding sources. The fund provides a onetime payment per veteran household of up to $1,500.

The money for this fund is being collected through private donations and fund raisers such as this awards breakfast. CFCS has agreed not to take any administrative costs, so that 100 percent of what is collected goes directly to the veterans in need.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported the fund and to request your future patronage.

By acting locally, as well as, together we can make improve the lives of our veterans in need within our community.

Thank you!

Sincerely

The SOSVETS Unmet Needs Fund

Thank you to all the SoS Vets Stakeholders for their love, support, and advocacy for myself and all veterans fortunate enough to come their way.

And of course, my friend, David J. Pearson!

This team of individuals is committed to assisting the Unmet Needs of veterans participating with the Stakeholders groups in 11 of 21 counties in the state of NJ!

Their courage, guidance and support has been invaluable in the course of my tenure at Catholic Charities - Veterans Services, in my personal and professional journey, and have become family. The team is the MOST reliable resource of knowledge in the veteran community!

Collectively they are the humblest group of advocates BAR NONE for the most vulnerable New Jersey Veterans! None of them want recognition for their efforts, but they all deserve it and all of us can take away a lesson in mentorship from them on "how to get things done" in and for the veteran community!

It is also my great pleasure to congratulate all the award winners!!!!

It means something to have been chosen for these awards, because it means you DID something to catch the attention of your community and the SoS Vets Stakeholders, so thank you for all you have done and continue to do for our veterans.

To the Stakeholders core leadership, my friends .... nothing holds more true than my beloved Marine motto:

GORY A. BOOKER NEW JERSEY

UNITED STATES SENATE WASHINGTON, D. 0. 20510

March 30, 2019

Catholic Family and Community Services Supportive Services for Veterans and Families Catholic Charities Diocese of Paterson 24 Degrasse Street Paterson, New Jersey 07055

Dear Friends,

It is a pleasure to extend my warmest greetings and congratulations as you gather for your 4th annual Stakeholders Awards Breakfast. I am especially delighted to recognize and congratulate today's honorees, representing eight counties and various organizations. Today's awards are a well-deserved acknowledgement of your impressive records of service and your commitment to the ideals of excellence and duty.

As your United States Senator, I am dedicated to ensuring that our veterans receive the recognition and benefits they deserve from an eternally grateful nation. Since taking office in 2013, I have had the immense privilege of working with the Catholic Family and Community Services' SOSVETS Veterans Stakeholders group to support and honor our veterans and their families. Through this partnership, we have been able to work together to bring a Veterans Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic to Sussex County, fight to expand coverage for veterans exposed to toxic substances during military service, and increase resources for New Jersey's female veterans.

I am proud to count the SOSVETS Veterans Stakeholders group as a partner and an ally in our mission to care for our former service members. Through their advocacy, Catholic Family and Community Services has helped support thousands of veterans throughout New Jersey. Without the selfless service of our veterans and the sacrifices of their families, we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms that make the United States of America so extraordinary. While we can never repay the immeasurable debt that we owe our service members and veterans, we must always endeavor to honor their service and sacrifice.

I am so grateful to Catholic Charities Diocese of Paterson for its continued commitment to honoring those who have given so much for our nation. Once again, congratulations. Please accept my best wishes for a memorable event.

Sincerely,

Cory A. Booker United States Senator
