Matthew M. Marsit, conductorAn active conductor and clarinetist, Matthew M. Marsit hasled ensembles and performed as a solo, chamber, and orchestralmusician throughout the United States. Currently on the artisticstaff of the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts at DartmouthCollege as Director of Bands and as the Artist-in-Residencein Winds at Williams College, Matthew has previously heldconducting positions with Boston’s Charles River WindEnsemble, Ithaca College, Cornell University, Drexel University, the Chestnut Hill Orchestra, the Bucks County Youth Ensembles, the Performing Arts Institute of Wyoming Seminary and theEastern US Music Camp.

A champion for new music and advancing the repertoire of original works for wind ensemble,Matthew has commissioned and led premiere performances from dozens of the world’s leadingliving composers, including Christopher Marshall, Daniel Basford and Christopher Theofanidis. Also an advocate for the use of music as a vehicle for service, Matthew has led ensembles onservice missions, collecting instruments for donation to schools, performing charity benefitconcerts and offering workshops to benefit struggling arts programs.

A native of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Matthew moved first to Philadelphia to complete his studiesin music at Temple University, where he studied clarinet with Anthony Gigliotti and Ronald Reubenand conducting with Luis Biava and Arthur Chodoroff. Additionally, Matthew has studied conduct-ing with some of the world’s most prominent instructors including Mark Davis Scatterday of theEastman School of the Music, Timothy Reynish of the Royal Northern College of Music inManchester, UK and Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy.Matthew also holds a graduate degree in Orchestral Conducting from The Boston Conservatory.

Steven Dennis Bodner (1975-2011) was Music Director of the SymphonicWinds and Opus Zero Band at Williams College, where he also taughtclassical saxophone, coached chamber music, and taught classes in musicfundamentals and aural skills acquisition. He earned a B.A. in philosophyand a B.M. in saxophone performance from Miami (OH) University in 1997,and a M.M. in wind ensemble conducting with academic honors and distinc-tion in performance from New England Conservatory in 1999. At thetime of his passing, he was a Ph.D. candidate in Music Education at the

University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he conducted the Youth Wind Ensemble for fouryears and was Interim Director of Bands, 2002-2003. He had taught at the Hartwick College (2002)and South Shore Conservatory (2003) Summer Music Festivals, as well as in the New EnglandConservatory Preparatory School (1999-2004). He was a true force of nature, with a heart as big asthe universe, and his death makes no sense at all. The hole it has left in our lives, individually andcollectively, is huge, and the loss to our department immeasurable.
