A message from Father Jacob
Dear friends,
UPDATE - maybe that’s a word we’re getting tired of hearing. . . . It’s on News Breaks; T.V. presentations; in radio discussions; so many updates - updates on the Corona Virus; updates on World statistics; updates on the Australian situation, and so on.
Of course it is important for us to be up-to-date with information on these things. But in our particular situation, there are other factors in our lives that need attention. How would an update on my health look? An update on my attitude (positive/negative)? An update on my prayer-life? With no opportunity for Mass and the Sacraments, we have still come through Holy Week, the Easter Triduum, and the Easter Season. I am hearing such inspiring stories of how people managed to mark these Solemn events with prayer at home. Many are using the live-streamed Masses as noted in the Bulletin.
As a Pastor I have to say I have also been so moved to see some parishioners actually physically coming to our Churches, and praying through the locked glass doors! What a great lesson in simple Faith for all of us.
As we enter the new month, May - the month of our Mother Mary, everyone from the decision-makers down, is cautiously looking towards a new stage. Archbishop Anthony Fisher wrote to the NSW Premier this week asking that as restrictions begin to be lifted, churches may be permitted to be opened for private prayer and confessions. “It’s likely that such a ‘soft opening’ will happen before we can resume public Masses”
I can assure you our Archbishop Commensoli is in constant contact with we his clergy. We even have ‘Online Prayer time’ with him! He is well aware of the situation, and is working towards acceptable strategies when restrictions do begin to be relaxed.
Let us pray about this. Let us pray for each other. Let us not forget those who have been less fortunate then ourselves in this pandemic. So many are grieving or suffering other effects of the crisis. Let’s come out of this stronger, more united, and closer to our Loving Shepherd, Jesus.
With my warmest regards and Blessings, Jacob

DID YOU KNOW…?
Pope St. John Paul II, the good shepherd. The most beautiful and meaningful comment on the life and the legacy of our late Holy Father, Pope St. John Paul II, was made by the famous televangelist, Billy Graham. In a TV in-terview he said: “He lived like his Master, the Good Shepherd, and he died like his Master, the Good Shep-herd.” In today’s Gospel, Jesus claims that he is the Good Shepherd and explains what he does for his sheep.
This is Good Shepherd Sunday. Today, the Church calls us to reflect on the meaning of God's call and to pray for vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate and the consecrated life, reminding us that the entire Christian community shares the responsibility for fostering vocations. Both the Old and New Testaments use the image of a Shepherd and His flock to describe the unique relation of God to Israel and Christ to Christians.
The first reading, Acts 2: 14, 36-41: This text gives a summary of the whole Gospel message: Who Jesus is, how he saves us, and how we should respond. Peter tells the people: “You crucified your God and Messiah, but he has risen from death and offers you forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spir-it.” The conclusion of the sermon sums up the whole kerygma in a single Christological formula: "God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus Whom you crucified." The titles "Lord" and "Christ” have great signifi-cance. "Lord" was a title reserved for God alone. When early Christians realized that God had been made flesh in the person of Jesus, they dared to give him this Divine title. "Christ" is the Greek form of the Hebrew word "Messiah," meaning the "anointed one,” or "King." He is the long-awaited successor to King David, and the ful-fillment of all the hopes based on David’s glorious reign.
The second reading: 1 Peter 2: 20-25: The "shepherd" reference in the last verse of this reading from Peter’s epistle links it to the day's Gospel. “He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd, the guardian of your souls” (vv. 24-25). Peter then makes three contrasts in this part of his epistle: a) between what Jesus suffered and his surprising responses: "...insulted, he returned no insult;" "when he suffered, he did not threaten"(v. 23); b) between Jesus and us: HE bore OUR sins; by HIS wounds WE are healed (v. 24); c) between our former lost condition and our graced present state.

The Fourth Sunday of Easter—Year A 3 May 2020
Entrance Antiphon Cf. Ps 32:5-6
The merciful love of the Lord fills the earth;
by the word of the Lord the heavens were made, alleluia.
First Reading Acts 2:14. 36-41
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles
God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ.
On the day of Pentecost Peter stood up with the Eleven and
addressed the crowd with a loud voice: ‘The whole House
of Israel can be certain that God has made this Jesus whom
you crucified both Lord and Christ.’
Hearing this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and
the apostles, ‘What must we do, brothers?’ ‘You must repent,’
Peter answered ‘and every one of you must be baptised in
the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and
you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise that
was made is for you and your children, and for all those who
are far away, for all those whom the Lord our God will call to
himself.’ He spoke to them for a long time using many
arguments, and he urged them, ‘Save yourselves from this
perverse generation.’ They were convinced by his arguments,
and they accepted what he said and were baptised. That very
day about three thousand were added to their number.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Ps 22:1-6. R. v.1
(R.) The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Or (R.) Alleluia.
1. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. (R.)
2. He guides me along the right path; he is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. (R.)
3. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing. (R.)
4. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell for ever and ever. (R.)
Second Reading 1 Pt 2:20-25
A reading from the first letter of St Peter
You had gone astray but now you have come back to
the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
The merit, in the sight of God, is in bearing punishment
patiently when you are punished after doing your duty.
This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ
suffered for you and left an example for you to follow the way
he took. He had not done anything wrong, and there had
been no perjury in his mouth. He was insulted and did not
retaliate with insults; when he was tortured he made no
threats but he put his trust in the righteous judge. He was
bearing our faults in his own body on the cross, so that we
might die to our faults and live for holiness; through his
wounds you have been healed. You had gone astray like
sheep but now you have come back to the shepherd and
guardian of your souls.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation Jn 10:14
Alleluia, alleluia!
I am the good shepherd, says the Lord;
I know my sheep, and mine know me.
Alleluia!
Gospel Jn 10:1-10
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
I am the gate of the sheepfold.
Jesus said: ‘I tell you most solemnly, anyone who does not
enter the sheepfold through the gate, but gets in some other
way is a thief and a brigand. The one who enters through the
gate is the shepherd of the flock; the gatekeeper lets him in,
the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep
and leads them out. When he has brought out his flock, he
goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow because they
know his voice. They never follow a stranger but run away
from him: they do not recognise the voice of strangers.’ Jesus
told them this parable but they failed to understand what he
meant by telling it to them. So Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I
tell you most solemnly, I am the gate of the sheepfold. All
others who have come are thieves and brigands; but the
sheep took no notice of them. I am the gate. Anyone who
enters through me will be safe: he will go freely in and out
and be sure of finding pasture. The thief comes only to steal
and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life
and have it to the full.’
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ.
Communion Antiphon
The Good Shepherd has risen, who laid down his life for his
sheep and willingly died for his flock, alleluia.
