Children's Liturgy of the Word One of the many ministries that we offer here at Holy Trinity is Children's Liturgy of the Word. During the 8:30 and 10:30 Sunday morning liturgies we invite children that are 5 years old though 4th grade to take some time together to discuss the Gospel story for that week. It's a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn more about the gospel and what Jesus wants for each of us. It's also a chance for our kids to meet new people their own age. If your child has never been a part of Children's Liturgy of the Word before, consider sending them the next time the invitation is extended. We would love to see them there! If you would like more information about Children's Liturgy of the Word, please email John Mertes, Director of Faith Formation at [email protected], or via telephone at (515)-255-3162 extension 224.

Respect Life Corner

“Among the vulnerable for whom the church wishes to care with particular love

and concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives

and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. …Precisely

because this involves the internal consistency of our message about the value of the human person, the church cannot be expected to change her position on this question… It is not ‘progressive’ to try to resolve problems by eliminating a human life…”

Question for Children: Jesus tells us he is the Good Shepherd, but how do you experience God guiding and protecting you? Question for Youth: How do you feel about Jesus' being your shepherd? What does it mean to you that he lays down his life for you? Question for Adults: What qualities of God does the image of the Good Shepherd suggest? How do you experience God in this way?

S P I R I T U A L I T Y O F T H E R E A D I N G S

Handles In Sunday’s Gospel Jesus makes a wonderful comparison, of the good shepherd to the mere hired hand. The good shepherd cares about the sheep. The hired one is mainly interested in getting paid. When wolves come, he simply runs away.

To discern the difference, take a poetic example.* First, imagine that there are “handles” on what you possess. Everything—honors, assets, etc.—everything has a “handle” that someone could grab in order to take it away from you. Looks, home, car, reputation, career, money saved up for the children’s education, respect from others, pleasure, youth, you name it. What do you own that you could not lose? You grab your own handles and hold on tight.

But an ominous power comes into play at this point. The forces of greed tell our hearts that everything in the whole world is there just to be grabbed for oneself and kept. “Greed is a virtue,” these forces say, in fact it is the only virtue. The mess of the world situation in this second decade of the 21st century does seem to prove that. It is the hired hand’s way of life.

But there is an alternate way. It has to do with love, the kind of love that the good shepherd shows us. Its motto is this:

The real value in life is to receive and give, not to grab and possess.

All that you have and all that you are is a gift from the good God. If you open your hands, so to speak, you will let God pour into them whatever you really need! And keeping them open lets you can easily release your gifts and let them pass on to others in need.

Two ways of life: “Grab and Keep” on one side. “Receive and Let Go” on the other. Hired Hand versus Good Shepherd.

There comes an epic battle between these two ways of life. It is waged on the cross. Evil seizes and tears away from Jesus everything with “handles” on it—friends, followers, career, respect, relation to God, comfort, slaking of thirst, breath, life itself.

Evil wins. It takes everything.

Yet there is a fatal flaw in the grab-and-keep philosophy. It thinks that nothing at all exists without a handle on it.

So we ask, what about love? Love lets go, receives humbly, gives humbly. There is nothing to grab about real love, nothing by way of a handle. Since the devil only sees grabbing and selfishness, to him love must be just another form of self-interest!

So the he burrows down to the innermost sanctum of Jesus’ soul on the cross, greedy to seize the ultimate prize itself, the power of God. Ravenous for it, salivating, unable to hold back, he throws open the tabernacle doors of Jesus’ soul! And he finds that the sacred space is empty, completely empty.

Oh, something is present there, but it has no handles. The quiet stillness—receiving gratefully and lightly letting go—these are surely there, but the devil cannot see them. So he goes on his way, confident that everything is now his.

But it isn't. Love wins because it has already given everything away. This is why the Good Shepherd can lay down his life for the sheep. This is why the Father loves him. And us if we follow.

John Foley, S. J. of the Center for Liturgy

James, Apostle and Martyr, died c. 62

This Saint James is called “the Less” or “the Younger” to distinguish him from the other apostle named James. He has also been called “James the Just” in recognition of the respect in which he was held by the Christians of his time.

A number of things can be inferred from the references to James in the gospels, together with tradition and what has been passed on in the writing of others. (Many Church historians believe that there was a third James who was prominent in the Church in first century Jerusalem and some of what follows might be attributed to this other James.) James was the son of Alphaeus. St. Paul tells us that Jesus made a special appearance to James prior to the Ascension. The other apostles were still suspicious of Paul when, three years after his conversion, he visited Jerusalem. But James, along with Peter, gave Paul a cordial welcome.

James was recognized by Peter as one whose pre-eminence was acknowledged by the Christians of Jerusalem. Indeed we know that James (or, perhaps, the third James) was the bishop of Jerusalem. At the Council of Jerusalem, the bishop appears to have taken a major role. It was at this first church council that the decision was made that Gentiles who accepted Christian teaching need not follow all of the Jewish laws. James suggested that they "should not trouble those Gentiles who are turning to God...." (Acts 15:19). After consulting with Peter, it was James who announced the conclusions to the assembly.

Early writers tell us that James was stoned to death by the scribes and Pharisees who were

afraid that, because of his influence with the people, he would bring all of Jerusalem to Christ. As he was being stoned, James knelt down and prayed for his tormentors. One of the priests tried to stop the stoning, shouting to the others that James was praying on their behalf. But another priest then took a heavy stick and struck James on the head, killing him. The year of his death is commonly accepted to be 62 A.D.

St. James is the patron of druggists, hat makers, and fullers (people who make cloth “full” by pleating or gathering). He shares a Feast with another apostle, St. Philip, on May 3.

James' message today: Like many other martyrs and like Jesus, James prayed for his persecutors. It is not easy loving those with whom we are in strong disagreement, but that is what Jesus asks us to do.

Have you forgiven your enemies or is your animosity still allowing them to rule your life? Ask Jesus to help you to learn to forgive those who have hurt you.

Holy Trinity Parish’s Annual Diocesan Appeal goal is $104,902.00. We have received pledges and gifts of $63,200.00. Payments of $48,747.55 have been

received, leaving a balance due of $56,154.45 to meet our assessment due to the Diocese. To date, 193 families have made an ADA pledge or given a one-time gift. If you have not yet made a pledge to the ADA, please prayerfully consider what you are able to give to help us reach our goal. Thank you for your generosity.
